Prescribed burning is planned in theLundbom Lake area, south of Merrittstarting today until May 16. the con-trolled burn, conducted by Wildfire MgtBranch personnel and Ministry ofForests, Lands & Natural Resource Op-erations staff from the Cascades NaturalResource District, will occur in severalphases during this period in order tomeet ecosystem restoration objectives.
the Lundbom Lake burn area coversan estimated 78 hectares, located about13 kms south of Merritt and 4 kms eastof Hwy 97C.
Historically, grasslands and openforests in the Nicola Valley have been re-newed through frequent, low-intensityground fires. Such fires limit tree en-croachment, rejuvenate understory plants(trees & shrubs that grow beneath the for-est canopy, but above ground-coverplants) and maintain open grassland andopen forests containing large trees.
the reintroduction of managed, low-intensity ground fires to these grasslandsand open forests is intended to restoreand maintain plant communities that arenative to these areas. these managedfires also reduce the amount of com-bustible material, leading to a decreasedrisk of wildfires.
Prescribed burns are part of an ongoingecosystem restoration program adminis-tered by the Province of BC through theNicola-Similkameen Innovative ForestrySociety, in collaboration with local ranch-ers, forest licensees, First Nation commu-nities and other organizations.
