The year is drawing to a close and as I send you this message I am preparing to go to the Fall meet in Buellton and enjoy the company, weather and cars at Mendenhall's museum; as those that were there the last time know it was a dyna-mite event and we can only expect it to be better with Bruce Fosdick being the ringmaster. I am hoping that we can get some new mem-bers on board the SCC board this next year and give the club some new perspective on events and man-agement issues; the present board knows that there are some of you that are willing to step forward and become involved just as Don Hooper, Ed Hoffman, Jamie Fiffles, Ralph Haun, Rich Norbrothen and the other old timers have done. There has been some talk about changing the time and place of the monthly board meeting to at-tract new people and if the location and timing is an issue please let one of the board members know; many of us remember when we were meeting at

Danchuck's on Saturday and the comradary and free food made the meetings worth coming to. The upcoming events are: 10/12 - 13/2013 Fall meet with CCC; 10/27/2013 the free, free, free, free picnic at Yorba Linda park (please let us know if you are com-ing so we can prepare); 11/2/2013 the Filmore train ride and I have had a very good response from the members and expect it to be very well attended so please do not miss out; 12/8/2013 the annual Holiday Brunch at the 94th Aero Squadron in Van Nuys and those that have been there before urged the board to do it again - so make your reservations now; 2014 spring meet as well as social tours are in the works and as soon as we formalize the plans Ed V. will send emails to all and they will, again, be well attended. It is the hope of your board that more of you can, and will, participate in the events and the board functions.

Cover Car! - Mike Vietro’s 1963 Gary Pickens “7 11” American Heritage Award Winner

The Story of #7 11 By Corvette Mike Harry Mann Chevrolet / Gary Pickens 1963 Corvette “711” Vin# 30837S102899 Racer. Also, Stared in the Elvis Presley and Ann Margaret Movie “Viva Las Vegas”. Summer of 1962 was filled with anticipation for the all new “1963 Corvette” featured in numer-ous publications, Hot Rod, Motor Trend and countless others. General Motors and Chevrolet were targeting, the coming of age, post war baby boomers and seized the opportunity. Per-formance, performance, performance was the name of the game, the new Corvette’s sleek styling and redesigned fuel injection was an immediate success. However, the clouds were beginning to darken with “rumors” of Ford’s introduction of its new nimble sports car, the Cobra. The ultimate showdown came at River-side on October 13, 1962, the inaugural race between the two, Corvette and Cobra. All the premiere Southern California drivers participat-ed along with a host of other top teams and drivers, most notably Alan Green Chevrolet from Seattle. In the crowd was another compet-itive driver employed by Harry Mann Chevrolet, Gary Pickens. After the Corvette’s triumphant win at Riverside Gary approached Harry Mann Chevrolet intending to purchase a new “Special Performance Package (Z-06)” optioned Corvette coupe. Unfortunately, the option wasn’t availa-ble to the general public, due to a number of engineering issues. The “Special Performance Package (Z-06)” finally became available after December 14, 1962 without the 36.5 tank and Quick Take Off Wheels. Being the competitor Gary was, he had no intention of waiting. Utiliz-ing Harry Mann’s resources, purchased a red fuel injected 63 Coupe, modifying the car adding, roll bar, competition brakes (Z-06), removing as much weight as possible and 711 was born. Gary success-fully campaigned 711 at many of California’s tracks, Dodger Stadium, Del Mar, Riverside, Laguna Seca, Santa Barbara, Pomona and others. One of its most distinguished accomplishments was in Elvis’s 1964 movie “Viva Las Vegas” with Ann Margaret. In addi-tion to being in the movie, it was one of Gary’s big-gest paydays. In late ‘63 Gary decided to sell 711 with its new 64 competition engine, the original was destroyed during one of the many races and sold. In the 1963 October 18-25 issue of “Motor Racing” Pickens advertised his ’63 as:

“Lightweight Competition Sting Ray Coupe. Race ready, factory Z06 options, 8 wheels and tires, 2 rear ends, ’64 racing engine, productified, financing and trades accepted, call Gary Pickens, Harry Mann Chevrolet. AX4-6191” This issue of “Motor Racing” is contained in the huge binder of photos; many by Peter Luongo, race standings and before restoration shots of the car as found some 40 years after Gary Pickens ran that exact ad. The car was purchased from that ad and raced with Z06 brakes by a local California couple, says Peter Luongo who knew Pickens well and was a photogra-pher during his racing career. It was in 1972 that another couple bought the car in the Hollywood Hills and used as a daily driver for a number of years be-fore it was retired to the garage to collect dust and fond memories. It was painted black at that time. 40 years later, with the same ownership it was discovered purely by accident thanks to Mike Scott, Corvette racer and historian, simply by attending a Long Beach swap meet while he set up his booth selling old vintage Cor-vette parts. All the racing mods were still in place like; the roll bar, the Z06 backing plates, the original factory

drilled holes in the inner fender to support the air cleaner, stiffer brackets to hold in place the rear cross member, and the two brackets welded on the front frame to aid in the event of a clutch ex-ploding. Call it an antiqued scatter shield, says Mike Scott. Being in Southern California all of its life, the frame and suspension were like new without any rust. In 2012-13 “711” underwent a complete and sympathetic "As Raced" restoration by Nabers Bros. in Houston Texas and Corvette Mike in Anaheim, CA. using as many original parts as possible, including much of the interior, like the original seat covers ( showing wear), cen-ter console, instruments, glove box door, door panels and steering wheel all with a patina that only decades of use produce. A true testament to the type of care this old vintage racer experienced in its 50 years in Southern California. Gary Nabers of Na-bers Brothers Restoration claims it was the nicest race car he ever restored. That’s a huge statement coming for a guy that has restored many of the great ones from the era. It not only runs and sounds great, it also looks beautiful having just taken 2nd Place in the Race Car division of the prestigious La Jolla Concours D’Elegance in La Jolla, CA in April 2013. Then it traveled to scenic Lake Tahoe for the NCRS Regional meet to be signed off for the American Heritage Award. A feat not easy to come by in the world of certifying rare and original Corvette Race Cars. From there it most recently completed the inaugural Basilone Rallye through 26 miles of Camp Pendleton’s USMC training facility. A first time ever in the history of Car Rallye’s. Lastly, on to the show field of the Dana Point Councours June 23rd to finish its West Coast Campaign. Af-ter being shown in Dana Point, Corvette Mike began the process of preparing 7 11 to be judged for the highly coveted N.C.R.S. Herit-age Award. The preparation involved getting the car to “as raced back then” condition as possible. This involved installation of the third taillight, modification of the exhaust system, removal of the turn signals, some graphics changes and various other items. But all the effort was rewarded this past August at the N.C.R.S. National Convention in Hampton, VA. when 7 11 did indeed receive the American Heritage Award!

A longtime NCRS member and SCC board member, he participated in NCRS events throughout the country and even in Italy. He always had a smile on his face and was the first to volunteer for any assignment. He and Diana received the NCRS Presidents Award and the SCC Distinguished Service Award. He will be fondly remembered by his many friends.

First Wrecked C7? Well that didn’t take too long. It’s been less than one month since the first Corvette Stingrays started being delivered to customers when this picture of a crashed Velocity Yellow 2014 Corvette Stingray shows up this afternoon on reddit. It’s not like this is the first time we’ve seen a 7th generation Corvette Stingray involved in an acci-dent. During the development phase and run-up to production, the Stingray ended up in a ditch in Ari-zona and took a hit by a Lincoln Towncar into the passenger side door. Both Corvettes were repairable and based on the condition that we can see, we’re hoping this one is too. The C7 in the picture appears to be Z51-equipped Stingray based on the wheels and spoiler. The dam-age looks to be concentrated in the front of the car and the drivers airbag looks to be deployed. Hope-fully the driver is okay and can one day face himself in the mirror after knowing he was the first customer to wreck a new Corvette Stingray.
