After hearing onlythe first line of thissong, country legendGeorge Jonesjumped at the chanceto record it.Songwriter DonRollins wrote thecatchy tune aftervisiting a racetrackand used lyrics aboutthoroughbred racingas a metaphor for theemotional ending of aromance. The melodymimics the franticpace of gallopinghorses. The songdashed to No. 3 onthe country charts in1964 and made acomeback in 1989,when the bandSawyer Brownrecorded it.
