ITR filing deadline extended by 1 month

The government on Thursday extended the deadline for filing income tax return for assessment year 2018-19. The deadline of July 31, 2018 has been extended by a

month.That means the assessees can file their income tax

return (ITR) for financial year 2017-18 by August 31 without any penalty charges. The taxman imposes a fine up to Rs. 10,000 for delayed filing of income tax returns. Filing the income tax return after the new deadline of August 31 will attract a penalty of up to Rs. 10,000 as per existing rules.

In a few months from now the Thirumangalam Police Station, one of the earliest police stations to come up in the Anna Nagar neighbourhood, will be housed in a brand new modern building. Con-struction work on the new building for the police sta-tion is on in full swing at the same venue where the old police station was lo-

cated. The new building is being constructed as part of the Tamil Nadu Gov-ernment’s ongoing drive to modernise the police sta-tions and provide better amenities for the police force as well as for mem-bers of the public who visit police stations for lodging complaints, ac-cording to a police officer posted in the Anna Nagar range, who requested ano-nymity.

“The old Thiruman-galam Police Station build-ing was constructed many years ago. Renovating the building was out of ques-tion as the building was small. There was a pressing need for a modern building keeping in tune with the changing times. We need modern amenities to assist us in tech-aided investiga-tions. We will have enough space in the new building that is coming up seating

all our personnel as well as for entertaining complain-ants,” said the officer. He pointed out that in the old police station building even the Thirumangalam All Women Police Station was functioning in a one-room dingy space on the same compound.

Very recently, the Nol-ambur Police Station in the Mogappair neighbourhood was modernised. The Thi-rumangalam Police Sta-

tion will be the next mod-ernised building in the Anna Nagar-Mogappair neighbourhood.

“The look and feel of a police station must change. Instead of inducing fear among people, the police station must inspire confi-dence in them to visit and lodge a complaint. Old and dingy police stations usually put off people and also make it unfriendly for women. Therefore many

people fear visiting a po-lice station even to lodge complaints. Having mod-ern buildings for police stations will go a long way in eradicating this fear,” said Rajendran, a lawyer and resident of Anna Nagar West. In recent years many old police sta-tion buildings have been demolished in the Greater Chennai Police limits and new buildings have been constructed.

Whether the speed breakers put up on Church Road, near Santosh Garden, lead-ing to the Poonamallee High road is needed or not but unnecessary speed breakers or those that flout specifications are sure to

cause accidents. Corporation officials though are wary of the risks associated with speed breakers, should ensure that road us-ers are aware of the presence of a speed breaker. Boards warning motorists and drivers will have to be erected, with che-quered white and black markings and reflec-tors to alert drivers during night time. This is not to be. Will the authorities concerned do the needful at the earliest.

inger Madhu Iyer is pleasantly surprised that her number ̀ Setthu Pochu Manasu’ has

been the pick of the four in ‘Peranbu’ where the musical score of Yuvan Shankar Raja had been talked about in length.

In Madhu’s view, a pathos number has a slim chance of gaining the spotlight from a composer known for his melo-dies and the rap-knuckling kuthu numbers. “All I got to know from director Ram was to bring in the feelings of a child longing for love, lost in the world of hers.

Only later I ascertained that the song was on a special child, with the movie revolving on that character. The song gelled in main to the minimal instru-ments with only tabla in lead, propelling the tune with its rhythm and rendition.”

A child singer drawn into the keyboards at the tender age of four, Madhu is a proficient carnatic singer, fine tuning her knowledge under stalwarts P Vasanth Kumar (carnatic) and Sriram Parasuram (Hindu-stani). Her strong belief is that a solid base in carnatic lays the foundation for a singer to tra-verse and a call card from the movies.

“It is true that a hit song in a movie takes a singer to phenom-enal heights and a universal reach. Thanks to a few hit numbers, I had been part of Il-

aiyaraaja’s shows abroad, get-ting a feel of the audience taste all over the globe. Momentarily, I was stumped when a request came for an evergreen old num-ber but could deliver thanks to the technology where I could get the lyrics and the small mat-ter of lending the voiced to the desired pitch.”

Among her recent hits, Mad-hu picks the ̀ Mazhai Pozhindum Neram’ in ‘Oru Kuppathu Kad-hai’, a peppy number bringing out the desired feelings of a woman looking for love beyond her married life. “Such numbers lift your spirit where the instruc-tions are loud and clear that the feelings have to be brought out aesthetically. I am at home in such numbers when the lyrics are meaningful and nothing to read between the lines.”

Indeed, Madhu has come a long way since her debut num-ber ‘Deva Devadhai’ eased into the hearts of the youth in ‘Ama-ra Kaviyam’. Folk numbers are fine with her, profiting im-mensely from the experience being part of Ramji’s Mazhalai singers in the formative years.

Madhu’s ‘Pookale’ cover song for Put Chutney won her rave reviews where she interpreted the song along with exponents Abhang Jodhpurkar and Ra-mesh Vaidya. She desires to come up with single video al-bums, with the desired freedom to rung in her ideas as to how much music can envelop an individual and the distant heights one could aspire for.

Not surprisingly, Madhu re-veals that her not distant dream is to perform a solo carnatic concert at the prestigious Sabha season at Music Academy. As of now, she is well ensconced, getting her palate of songs and the distance of the reach, thanks to the number of tours she is privileged to be part of.

A medium sized pit that has been dug up inside the Millen-nium Park located on the Park Road in Anna Nagar Western Extension has become a cause for worry for a section of parents who visit the park. They fear that with the monsoon set to arrive in a few weeks, the pit could be filled with water posing some serious concerns over safety of children, especially toddlers.

The pit has been dug up on the ground along the walker’s path on the left side of the park that is visited by hundreds of people on a daily basis. Many walkers say they are unaware of why the pit was dug up.

“Right now not many people venture into this side of the ground and everyone uses the space elsewhere to play cricket and badminton or do physical

exercises. But with kids one can never be sure. My worry is that if during monsoon the pit gets covered under a sheet of water

one cannot rule out accidental drowning of toddlers who enter this area,” says Kamini a resi-dent of Anna Nagar Western

Extension.Children tend to run here and

there and are difficult to rein in, say parents. “Even though I hold my daughter’s hand while walk-ing around the park, there are occasions when I have found that she would manage to break free from my hold and run around. On one occasion, she managed

to get down to the ground but I pulled her back. Right now this pit is open and we can guard our children against venturing there. But during a heavy rain spell there is every possibility of the pit being filled with water. A weak moment could lead to a tragedy,” cautions Shobana, a mother of a four-year-old.

“I sincerely wish that urgent steps are taken to cover this pit as it is definitely a safety hazard for children. Or if the pit has been dug up for some specific purpose, they should at least erect barricades around it so that children won’t accidentally trip into it,” she adds.

An elderly visitor to the park Narasimhan recalls that over 10 years ago a kindergarten child who had visited the Anna Nagar Tower Park as part of a school picnic had fallen into a similar pit that was covered under water and drowned. “We must prevent any such incident here,” he adds.

Property tax hike reduced in Tn

The State government has announced a reduction in prop-erty tax rates for rented residen-tial buildings in urban local bodies. According to an official release, the hike in property tax for rented residential buildings has been reduced from 100% to 50% after residents’ associations and NGOs demanded a roll-back.

However, the 50% hike in property tax rates for other resi-dential buildings and the 100% increase for non-residential buildings remains unchanged.

Mohini, released Friday, music composer Aruldev is richer with the experience of a horror thriller.

Having assisted director Madesh during the making of ‘Madura’, Aruldev said it was relatively simple to know the expectation from the mass di-rector.

In a movie shot extensively in the hustle and bustle Lon-don save for the opening frames in Chennai, Aruldev saw it imperative to have his score enveloped with negative shades. “Among the highlights is a car chase shot in the night where the BGM effect had to be on a par with Hollywood level. I could not have the

luxury of using many instru-ments for the effect would have been lost. That is a high point of the movie and I had the freedom to decide on the minimal use of instruments for the telling effect.”

Candidly, Aruldev acceded that horror films are not easy to handle for a composer. “The immediate task is to inject the fear in the mindset of the audi-ence. They had to be trans-ported in that level till the cli-max unfolds. There was the director’s pat for a good work done when a sequence had Trisha clinging to the rope for dear life and the panic expres-sions had to be brought out musically.”

Movie is all about team work and happy to have played his part is Aruldev. If his work gets noticed it is fine but what really matters to him is the reward of the audience verdict for the film as the whole,” he says.

Many motorists, par-ticularly drivers of heavy vehicles such as bus and tanker lorry, were put to a great deal of inconvenience this past week due to ongo-ing civic works on the Second Main Road in Am-battur Industrial Estate. The civic works that in-volved digging up of the road near the junction of the Second Main Road, close to Wavin Bus Stop.

The contractor, who undertook the exercise of completing the civic proj-ect, had placed iron barri-cades at the entrance of the Second Main Road mak-ing it difficult for drivers to negotiate a right turn from the Mogappair-Ambattur Estate Road side. Being a bus route, the problem was aggravated further for road users.

Many buses belonging to the Metropolitan Trans-port Corporation have to use the Second Main Road to reach the Ambattur In-

dustrial Estate Road on a daily basis. Similarly many private buses belonging to some companies located in the Ambattur Estate and dozens of share auto rick-shaws also take the road on a daily basis transporting hundreds of blue collar and white collar workers who are employed in the many factories and estab-lishments in the industrial estate.

“Since the road was bar-ricaded, we often faced the issue of traffic congestion at this spot for quite some days. Bus driver had to take a right from the ex-treme corner of the road to avoid hitting the barri-cade,” explained Srikumar, a regular bus commuter and an employee of an Information Technology company in Ambattur In-dustrial Estate. “Not just that, for those riding two-wheelers it became a tough task to ensure that they went ahead of the bus without getting rammed,” he added.

1st Campus Community Radio in Country

Anna Community Radio, the first campus com-munity radio in the country, has decided to engage female community volunteers to produce pro-grammes.

Located at the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC), on the Anna University Cam-pus, the community radio will organise programmes through female local community volunteers to benefit the local community. It will focus on civic issues, education, health, food and personal hygiene among others. The students from Anna University will form a team to identify pressing civic problems in the city.

Motorists also com-plained that during most part of the day no police-man was deployed by the Chennai City Traffic Police at this spot to regulate the flow of traffic. “The police-man mostly was standing on the other side of the road. So it was left to driv-ers to negotiate the turn at this spot,” claimed Ragura-man, a bus commuter.

“Even two-wheeler rid-

ers who were following MTC buses to take a turn found it extremely difficult to negotiate this turn. They faced the real threat of ramming into the side rear of the buses due to the manner in which the bus drivers were forced to take the right turn,” said Mo-hanraj, who works as a lathe worker in a factory in Ambattur Industrial Estate.
