Peddling past the four road junction at Panneer Nagar in

Mogappair, where the Sri Selva Vinayagar - Sri Seera-di Sai Narathar temple is located, one is unlikely to miss out on a small cycle shop, dumped with old cycle tyres, handle bars and other cycle parts. This ram-shackle of a shop has been functioning at the same place for nearly three de-cades. And the chief me-chanic who has been re-pairing cycles for three generations is none other than Jayagopal.

A short statured man, now 65 years of age has been the most wanted man especially for the school going children. Those days it was the manual air pump

and children used to wait for their turn to pump up the cycle tubes. Though shops l ike this have switched over to compres-sors, Jayagopal still sticks on to the traditional man-ual hand air pump. The best thing about him is that he charges very reasonably and if someone wishes to pay more, he returns the money with gratitude.

All that he has for him-self is a cycle and he pedals all the way from Thiru-verkadu where he resides. The size of the shop is 10x8 and with all his equipments and unwanted stuff, there is no place for a person to sit.” When I started off I just paid Rs 350 as rent but things have changed now,” he says. When enquired about his marital status, Jayagopal said “ I was mar-

ried long back but became a divorcee soon. I worked in the Bharat Petroleum canteen for a while but had to give up the job due to unforeseen circumstances. The only other thing I knew was to repair cycles and I settled for it”.

“It was a friend who helped me to set up this shop with an initial amount of Rs 2000 but it was un-fortunate that the same person cheated me to a tune of Rs 35,000,” he said. The shop does not have a nameboard nor does Jayagopal have a mobile phone. He is not interested in having one in the near future too. “I’m a loner, I fend for myself. I’m not interested in saving and what I earn is more than enough to keep me going,” he signed off with a smile.

In a rare verdict in a crime that happened in the Anna Nagar

neighbourhood, a man has been sentenced to be hanged until death by a trial court in Chennai, which found him guilty of murdering his wife. The verdict was pronounced this past week.

According to the pros-ecution, the murder hap-pened in an apartment in

Anna Nagar during the day time on December 17, 2012. The accused in the case is Kannan, who worked as a teaching fac-ulty in the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) Department of a self-financing college, on the outskirts of Chennai’s western suburbs.

Kannan, now aged 49 years, had married Mo-hanambal of Salem dis-trict, and lived in an apart-ment in Anna Nagar. The

prosecution, represented by V Muralikrishnan, said he had a troubled married life and he and his wife would enter into quarrels frequently over salary re-lated issues.

A day before the crime, Kannan and Mohanambal had gone shopping to T Nagar, the commercial hub of Chennai. Upon returning home they got into a quarrel. The follow-ing day, another quarrel erupted between the cou-

ple and in the heat of the moment Kannan had smashed Mohanambal’s head with a grinding stone. Thereafter he also slit her throat with a knife.

The Thirumangalam Police took up investiga-tion of the case. According to the prosecution when the police personnel inter-rogated Kannan, he con-fessed that he had killed his wife provoked by her behaviour. Acting on the basis of his confession

statement, the police ar-rested the accused hus-band.

The trial in the case came up before the Fourth Additional Sessions Court in Chennai. During the trial, the defence counsel representing Kannan had denied the allegations lev-elled against his client.

The trial dragged on after the charge sheet was filed and on Wednesday last the Fourth Additional Sessions Judge ARV Ravi

held the accused guilty on the charge of murder. The judge rejected the argu-ments advanced by the defence counsel and con-cluded that the prosecu-tion had proved the guilt of the accused beyond all reasonable doubts.

Holding that this was a case that would fall within the “rarest of rare” cate-gory warranting capital punishment, the judge awarded death penalty to Kannan.

Junked vehicles remain nearold Nolambur Police Station

It has been many months since the Nol-ambur Police Station

moved to a new premises from its old building on Kavimani Salai in Mogap-pair. However, tell-tale signs of the police station’s functioning remains near the old premises as several vehicles, some of them presumably seized for vio-lations or lack of docu-mentation, still remain junked on the roadside.

The junked vehicles have occupied the side of the road near the old police station building for ages, according to local resi-dents. Mogappair Mail too had highlighted the issue in its columns in the past.

From a run-down am-bulance to mini vans one can find an assortment of

vehicles almost dumped in close proximity of each other at the site. They have been left exposed to the vagaries of the nature as well as to anti social ele-ments for months on. In fact all that remains of a water tanker lorry is the central body part of the vehicle with no signs of its engine, tyres and other body parts.

“Most of these vehicles were presumably seized by the Nolambur Police for want of proper documen-tation such as insurance and Registration Certifi-cate or for some major traffic violation. As is the won’t such seized vehicles are parked near the police station – like anywhere else in the city of Chennai – and left there until such time their owners are able to show the documents,”

explained Senthilkumar, an advocate in Mogappair. “If these vehicles were involved in road accidents, then usually they remain in the custody of the po-lice till such time the court completes hearing or or-ders their release,” he added.

Now with the police station having been shifted to another location on the other end of the same road, these vehicles have become targets of anti so-cial elements, according to some residents. “I have spotted some people near the vehicles trying to re-move some parts and take them away. There are oth-ers who just damage the vehicles without rhyme or reason. Also these vehicles provide cover to those who want to gulp down a peg of liquor in daylight,” alleged

Chennai based carrom players Aswin Soundararajan and P Mohanakrishnan attempted a world record by playing carrom for 56 hours and one minute. The Rotary Club of Madras Ma-rina will organise a workshop to impart training in air-conditioning and refrigeration services at Voca-tional Training Centre (VTC) in R.A. Puram. The course will be a one-year programme approved by the Direc-torate of Employment and Training, the Department of Labour and Employment, Government of Tam-il Nadu, with a guaranteed employ-ment on course completion and for students from economically disad-vantaged back ground, according to a release.

It will be offered free of cost with a set of uniform and industrial safety shoes. The centre was started in 2016-2017 and has trained 82 students so far. This year, they plan to admit 48 students for air-condi-tioning and refrigeration course which will be an intensive course for nine months and a subsequent three-month internship with AC dealers.

The plan is to start a new course in “Basic electrical & electronics and appliance repairs” shortly. The cen-tre is planning to provide CAD/CAM training course and Tally course which are in good demand in the market.

In what has been a short lived joy for a section of residents in Mogappair East, a green fencing erect-ed at the corner of Ori Salai – Electricity Board Road (EB Road) junction to prevent dumping of garbage, has failed to yield the desired result beyond a particular time.

In late September last year, Mogappair Mail in its columns had reported how the residents were happy that the green fencing had eliminated the menace of random dumping of gar-bage at the corner site.

However, in less than six months the residents much to their consternation have found that now some peo-ple, who lack basics of civic sense, have begun dumping garbage just out-side the green fenced area.

“This particular site was an unauthorised garbage dumping spot in this part of the locality. After many months of battling with the garbage menace, we were happy when this green fence was installed. In the initial months of its instal-lation, people stopped dis-carding waste here much to our relief. However, now our joy is short lived as the garbage dumping has start-ed near the fenced area,” said a resident of an apart-ment complex adjacent to the dumping spot.

the roadside is being used to park both personal and commercial vehicles. “Since the vehicles are

parked here for most part of the day, people simply dump garbage without anybody being able to no-

tice them. They dump both biodegradable waste as well as non-biodegradable waste here with impunity,” lamented a resident of Ori Salai.

Residents pointed out that earlier a large garbage bin had been placed at the spot for collection of wastes. However the gar-bage bin was later re-moved. They suggested that the garbage bin could be brought back and placed on the street so that

people could discard waste there.

The local residents also said that the Greater Chennai Corporation must undertake frequent

awareness campaigns to make people understand the need for disposing of garbage only at designated authorised spots and not randomly on the street.
