Our Compliments
The police will soon start enumerating the de-tails of tenants from the landlords and houseown-ers to aid the police in tracking suspects and pre-vent criminal activities.
In such an effort, an order has already been promulgated within the jurisdiction of Greater Chennai instructing the landlords/house owners/lessors to furnish particu-lars of their tenants in the prescribed format to the nearby police station with-in 15 days from the time of letting/subletting/renting out any accommodation to any person. This order is already in force. While the landlords are free to choose
their tenants, they should furnish the details of the tenants to the local police
station in the prescribed format. In this regard, the city police sought the coop-eration of the landlords and tenants to strengthen the hands of the police in crime prevention and en-suring the safety and secu-rity of the public.
Information on tenants made mandatory

Tenderness in Steel, Ice in a Volcano
Janani Maheshwari Vyas
The nation celebrated the 141st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
on the last day of October, 2016. It is time to recollect the attri-butes that made Patel into a Sardar.
Patel was a smart student and certainly defiant to injustice. Given a punishment of standing on the bench and writing math-ematical tables for an imposition, Vallabh, at the age of 12, told his teacher that he wouldn’t accept 2 punishments for a single mistake and would prefer writing para-graphs / essays instead of math-ematical tables, as he felt writing tables by a 6th std student was an in-sult.
He was once fight-ing a case during when he received a telegram. He read through it and put it in his pocket and continued with his argument and went on to win the case. And, what did the telegram convey? – the death of his wife! His colleagues commented that ‘His will has triumphed the grief ’! Such was his will power and sense of duty. He was 33 when he lost his wife (29) and he never chose to remarry in the interest of his children.
In Gujarat, Vallabhbhai was the friend of peasants. When dacoits attacked or famine struck, he was with them to help them fight the government and restore their rights. The British government had to succumb to Patel’s fight to withdraw the taxes to be paid by the famine struck peasants.
In Bardoli, the British Gov-ernment planned to auction the lands of peasants. Patel surveyed all the 79 villages in the district and ascertained the people’s opinion and convinced them to protest against this and the auc-tion found no takers! He pre-pared the people especially wom-en for the struggle and ensured that they won’t mind if the British take away their cattle or grab the land.
Once in Bhadra, when he was the head of the health commit-tee, plague spread. He stayed with the people throughout and was never worried that he too will be affected. On various oc-
casions, he was hit with plague, pneumonia, typhoid and heart ailment. On all these occasions, he maintained his mental stam-ina. Though the diseases could hit his body, they could not just touch his will power and mental frame work.
Sardar was the architect be-hind united India. After police action the Nizam of Hyderabad also fell in line. Later when Patel visited Hyderabad, his position being the Deputy Prime Minis-
ter, the Nizam unwillingly received him at the
airport. The Nizam indirectly referring to his insubordi-nate action re-marked, “To err is human”. Patel acidly retorted, “But , e r ro r s have their conse-quences also”.
The flight that Sardar was travel-
ing in once had to be landed on emergency.
When the position of the plane was in peril and everyone was requested to escape through the emergency exit, Patel was commenting to his friend and co-passenger Maharaja, who was fat, that “you use the exit at last. If you get stuck at the emer-gency gate, nobody else can also escape”. Such was the stoicism and wittiness of Patel even when his life was at danger.
Once in Parliament, an MP asked him about the use of po-lice force against a riot – “How many times lathi charge was re-sorted to in containing the ri-ots?”. Pat came the reply from Patel, “How many times lathi charge was required, so many times it was resorted to.” For him, ‘when you want to strike, strike unto death.’
He lead a simple life. He was stubborn and steadfast, yet af-fectionate and compassionate towards people, so much that people said they could find ‘Ten-derness in Steel’, ‘Ice in a Vol-cano’.
Sardar, the Iron Man of India, was a man of few words, but, a Man of Action! It is time to in-voke his spirit of selflessness, justice, simplicity, courage, wit, administration, sense of duty, commitment to a cause in us…….may be this is what is called ‘living life to the fullest’!!
Let us imbibe Sardar in us! Long live his name! Long live his spirits in us!
In the winter season, safeguard yourself against dry and dehydrated skin. Give yourself oil massages, use cream-based products and ap-ply cold cream before sleeping, says an expert.
u Turn to cream-based products early: If winter is approaching, it’s time to turn to skincare products that have cream-based thick moistur-izers. So, your light water-based moisturizer will pave way for a heavy and thick cream.
Switch over to a milder facewash and use a sunscreen that has moisturiser. While removing make-up too, use moisturizing cleansers and toners.
u give yourself oil massages: Just when you wake up in the morning, give yourself 15 minutes to apply warm oil all over the body, including on the face and the scalp. Leave it for an hour as you finish your morning chores.
Then take a bath as usual and proceed for the day. This will go a long way in keeping your skin healthy, not just for the winter, but for a long time.
u Exfoliate and steam: As we apply more creams, more oil and more products to stave off the dehydrating winter chill, the skin pores sometimes get blocked. For this purpose, exfoli-ating skin once or twice every ten days is recom-mended.
Use a gentle scrub in circular motions on the skin to remove dead cells and clean up the skin. Once a month, also take recourse to steaming
therapy. This will help soften the skin, open pores, and remove white heads and acne.
u nourishing skin procedures: Visit a dermatologist just before the onset of winters and seek a good solution for skin dryness. Deep moisturizing hydra facials once a month can be of much help in treating, even preventing exces-sive dryness.
u Drink water: The icy cold weather often discourages us from drinking sufficient water and we tend to increase our skin dehydration due to this reason. Keep heated water in a thermostat. But keep drinking water to keep skin hydrated and prevent lips from cracking.
u Feet care: Cracked heels, irritated soles, and itchy and swollen feet can be a major irritant, but feet are often at the lowest end of our prior-ity. Apply cold cream to feet every night before going to bed.
Use an exfoliating agent to remove jagged and hard skin from the heels once every fortnight. It is extremely important to wear warm, preferably woollen socks in winters.
u Diet is important too: It is important to take a good intake of vitamin and minerals rich foods during winters to boost immunity and health. Consume a lot of fruits and vegetables, and take diet rich in Omega 3 fatty acids like fish to boost skin health and nourishment.

TnEB extends deadline
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board on Friday extended the deadline to pay power bills using demone-tised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes by three days, till midnight of November 14. The extension follows the Centre extending the date of paying the utility bills by three days. The earl ier deadline was to end on November 11 mid-night.
Indane plans to introduce small 5 kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders through supermarkets and malls. A customer who wants a new small-size cooking gas cylinder will have to pay Rs. 1,018, ex-cluding the safety hose and regulator. Of the total price of Rs. 1,018, Rs. 700 would go towards the cost of the cylinder and Rs. 318 for refill, according
to a source from the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOC), which owns the brand.
Indane had launched these cylinders in 2013 and they were made available through compa-ny-operated fuel outlets and gas agencies. However, the scheme failed to take off at fuel outlets.
The price of the cylinder has also been reduced from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 700. The connec-
tions would be made available over the counter. Consumers can produce any government-approved ID proof and pur-chase the cylinders. Residential proof is not necessary. Since the cylinders are targeted at people who are not permanent resi-dents of the city, there is a ‘buy back’ offer whereby consumers can return the cylinder and get Rs. 500 for it.
Mini gas cylinders in supermarkets soon

A cross-section of residents living in Bharathi-dasan Nagar in Mogappair West is encountering civic challenges in the form of open drainage and ill-maintained roads in their locality. The main road of Bharathidasan Nagar, which leads to the popular Mangal Eri Park, has not been re-laid after some repair works carried out by the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), allege local residents.
“The condition of the roads remains like this for the past eight months. Only the starting point of the road up to less than a kilo metre is badly maintained. If you go beyond this point, the same road is well maintained. Drainage is the major problem. Just opposite to my shop the canal is open and drainage water is flowing all the time. Due to change in climate, mosquito menace has also started. This canal has become a breeding ground for them,” says a shop keeper who presses clothes for the residents.
The road condition in Second and Third Streets of Bharathidhasan Nagar is also worse comparatively. “End of this street has a Shiva temple and people keep visiting the temple via this route. This road was dug up to give drainage connections and remains like this with the work left incomplete. Just opposite to my house, they have kept the canal open close to the compound wall. Many a time, we have to bear with the foul smell emanating from the canal. Since the canal is open it is difficult to send our kids out to play. We are heading towards winter season and there will be no control over mosquitoes,” complains Kumar who resides in the third street of Bharathidhasan Nagar.
Kala, who stays in the second street says, “In these streets some houses have got proper drain-age connection and a few houses are yet to get it. That is the cause for all sufferings. We are prone to Malaria and other communicable dis-eases. You cannot sit at home simply without shooing away mosquitoes. None of the mos-quito repellents are effective in this area. If you see other streets in Bharathidhasan Nagar, they are in much better condition. Just opposite to the third street you can see concrete road. But we are left to survive in this miserable condition for so long.”

A mobile van carry-ing traditional Ka-ruppatti (Palm
Jaggery) has become the centre of attraction for many Mogappaireans, who are increasingly get-ting wary of the health risks associated with con-sumption of white sugar. Mani who claims to bring the stock from Thoothu-kudi district in southern Tamil Nadu sells them on Electricity Board Road near Anjaneyar Temple. “I sell palm jaggery through
my van for two days every month in Mogappair East. I have regular customers who buy stock from me for a month. I am selling these products for 15 days in a month and rest of the days I will be with my family in Thoothukudi,” says Mani.
He also goes to other parts of Chennai to sell his products. “I don’t have a house in Chennai and so I stay in my van. I eat out-side and sleep in the van. Its difficult but this is my livelihood what to do?” he says.
He has cubes made up
of sukku, milagu, thippli, adhimadhuram and thood-huvalai which he claims are very good for health. “If we consume this mix-ing with tea or milk, we will not get cold very often.
We can also mix it with tender coconut water and drink. These days people are very much aware of the ill effects of white sugar and they want to go back to the olden days when we
used only palm sugar. It has nutrition whereas white sugar has chemicals and it causes harm to our health,” he says.
He sells one kg of Palm jaggery and panangkar-kandu for Rs 140 and Rs 220 respectively. “Every day I can sell my products up to Rs 2000 and make a little profit out of it. Some-times it will be very dull and I may not have money even to eat. I have a kid who is studying LKG and that is why I am working hard,” he said.
When asked about the adulteration in the prod-ucts which are the com-mon concerns among the customers, he said, “I buy products directly from Thoothukudi and Vu-dankudi. I genuinely be-lieve they are original. I am not cultivating them and so I cannot give them guaran-tee too. However I always try my level best to bring good products,” he says.

The residents of Mogappair West angered
by the delay in pro-viding sewer connec-tons have represented the issue to the Chen-nai Metrowater au-thorities recently. They recalled that the last time a sewer pipe-line was laid was seven years ago. Many residents had paid a deposit of Rs. 10,000 towards sewer connections back then. even after many years, this locality continues to be de-void of a proper sew-er network.
The underground drainage project was mooted in 2004, be-fore Ambattur was merged with the Chennai Corpora-tion. It is learnt that the project was di-vided into three phas-es for speedy execu-tion. But it has been facing several hic-cups, including the escalation of project cost and issues with the contractor.
An official of the federation of resi-dents’ welfare asso-ciation in Mogappair West, says residents continue to spend a minimum of Rs. 2,000 every month to hire sewer lorries to clear sewage.
“The construction of two sewage pump-ing stations in Red-dypalayam Road and Bharathi Salai were in the finishing stage. But work was stopped all of a sudden. We are planning to stage a demonstration if the work does not resume soon,” said PV Tamilselvan, for-mer councillor.

Using Cubes To Teach ColoursBy Our Correspondent
A group of mentally-challenged chil-dren are at ease
trying to learn to solve the Rubik’s Cube along with other children from R. Bindu Priyanka, who con-
ducts classes for them on a regular basis.
S u b a t h r a ( n a m e changed) cannot identify
colours properly. For her, white means black and she is also a very slow learner who cannot mix and match colours. It is a challenge for Priyanka who deals with them patiently and teaches the colours and makes them solve cubes.
“Solving cubes will make their brain sharper and will enhance their thinking ability. There are
many positive factors in-volved in playing cubes. Hand to eye coordination is getting improved and it will improve their learning ability. It also improves their concentration. It is full of calculations and generally maths. It brings
out lot of changes among the children who learn and prac-tice regularly and for special children it definitely helps them to sharpen their mind to some extent. One can feel the differences obvi-ously. If they iden-tify white colour as black then I will also identify the co-lours in the same pattern which they think. We need to have lot of patience to make them solve the cubes. Many of
the under privileged kids have only single parent. They are very happy to see their kids doing some-
thing,” says Priyanka. She has trained around
60 students. She claims to teach the art for the special children and also econom-ically weaker children at free of cost. “This Sunday we are conducting cube solving competitions. As of now we have got 57 entries and the best time solver will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 5000. One of my students who is just three-and-a-half years old will solve many things tomorrow within a few minutes,” she claimed.
Pr iyanka who got placed in a software com-pany was not able to work for more than a week. “I got night shifts and I thought of doing some-thing different. Initially I started an academy to teach chess since I won in many tournaments. Then gradually I included a vari-ety of arts such as Jewel-lery design, Cube solving, western dance, phonetics and many such things.”
S.SHIrEn (V Std) of SBoA and SAnA AZMI of V kids nolambur won the first and third prizes respectively in the Art Fest & write well state level competition held last Sunday.
