GOOD TIMING The best time to do something worthwhile

is between yesterday and tomorrow. —Anonymous

Ash Wednesday Mass Schedule March 1, 2017

7:00 and 8:00 a.m. and 6:30 pm in the Mission Church

8:30 a.m., 12:00, 5:30, 7:30 p.m. in St. Francis Chapel

The collection March 1 will be for the Mission Poor

Fund to assist those who come to us in need.

LENTEN SEASON

Lent is a season of simple living, particularly through

three practices: prayer, penance, and almsgiving. While

these practices are part of an ongoing life of the Catholic

Christian, they hold a special place for us during Lent.

FRIDAYS OF LENT—New this year on Fridays will be Stations of

the Cross* at 12 noon in the Mission Church. Then after the 5:30 p.m.

Mass, Stations of the Cross will be said again and a Knights’ Fish

Dinner will follow in the California Room.

SATURDAYS OF LENT—Every Saturday of Lent (except Holy

Saturday) there will be an additional Confession time at 10 a.m. in the

Mission Church.

ABSTINENCE—is a penitential practice consisting of refraining

from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics

who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and

the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.

FASTING—In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed by

all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years (inclusive) on Ash

Wednesday and Good Friday. On days of fasting, one full meal is

allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be

taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal

another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids

are allowed. If a person is unable to observe the above regulations

due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice

other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

The Mission Knights of Columbus will host a series of

Friday Fish dinners during Lent in the California Room.

New this year will be an Early Bird Special at 4 p.m.

Regular Meal Service will begin at 6:30 p.m., following

the Stations of the Cross, which follows the 5:30 p.m.

Mass in the Mission Church. All are welcome. Adults

$10 adults, $5 youth (under 11 yrs). Watch for the flyer

or visit our Mission web site for more details..

Fridays of Lent Fish Dinners

*Stations of the Cross—This year on the Fridays

of Lent the Stations of the Cross will be held at Noon

and again at 6 p.m. in the Mission Church. We will need

three volunteers for the Noon Stations to carry the Cross

and two candle sticks. To volunteer either call the parish

office (619-283-7319) or sign up at the center table of

the Mission. Altar Servers will help at the 6 p.m.

Stations.

DON’T BE ANXIOUS

People have, it seems, a natural penchant for

misplaced emphasis on unimportant things. They can

easily get caught up with what they’re having for

dinner or what they will wear.

Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus

on what is really important. What I shall wear is an

irrelevant question when I am facing surgery or

chemotherapy. What’s for dinner is immaterial to

those living through grief or unemployment.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry.

He doesn’t say, “Don’t eat. Don’t cook. Don’t buy

clothes.” He says, “Don’t worry.” Jesus asks us not to

relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our

anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus

reminds us that “Your heavenly Father knows” all that

you need (Matthew 6:32). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
