Looking back over the past 18 years, what stands out to us is that Mogappair Mail’s ability to survive and thrive is a success story collectively authored by the people who worked for us and many others who stood by us through-out our journey.

As we enter the 19th year, I take pride to thank Lord Almighty for all his blessings. Moreover we express our profound gratitude to the advertis-ers, well wishers and readers for their continuous patronage all these years.

This weekly newspaper that had a humble start in 2001 and grown in stature would not have been possible without the unstinted support of many like minded people.

Our first edition was printed at SIGA (Salesian Institute of Graphic Arts) in Kilpauk. When we moved over to web printing, it was at VS

Printograph Pvt Ltd, owned by Mr Cyril Sagayaraj before we finally zeroed in to a well equipped printing press closer to our office. Lavy T Moncy (page designer), K V Vasudevan and K Srinivasa Raghavan (journalists) my former colleagues of the New Indian Express were of great help to us.

Mogappair Mail’s present genuine circulation is 42,000 copies. Distributed in and around Mogappair, Anna Nagar West Extn, Golden George Nagar, Nolambur, Part of Ayanambakkam and Maduravoyal to name a

few, stand testimony to it. Moreover we are proud to say that we are the pioneers in this part of the city.

Since its inception, we have filed many human interest stories, brought to light many unsung heroes, hidden talent and achievements mostly by school children. This has been well acknowledged by our readers.

One thing is clear that Mogappair Mail can achieve much more and whatever we do, it will be a success collectively shared by many.

A short-lived Railway experiment

A short-lived experiment by the Southern Railway in introducing a stoppage for the Sap-thagiri Express (Chennai-Tirupathi) and Jolar-pettai Express (Chennai-Yelagiri) trains at the Ambattur Railway Station recently has evoked mixed response from people in the western suburb. The Southern Railway had on January 28 decided to stop the two Express trains at the Ambattur Railway Station so that people of the neighbourhood could board the long distance trains. Until then the people of Ambattur local-ity had access to only the suburban EMU trains unlike their counterparts in Avadi, who at least got an occasional long distance train to stop at the Avadi Railway Station.

However, the experiment lasted just one day. Yes you read that right. Just one day. The very next day on January 29, the Southern Railway withdrew its pilot project and announced that the two long distance trains would not stop at Ambattur Railway Station any longer.

What caused this? Well, opposition from a section of train commuters.

According to Pugazh, a regular train com-muter from Ambattur, the long distance trains had 17 coaches and were too long to be stationed at the platform in the suburban station. “The length of the platform in Ambattur Railway Station is only about 300 metres. Ideally, for long distance trains to be stopped the platform should be at least 700 metres in length. This being the case, the safety of commuters became a cause for concern as they had to climb on to the long distance train with great difficulty from beyond the platform level. That is why some of us op-posed the idea. We are happy that the Southern Railway heard our pleas and decided to with-draw the stoppage,” he said. However, some commuters felt that they should not have with-drawn the service so early.
