    At the age of 17, Jonas Gutman was sent tothe first of five consecutive concentrationcamps. Prisoners were divided into 2 lines;

Jonas switched lines so a man could be withhis brother. Jonas lived, while the other linewas sent to the gas chamber.

When Jonas’ health declined, daughterFran called Comfort Keepers for relief. Franfelt assured a competent caregiver would be

sent, someone her father liked and she couldtrust. Fran could finally relax knowing her dadwas in good hands. Jonas said his caregiver “Lisa is an angel.”

She knew that dignity and compassion wereimportant and treated Jonas with kindnessand respect. Lisa learned about Judaism as

Jonas was always teaching about his faith. “Itis because of Jonas’ faith that he survived andhad the strength and love to be a greatcaregiver for 24 years to mom Lukta,(holocaust survivor)” Fran said.

Athletes devoted to outdoor work-outs do not abandon their routineswhen winter rears its chilly head. Whileit can be difficult to embrace the greatoutdoors when temperatures hoveraround the freezing point, maintainingyour motivation at such times bodeswell for your fitness goals the rest of the year.

Staying warm is a top priority forathletes who exercise outdoors duringthe winter months. While there’s noguarantee winter winds won’t test yourwillpower, there are some ways to staywarm when working out in colder cli-mates.

    • Wear appropriate headgear. Foryears, many people subscribed to theconventional wisdom that suggestedpeople lose 40 to 45 percent of theirbody heat through their heads. But in2008, researchers at Indiana Universitydebunked that myth, suggesting that if humans lost that much heat throughtheir heads, then they would be just ascold when going outside without a haton as they would be if they left homewithout wearing any pants. But wearingheadgear when exercising outdoors isstill a good idea, as the head is moresensitive to changes in temperaturethan many other areas of the body. Awool hat you can pull down over your

ears can protect them from getting toocold. Athletes may also want to consid-er ski masks or other facial covers thatcan protect their faces when winterwinds are howling.

    • Layer correctly. Layering has longbeen a reliable way to beat the coldwhen temperatures are at their lowest. But layering must be done correctly tobe effective. When choosing your work-out gear, choose an inner layer that willmove moisture away from your skin.Cotton retains moisture, and that meansyour sweat will cling to your body andmake you feel cold. Once you find ashirt made with moisture-wicking mate-

rial to wear against your skin, look fora second layer that also wicks moistureso you can more effectively control yourbody temperature. Your outer layershould be capable of handling the ele-ments, so look for something that iswaterproof and wind-resistant.

    • Don’t forget footwear. Feet caneasily succumb to cold temperatureswhen exercising outdoors, but you canemploy the same strategy with yoursocks that you do with your layers. When choosing workout socks, avoidcotton socks that don’t wick moistureaway from your feet. Acrylic can bemore effective at wicking moistureaway from your feet than cotton.

    • Know yourweather reports. Whileit’s admirable to stayon course with youroutdoor workouts inthe winter, don’t allowyour devotion to over-take your commonsense. Check the fore-cast before beginningan outdoor exercise, paying particularattention to the windchil. According to theMayo Clinic, frostbitecan occur when skin is

exposed to wind chilllevels below minus 18F for 30 minutes. If need be, shorten out-door workout routinesand find ways to exer-cise indoors whenwind chills get danger-ously low.

Exercising outdoorsin winter can be exhil-arating, but athletesmust prioritize stayingwarm and safe for theduration of their work-outs.

The New Year is a wonderful time tospring back into exercise, whether youenjoy cycling, running, hiking, oranother outside activity. But if you’dlike access to indoor facilities for swim-ming, weight lifting, cardio machines,or an exercise class, it may be time for

you to consider a new gym member-ship.

The Better Business Bureau ServingWisconsin received nearly 2,500inquiries on health clubs and gyms in2015. Choosing a gym is a lot like shop-ping for an apartment: there are anumber of features to consider andyou’ll likely find something that meetsmost of your goals, but not all.

The BBB has a few tips to help youwhen you’re choosing a fitness club orgym membership:

Check out new member offers. Many gyms offer introductory specials, discounts, or free months. Be sure youread the fine print, and calculate howmuch you’re on the hook for paying —

monthly or annually — after the spe-cial rate ends.

Read the renewal policy. Somegym contracts renew automatically, orrequire a written notice to cancel 30 to60 days before your contract expires.Make sure you know how and whenyou’ll need to approve or cancel a newcontract and add the date to your cal-endar after you sign up.

Know if there are early termina-tion fees. Many fitness membershipsrequire extra fees if you want to breakyour contract before your renewal date.Be sure to read these before choosing agym, so there aren’t any unpleasantsurprises.

Take your time to consider youroptions. Don’t be pressured to choose amembership quickly. A reputable fit-ness club or gym will give you time tothoroughly view the facility, read yourcontract, and answer any questions youmight have.

Check gym and health club reportsand customer reviews for free on BBB'swebsite. The Accredited BusinessDirectory is a good starting point infinding a gym in your area..

Martin Luther King, Jr. played a piv-otal role in race relations in the UnitedStates for nearly a decade. He helpedsecure the end of legal segregation of African-American citizens, created theCivil Rights Act of 1964 and served as asource of inspiration for black individu-als across the globe.

Dr. King did not begin his life as acrusader or public figure. He had much

more modest beginnings in ruralAtlanta. Born Michael King, Jr., he wasthe middle child of Michael King, Sr.and Alberta Williams King. MichaelKing, Sr. served as pastor of EbenezerBaptist Church upon the death of hisfather-in-law, who was the church'sprior pastor. At this point, the elderking decided to change his name toMartin Luther to honor the famedProtestant religious leader. His son soondecided to adopt the name as well.

A religious family, the Kings tried toshield their children from the realitiesof racism that were alive and well in thecountry. They believed racism and seg-regation to be an affront to God's will, and Martin, Sr. discouraged separation

of class and taught these lessons to hischildren. Those lessons resonated withMartin, Jr.

Dr. King attended Booker T.Washington High School and was soadvanced he was able to skip both the9th and 11th grades. He went on to col-lege at the age of 15, graduating fromMorehouse College in 1948 with adegree in sociology. In his junior year of

college, King enrolled in a Bible classthat sparked a renewed enthusiasm forthe ministry. He later enrolled in theliberal Crozer Theological Seminary inChester, Pennsylvania, where hereceived a Bachelor's of Divinity. Laterhe attended Boston University andearned a Ph.D. at the age of 25. It wasduring his time in Boston that he methis future wife, Coretta Scott. While he

was completing his dissertation work,Dr. King became the pastor for theDexter Avenue Baptist Church of Montgomery, Alabama.

Martin Luther King, Jr. becamedirectly involved in the civil rightsmovement after the head of the localNAACP chapter in Montgomery met withhim on the night that Rosa Parks wasarrested for failure to give up her busseat to a white passenger. Dr. Kinghelped institute the Montgomery BusBoycott. During this time, African-Americans refused to ride the public bussystem in Montgomery. The boycottlasted 382 days. During that time, Dr.King's home was bombed due to hisinvolvement in the boycott, and he was

arrested for conspiracy. His work paidoff on December 21, 1956, when theSupreme Court ruled that racial segre-gation on public transportation wasillegal.

Dr. King promoted nonviolentprotests against unfairness to theAfrican-American community, urgingcivil disobedience and peacefulprotests, tenets that formed the basis

for the Southern Christian LeadershipConference, or SCLC, which he led. Heparticipated in numerous nonviolentprotests and was arrested several times.During one stint in jail, he penned hisfamous, "Letter from a BirminghamJail."

Dr. King established a relationshipwith fellow African-American civilrights activist Bayard Rustin, who

shared similar interests, including theteachings of Gandhi. Rustin would serveas King's mentor and also was the mainorganizer of the March on Washingtonthat took place on August 28, 1963.Approximately 250,000 demonstratorswere involved in the march, and it wasthe largest demonstration in thenation's capital up to that time. In frontof the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. King issuedhis famed "I Have a Dream" speech. Helater met with President John F.Kennedy to appeal for greater rights forAfrican-Americans and called for an endof segregation.

As a result of his civil rights efforts,Dr. King was awarded the Nobel PeacePrize on December 10, 1964, at the age

of 35. He was the youngest person everto receive the honor. He donated all of the prize money to his racial equalityeffort.

Through the late 1960s, Dr. Kingexpanded his Civil Rights Movement toother cities. But he was often met withcriticism, especially when he appealedto white middle-class citizens. Manymilitant black organizations considered

King's methods too weak and tive. His support was faltering King grew weary of marches, jprotests. However, in April of labor strike in Memphis drewattention, and he gave a speecthe sanitation labor dispute, would prove to be prophetic. Tday, on April 4, Dr. King was hsniper's bullet while standing

Life and influence of Dr. King

Few people in American historyhave had as strong an impact on theUnited States as Martin Luther King,Jr., the civil rights leader who wasslain in 1968 at the age of 39. Throughhis message of nonviolence and civil

disobedience as a means to advancingcivil rights for all people, Kingchanged the lives of millions. Thosechanges are still felt today, nearly half a century after his death.

Though his death was tragic, King'slife remains something to celebrate, afact recognized by the federal govern-ment in 1983, when President RonaldReagan signed a bill creating a federalholiday to honor King. Since 2000, all50 states have observed the holiday, which has been observed on the thirdMonday of January each year since1992. For many, Martin Luther King,Jr. Day is a time to reflect on King'slife and advance his message. Childrendo not have school on Martin LutherKing, Jr. Day, making the holiday anideal time for parents to teach theirkids about King and his lasting legacy. The following are a few unique waysadults and children alike can celebratethe life of Martin Luther King, Jr.

    • Give back to your community. Acommunity leader who made countlesssacrifices for both his own communityand the nationwide community of those denied their civil rights, King isperhaps best honored by those whomake efforts to give back to their com-munities. Parents can take theiryoungsters to volunteer and help theless fortunate, be it working at a soupkitchen or an assisted living facility. Many communities host outreachevents on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day,

and adults and children can takeadvantage of such events to honorKing's legacy.

    • Read about the Civil RightsMovement with your children. Thanksto advancements in technology, men,

women and children now have awealth of information at their finger-tips. This makes it easy for parents todiscuss the Civil Rights Movement, andKing's role in that movement, withtheir children. The older kids are, themore detailed parents can be whenexplaining the struggles King encoun-tered. Even adults without children arelikely to be enlightened by studyingthe Civil Rights Movement and King'slife in closer detail.

    • Listen to or read King's speeches.Renowned for his abilities as an orator,King gave numerous speechesthroughout his life, many of which areequally, if not more, moving todaythan they were during his lifetime. While King's "I Have a Dream" speechdelivered in 1963 on the steps of theLincoln Memorial is widely known,King gave many more speechesthroughout his lifetime. Such speechesare an invaluable resource for thoseinterested in learning about the life of King and his beliefs.

The life of Martin Luther King, Jr.is something to celebrate, and the hol-iday in his name is a great time toreflect on and study his life whilemaking efforts to improve your com-munity.
