Residents of Ambika Street in Mogappair East are lamenting over the unregulated and un-checked dumping of gar-bage right at the entrance of the street, which can be accessed through the Church Road that helps connect the neighbour-hood with the New Madu-ravoyal Bridge.

The pile of garbage that one sees just alongside the signboard announcing the arrival of Ambika Street is something that no one can miss during the day. Not

even the courier and food delivery representatives. In fact, some of the residents rued and claimed that of-ten they get a call from the food delivery representa-tive or the courier delivery agent, asking “I am wait-ing near that place where garbage is piled up. Is this the spot where I have to take a turn to reach your place?”

“So this proves that the dumping of garbage is so conspicuous at this spot yet quite ironically, I must say, this has not attracted the attention of the authorities of the Greater Chennai

Residents plead for filling large pothole on College Road

Residents and motorists in Mogappair are pleading for covering a large pothole that has developed at the turning of College Road just ahead of the merger of the road with Kavimani Salai.

The College Road is widely used by residents of Mogappair East and parts of Mogappair West who want to travel to or from Nolambur avoiding the traffic on the Mogappair West MTC Bus Depot Main Road. In the return direction, i.e. when motor-ists come from Nolambur to Mogappair via College Road, they hit a large pot-hole at the turning of the road on the left side.

“Unlike the regular pot-holes on the road, this one is large and since it is in a turning point the risk of vehicles getting damaged or motorists on two-wheel-ers skidding and falling

down are high. You can’t judge the pothole from a distance, especially after the fall of dusk,” said Keerthirajan, a resident of Mogappair, who was seen taking extra care to avoid hitting the pothole. “For

car drivers, especially those driving a hatchback, it is difficult to spot the pothole till the time they reach very close to the place. Invari-ably they end up riding into the pothole and getting their chassis damaged. A

huge thud also affects their wheel alignment and they have to spend about Rs 350 to Rs 400 to get the align-ment checked again,” he pointed out.

Motorists and residents said that the pothole is the result of rains and regular wear and tear and has been around for a few months now with no authority of the Greater Chennai Cor-poration bothering to even inspect it. “If we ask the engineers of the civic agen-cy to repair this I am sure they would come up with the usual officialdom talk of floating tenders, finalis-ing contractors, et al. But the simple solution for this is to fill the pothole with debris so that accidents can be avoided. I hope they will do this at the earliest,” said another motorist Nagesh-waran. “There is no point in waiting for an accident to happen before the offi-cials decide to act,” he added.

Roping in Hyderabad mimicry artiste Hiro-shini Komali for the female lead had come as a shot in arm for the director. “She has a job to reform the wayward ways of her love, who finds succour in the company of a female teacher, enacted by Veyil-fame Priyanka. The college segments had been kept to the minimal as that would have given a different colour to the final denouement. The climax has brought the best out of Priyanka, where she takes on singlehand-edly the might of the police.”

Not compromising on the commercial aspects of a gaana song where singer Sudhakar brings out the essence of true friendship, Raja said the soul of the movie is the songs with composer Raghunandan in his elements. “The main lead Roshan is not the proverbial one you will find in a college. He has the theatrical background and was game to be pushed to the limits in the action sequences. Journalist Ravishankar as the ex-college student has rendered the perfect bal-ance in scenarios which called for maturity in handling sensitive issues.”

Neighbourhood associa-tions can now contact the Greater Chennai Police to conduct an awareness camp in their respective localities on the Kavalan SOS App that was launched some months ago. Already the Anna Nagar Police had car-ried out a wide publicity exercise on the Kavalan SOS App last year. Mogappair Mail had in July last year highlighted this exercise in a quest to create awareness about the same.

According to a police of-ficer in the west zone of the Greater Chennai Police, representatives of residents' welfare associations and educational institutions can approach the respective po-

lice stations requesting to hold an awareness camp in their areas on the Kavalan SOS App. "Ever since we launched the App, it has at-tracted huge attention. In fact, we are surprised that the Kavalan SOS App has been downloaded by a whopping one million users of Android phones from the Google Play Store alone. That indi-cates the level of interest among the people to have access to a mobile phone application that would help them contact the police dur-ing an emergency," said a police officer.

Asked why the Greater Chennai Police had offered to conduct awareness camps in neighbourhoods, educa-tional institutions and facto-ries when the app is already

a hit, the officer said, "Youngsters will find it easy but not all people are tech savvy. People also have raised doubts as to why we are asking for permission to read the contact list and media folders while launch-ing the app. When face to face meetings are held, we can help clarify all doubts and also explain to the el-derly people and those who are not comfortable with technology on how to use the mobile application," he explained. Besides, a police officer in Anna Nagar ex-plained that when awareness camps are held for groups of people it is more effective to spread the right message.
