in Paediatric Cardiac Care

Celebrates 3rd Annual Day with children

economically challenged families

Master Vedanth, 9-year-old Paediatric CardiologySurvivor from Pune celebrating children’s day at ApolloHospitals

By Chandrashekhar Hendve

NAVI MUMBAI: OnChildren’s Day, ApolloHospitals Navi Mum-bai created awarenessand education about ad-vancements in paediat-ric cardiac care. Con-genital Heart Disease(CHD) is a leadingcause of stillbirth andinfant death, account-ing for around 5% ofneonatal deaths.

On the3rd foundation day ofApollo Hospitals, NaviMumbai, organised anengaging fun eventwith 100 children andtheir families. Many ofthese childrenhailing from eco-nomically chal-lenged familieshad undergonecardiac treatmentfree of costthrough the ini-tiative of ApolloS p e c i a l i t yHealthy Abhiyan(ASHA), at ApolloHospitals in NaviMumbai,

Mr SantoshMarathe, COO &Unit Head alsosaid, “Since its incep-tion 3 yearsago, Hospitals have re-defined healthcare inMaharashtra. We areproud to have success-fully made healthcareaccessible and afford-able for patients in thisregion. With state-of-the-art technology, Hos-pitals offers patientstreatment options andoutcomes that are atpar with the best avail-able in the world. Atpresent we havetouched 1.5 lakh livesand conducted 90 livertransplants. Withskilled clinicians whoare trained at the topcentres in the worldHospitals is consideredto be one of the best pae-diatric cardiology hospi-tals in India. It is our

endeavour to focus onpatient care, createawareness about pre-ventive care and use

novel technology totreat paediatric cardiacproblems.”

Commenting on thisoccasion Dr. BhushanChavan, PaediatricCardiologist, Hospitalssaid, “Paediatric cardi-ac care is a significanttopic which needs at-tention. Children withCHD have a higher riskof cardiac and non-car-diac problems. Thoughprevention may not al-ways be possible, it canbe successfully treatedthrough early interven-tions. Congenital HeartDisease (CHD), a com-mon defect or anomalyof the heart that existsfrom birth, occurs inaround 1 out of 100 livebirths. We decided todedicate this Children’sDay and Foundation

Day to spread aware-ness about paediatriccardiac care, thus en-couraging to take a pre-

ventive approach fortreatment”

Dr. Neville Solomon,Consultant, PaediatricCardiac Surgery, Hos-pitals, said, “Out of1000 children, 8 chil-dren have congenitalheart disease. On anaverage of 3 to 4 needto undergo a surgery ortheir survival becomesa challenge, but not allchildren require sur-gery, simple conditionscan be managed by in-terventional procedures(Non-surgical proce-dures) and complex con-ditions can be cured byopen heart surgery withexcellent results, if theteam is good. Many ofthese children can leada normal life like anyother children withgood quality of life.”

Tackling the menace of E wasteTechnology today is advancing at an exponential rate. Almost

every other day there is a new discovery and the consumers arebombarded with newer and fresher alternatives. We live in a con-sumer driven society that is constantly buying, upgrading, and re-placing current technology and discarding the old ones. Electron-ic waste or e-waste is the term given to describe any electronicproduct, or product containing electrical components, that hasreached the end of its usable life cycle. However, as these dis-carded products are electronics, they contain many chemicals suchas lead, arsenic, chromium and dioxins which if not disposed off ina proper and scientific manner, may leach into the environment, causing environmental degradation and a threat to humans andanimals in the vicinity.

The two major types of e-waste recycling methods that are usedthroughout the world are formal and informal e-waste recycling.Formal recycling primarily occurs in more developed countriesdue to the increase in the costs necessary to use this method.Informal recycling facilities are primarily used in developing na-tions.

Ideally, all e-waste should be recycled in formal recycling facil-ities. However, because the formal e-waste facilities are costly toconstruct and operate, especially in less developed countries, in-formal recycling sites are prevalent. The informal e-waste sectorconsists of sites that extract the valuable parts of the electronicsusing crude recycling and disposal methods usually without anykind of safety equipment such as goggles or gloves or the assis-tance of technology. Some of the valuable components are removedprimitively and the remaining parts of the e-waste are typicallyburned, buried or discharged into waterways for convenient dis-posal. The process emits toxic chemicals from the e-waste intothe surrounding environment and is one of the main reasons forenvironment degradation. Many of the chemicals found in elec-tronic components can easily leach out into local water sources, find their way in food, and can easily be blown away by the wind andtransported into the air. Mercury, a heavy metal found in thermo-stats, fluorescent bulbs, and other household items bioaccumu-lates in wildlife, especially fish when mercury is deposited in thelakes and streams.

Realising the harmful effect of e waste and its impending dan-ger to humanity, International E Waste Day is being celebratedglobally with an aim to spread awareness amongst the masses. However, by merely celebrating a day will not solve this graveproblem. We all need to take few steps at individual levels to en-sure that there is minimal e waste generation from our end. Man-ufacturers too should also design electronics that are safer andmore durable, repairable and recyclable. This would mean usingless toxic materials. In addition to recycling, it is also important torepair and reuse the devices that we have. Additionally, compa-nies that make products should be made responsible for the man-agement and disposal of their products at the end of their lives. Inother words, manufacturers should provide consumers with freeand convenient e-waste recycling procedure wherein the consum-ers can go to the collection centres set up by the company for freeremoval, handling and proper disposal of electronic goods.

The consumers on their part can also help in curbing e wastegeneration by resisting to buy a new device until it is absolutelyessential. It would be ideal if the old product could be repaired butif it can’t be fixed, it should be resold or recycled responsibly. However, before recycling any broken parts should be stored inseparate containers so that hazardous chemicals don’t leak. ManyNGOs and the civic body have set up red bins where the citizenscan dispose off their e wastes. We should make maximum use ofthis facility. A small step from our end can help in bringing a bigchange.

ma is boundless. Shya-ma is living in a properroom made of concrete. She can’t sleep withoutfan so her room has ceil-ing fan and on top of itshe hears FM Radio. There is a bed wherethe owner sleeps atnight because Shyamacannot sleep alone. Onone side Shyama is tiedon the other side hercalf Bihari is tied andall the three sleeppeacefully.

When he comesfrom the shop Shayamacalls to have the toffeeshe brings home for her.The most importantthing which fascinatedme was Shyama’s fond-ness for FM songs. Iwas discussing with myfriends about this andthey said that it is afact that cows givemore milk if they listento music.

Scientists informthat the milk produc-

tion of cows goes upwhen the animals lis-ten to music. Farmershave known this factalso. But deciding ex-actly what songs to playis difficult. Many saythat slower and moresoothing rhythms arelikely to work best. Atleast that’s suggestedin a study by two psy-chologists at the Uni-versity of Leicester. Inthat study it was shownthat cows that listenedto song like “EverybodyHurts” by REM and Si-mon & Garfunkel’s“Bridge Over TroubledWater” produced threepercent more milkthan a control group.Cows that listenedabrasive tunes like rapand techno songsshowed no increase inmilk production.

It is being observedthat most dairy farmsfeature country musicor Latin music. Scien-tists found that when acow is stressed, the re-lease of oxytocin is

slowed — the hormoneis central to the milk-ing process. The inneratmosphere of an indus-trial dairy facility canbe hectic and loud andit’s a potentially stress-ful situation for a cow.So it is understood thatmusic might distractthe cows and help themstay calm.

These researchescome from the devel-oped nations but in In-dia a single person whois not even a farmer, knows the sensibilitiesof a cow- it is amazing.

Now the second ex-perience is of KartikPurnima or Dev Diwa-li or Guru Nanak Jay-anti or TripurariPoornima, which is oneof the most auspiciousfestivals of the Hindusand falls on the 15thday of the bright fort-night of the Kartikmonth. People throngedin large number to takea dip in Ganges or Gan-ga- The Holy River. Thefervour was amazing. I

know that the deity ofprimary importance onthis day is Lord Vish-nu, whose one form isLord Krishna, butsome people also wor-ship Lord Shiva on thisgreat day. We all knowthat The Guru NanakJayanti also falls onthis day and it is cele-brated with great fer-vour by the Sikhs.

This festival alsoholds importance forthe Jain community. There is a story be-lieved by the devoteesthat Lord Shiva killedthe demon Tripura onthe Kartik Purnimaday, and devotees whoworship him on thisday achieve the fouraims of human life –Dharma, Arth, Kamaand Moksha. There isa saying that all thedeities come down toearth on this day andbless their devotees. In most vi l lages, towns and cities largefairs and melas arealso organized on this

day. It is believed thatthose who make dona-tions on this dayachieve benefits equalto 100 AshvamedhYagyas.

Talking about Kar-tik Poornima remindsone strongly aboutGuru Nanak Dev ji.All of us know thatSikhism originatedwith Guru Nanak fivecenturies ago. Nanakcame from a Hindufamily but he grew upsurrounded by Mus-lim neighbours. Froman early age heshowed a deep spiritu-al character as hebroke away from hisfamily’s traditionsand belief systems, re-fusing to participatein empty rituals .Nanak married andentered business, buthe was less interest-ed in material thingsand remained focusedon God and medita-tion. Eventually Nan-ak became a wander-ing minstrel and he

composed poetry inpraise of one God, andset it to music. Hewas against the castesystem and taughtequality of all human-ity. There is one sto-ry where it is saidthat one morning,Nanak went to medi-tate and bathe besidethe Kali Bein, orBlack River, withMardana. Nanakwalked into the riverand disappeared be-neath the water andhe did not show up forwork. Everyone as-sumed that he haddrowned except forhis sister Nanaki whobelieved that he willcome out. Three dayspassed and then, as-tounding everyone,Nanak emerged fromthe river alive. Theamazed town’s peopleagreed that Nanak isan enlightened beingand began to call him“Guru.” So with deeprespect I bow to GuruNanak dev ji .

Rising mosquito menace- A cause for concern

Navi Mumbai isconsidered number onein cleanliness and weare trying hard to main-tain the same status inthe coming years aswell. But of late, NaviMumbai is facing mos-quito menace and thecases of Malaria andDengue are rising inthe satellite city. Theincrease in mosquito isfelt after the monsoonseason and the citizensof Navi Mumbai strug-gle to keep them awayduring evening.

Both Dengue andMalaria have beenspreading in an epi-demic form. Pre-venting ourselvesfrom these malarialparasites is of ut-most importance.People suffer moredue to late detectionor self-medication.Now, a new fear ofdrug-resistant ma-laria is on its way toenter India so a needof awareness is neces-sary. It is time to workon basics and preventstagnant water so thatbreeding of mosquitomay not take place atthis time of the year. Both children and thesenior citizens suffermost due to mosquitomenace.

There are five typesof parasites, whichcauses malaria in hu-mans, of which Plasmo-dium Falciparum is themost common and re-sponsible for mostdeaths worldwide.Three species of humanmalaria parasites arefound in India of whichVivax is the most pre-dominant one. NMMChas taken a right ap-proach in eradicatingthe disease from thegrass root level by do-ing door to door surveyof water stagnation in-side flats and other sur-roundings in housing

societies. Even NMMCpasted big posters tocreate an awarenessamong the citizens ofthe satellite city. Let usco-operate with NMMCand keep the city neatand clean. After all, ‘Health is Wealth’ andwe can do so by main-taining proper cleanli-ness at home and avoidwater stagnation in oursurroundings to makesure that mosquitoesdid not get a space tobreed in our compound.

Malaria would havebeen a simpler problemif not for its habit of re-curring again andagain. It is this prob-lem which also keepsthe disease alive in acommunity and makesits control quite diffi-cult. It is time to takea broader outlook at

what malaria and itseffects on person affect-ed in Navi Mumbai.Malaria parasites aremembers of the genusPlasmodium caused byP. falciparum, P. ma-lariae, P. Ovale, P.Vivax and P. Knowlesi. P. Falciparum is themost common cause ofthe infection and is re-sponsible for about 80%of all Malaria cases.Female mosquitoes areprimary hosts andtransmission vectors ofmalaria. Mosquitoesfirst ingest the parasiteby feeding on an infect-ed human. The infect-ed mosquitoes then car-ry the parasites in theirsalivary glands and arethen ready to infect anew human host.

Female Mosquitoesfeed on blood while malemosquitoes feed onplant nectar thus, males do not transmitthe disease.

The secretaries ofthe multi-storied build-ings in the satellite cityshould see to it thatproper remedial mea-sures are taken to con-trol menace of mosqui-toes and that will defi-nitely help in curbingMalaria cases in NaviMumbai. Proper stepsshould be initiated toconduct fumigation onalternate days initiallyand then have it oncein a week or so. Stag-nant water in the Soci-ety should not be per-mitted and the stormwater in the drainageshould not be allowed tostagnate to permit lavato form and becomemosquitoes thereafter. Malaria menace can betotally avoided if thebuilding societies applyregular dose of repel-

lents in the drainagesystem to kill them inthe bud.

Some of the symp-toms of malaria includefever, shivering, jointpain, vomiting, ane-mia, retinal damageand convulsions. Theclassic symptom of ma-laria is cyclical occur-rence of sudden cold-ness followed by rigor, then fever and seatinglasting for a period offour to six hours, occur-ring every two days inP.Vivax and P. Ovaleinfections, while everythree days P. Malariae.P. Falciparum canhave recurrent feverevery 36 hours or lesspronounced and almostcontinuous fever. Pre-vention is better thancure in case of malar-ia.

We hate to use themosquito nets becauseit failed to give us free-dom from free move-

ment. When we hatenet, we hate mosqui-toes as well. Moscreenmosquito preventingnets comes very handyas you can keep thesliding winds open butat the same time youcover it with a thindurable net which al-low air to flow but atthe same time stop mos-quito menace. The netshave frames and henceyou can roll it as it ismade of strong alumi-num profiles. Special-ly developed springloaded mechanismhelps to smoothly rollthe screen up and downwith touch of your handas per your require-ment. It is a zero main-tenance arrangementto prevent mosquitoentry and you can cleanthe screen every time

you roll it up. Fur-ther it provides ahigher percentage ofair and light trans-ference. In fact froma distance of 8 to 10ft. it is barely visibleto the naked eye.

Moscreen is high-ly flexible and can bewashed like any or-dinary cloth. Sinceit is made of fibreglass coated withprotective vinyl and

thermally welded ateach mesh and it is non-combustible and non-corrosive as well.Again, Moscreen can beinstalled with a varietyof option on existingwindows to suit yourbudget and get rid of alltypes of insects enteringthrough your win-dows. Preventive mea-sures such as use ofmosquito repellents, drinking clean waterand living in clean sur-rounding are advis-able.

Preventing malariais much better thancuring after getting af-fected by the disease, as there is a risk of re-currence and death is apossibility. Let us notplay with our life withcarefree attitude andNMMC should play apositive role in prevent-ing spreading of malar-ia and dengue.
