Traffic Cops to get body cams soon
Now that the judiciary has begun imposing revised fines for drunk driving under the new act, the city traffic police plans to gear up as body worn cameras will be of great help to enforcement of-
ficers before the act is put into real effect. The body-worn cameras would be
distributed by in a weeks time according to an additional commissioner. After these cameras were introduced on a trial basis last year, senior officers say it was useful especially in instances where there were public-police confrontations.
As enforcement of helmet rule for pil-lion riders as per Madras High Court’s
instructions led to frequent conflicts be-tween the police and public, the officers anticipate a similar situation when the revised fines are introduced. Also, with the fines having been increased up to five times even for small offences, the Police department wants to ensure that traffic police personnel issue e-challan and don’t receive bribes from the violators.
The body-worn cameras would be
internet-enabled and connected to a cen-tral server for the officers to check any camera at any time, thus making the enforcement officers work in a respon-sible manner.
In addition to the upgraded e-challan machines provided for the traffic enforce-ment officers to make fines cashless, cameras are also expected to bring down the allegations of bribery.
42,000 Copies Distributed every Sunday in and around Mogappair East & West, Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar West Extn., Golden George Nagar, Mogappair Eri Scheme, Nolambur, Part of Ayanambakkam & Maduravoyal.

Protruding manholes on roads cause concern
By Our Correspondent
Manholes have not been covered properly on some roads in and around the neighbourhoods of Mogap-pair and Anna Nagar caus-ing inconvenience to motor-ists. The manholes – sewer-age main outlets – have to be covered properly with a circular shaped concrete slab.
However, at some places the slabs have not been placed properly due to which the concrete slabs are protruding on the road – that is they are placed above the surface level of the
road. Motorists are com-plaining that such protrud-ing slabs have not only been the cause of accidents but also end up badly damaging the vehicles especially the chassis of cars and vans which have low ground clearance.
A section of motorists says that from a distance it is difficult to notice if the slab covering the manhole has been fixed evenly or is protruding because it is on the ground. “Only on ap-proaching the manhole slab we can realise that it is protruding and by the time we react to it and try to
swerve a bit it is too late and our chassis gets hit badly,” said Madhav, a resident of Mogappair West, who drives a car.
One such protruding manhole’s cement slab is on Pari Salai, a main bus route road in Mogappair East. This manhole is lo-cated close to the Tamil Nadu State Apex Coopera-tive (TNSC) Bank. “The workers, who placed the slab to cover the manhole, did not do a thorough job of it. Instead they simply embedded it on the surface in a haphazard manner due to which the slab can be seen significantly protrud-ing above the road surface on one side. Many a times, cars and vans that pass by run over the slab and we can here a loud thud due to the impact caused by it,” said Tamilvannan, who works in a small shop in the vicinity.
Vivek, a resident of a lane off Pari Salai, who owns a car complains,
“Even though I am aware of this protruding slab my attempts to avoid hitting it have failed on many occa-sions due to oncoming ve-hicles. My car’s wheel alignment gets affected ev-ery now and then because of this. I hope the officials will fix the slab properly.”

4-in-one pill cuts heart attacks,
strokes
A cheap daily pill that combines four drugs cut the risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart failure in a large study, suggesting it could be a good way to help prevent heart problems especially in poor countries.
The pills contained two blood pressure drugs, a cho-lesterol medicine and aspi-rin. Many people can’t afford or don’t stick with taking so many medicines separately, so doctors think a polypill might help. A previous study testing one in India found it lowered cholesterol and blood pressure. The new study is much larger and gives stronger evidence be-cause it tracked heart attacks, strokes and other problems
not just risk factors. It involved about 6,800
people in Iran, ages 50-75, some with previous heart problems and others without them. All got advice on healthy lifestyles and half also were given polypills. After five years, 6% of those in the pill group had suffered a heart attack, stroke or heart failure versus 9% of the oth-ers. That worked out to a
34% lower risk with the polypill, and a 22% lower risk after researchers took into account other heart drugs that participants were taking. People who took the polypill most faithfully, at least 70% of the time, had even bigger reductions in heart risks.
The bene f i t mos t ly seemed to come from lower-ing cholesterol; blood pres-
sure didn’t significantly change. Side effects were similar in both groups. Some who developed a cough while on the polypill were switched to another version that substituted one of the four drugs. All of the drugs are cheap generic medicines now. One study leader said the results show the polypill is a “viable strategy” to pre-vent heart disease in develop-ing countries. “It’s much simpler to give people one medication that manages a couple of risk factors at the same time.”
Marshall said, however, the benefits would be mini-mal for people who already have access to good health care. Source: Internet

Govt to operate 200 special buses for Velankanni festival
Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Cor-poration (SETC) will operate 200 special buses to Velankanni for the annual festival. The buses will depart from main cities in the south that act as transit points. In Chennai, these buses will leave from Egmore, Tambaram and Koyambedu Chennai Moffusil Bus Terminus (CMBT) and many will take the East Coast Road (ECR) route to reach Velankanni in Nagapattinam district. “This is to ensure that passengers from south Chennai don’t travel all the way to CMBT and travel all the way back along the same route,” according to an SETC official.
All these 200 buses are air-conditioned with seaters, seater-cum sleeper berths and non-A/C air buses (deluxe/ultra deluxe services). Pas-sengers can book tickets on www.redbus.in, www.paytm.com, www.busindia.com and www.tnstc.com (government’s official web-site). Bookings are open now. Those booking tickets will receive the bus conductor’s mobile number and vehicle registration number through an SMS.
Thangam Colony Shaken by Busting of Illegal Phone TowerBy N Rathi Chithra
The quiet and peaceful neighbourhood of Than-gam Colony in Anna Nagar was shaken this past Thursday when sleuths of the Crime Branch CID (CB-CID) raided a ground floor com-mercial establishment and busted an illegal telephone tower setup.
Neighbours could not believe that the DRAV
Telecommunication, that was functioning on the ground floor of a building on I Block, 36th Street in Thangam Colony, was an illegal set up that chose to bypass the Indian telecom-munication system to make illegal calls abroad. The CB-CID had launched investigations into the case upon receiving a com-plaint from the Depart-ment of Telecom that some people were illegally
using SIM Boxes to route illegal mobile phone calls abroad thereby causing a huge loss to telecom com-panies. A SIM Box, a CB-CID note said, can route international calls through the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) connec-tion and connect the local call as local traffic. This allows the illegal operator to bypass local mobile network and undercut prices for international
calls.This is a criminal of-
fence under Section 20 and 21 of the Telegraph Act 1885 and also attracts penalty for cheating and other offences under the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act.
The police found that illegal phone tower was set up in Thangam Colony by DRAV Telecommuni-cation using 21 SIM Box-es, 16 network routers, 1,500 SIM cards and WiFi dongles. The CB-CID sleuths arrested five per-sons from the establish-ment including the illegal
company’s director named Muppiri Reddy. They then dismantled the illegal phone tower.
“We never knew that this was an illegal telecom-munications company. We thought it was an ordinary telecom company like any other outlet you find in the city. We would find a steady clientele for the shop and thought that
maybe he was offering discounts. But now it has shocked us to learn that the firm was operated through illegal phone tow-er. This is something we never fathomed,” said a shopkeeper in the vicinity, who however requested not to be named. “I don’t want to get into trouble with the police, you see,” he said with a smile.
To commemorate the Madras Week Celebrations, Velammal Main School, Mogappair campus, organized an awareness seminar on ‘Landmarks of Madras’ for the students of Class VI to VIII. Mrs C Geetha, Asst.Profes-sor, Dept. of History and Tourism, SDNB Vaishnav College for Women, Chrompet conducted the session
which focused on the origin of Madras and how Chen-nai is known for its culture, geographical features, new developments such as Medical tourism, IT industry.
Various competitions such as album making, poster making and essay writing was conducted and prize winners honoured.

California based Pop singer Hitha has kept the people in her region in a trans-fixed state with her musical spell. Hail-
ing from Karnataka, the land that embraces ethnic tradition and culture through arts and music, this 14-yr old singer has proved her prow-ess. With her fame spreading out with acclaims, Media Works Yogendran invited her to perform a show here in Chennai.
Accepting this invite, she gave her perfor-mance through the show named ‘Inspired by Hitha’ on August 3 at Maharishi School Ground (located behind Mahendra City). Since, she is completely new to Chennai and hadn’t given any performances earlier, it left many doubting on the reception, especially for tickets based entry. Surprisingly, the entire stadium was stormed with an unbelievable crowd, who cel-ebrated her musical spell. Right from the begin-ning of the show till the end, the audiences were equipped with huge energy, especially the kids who started dancing for her last 4 numbers. What turned to be more appealing was the entire crowd giving a 10-minute standing ovation after the final performance. With a wowing response, Hitha will be soon working with the leading music directors of Tamil and Telugu film indus-try.

Bringing to light a truth
The title ‘Mei’ is a give-away that the script had been sharpened based on a true happening. Witness to that, debutant director SA Baskaran felt he had a job at hand to convey the vagaries of the medical world. Once he had Aish-warya Rajesh convinced of the material, the direc-tor said things fell in place when his good friend Senthil Murugesan con-verted the one-liner into a story.
An assistant of Jeethu Joseph during the ‘Papa-nasam’ days, Baskaran said the best thing about it was to get closer with Kamal Haasan. “I was richer with valuable in-puts which went a long way when my debut call came. What I learned was there is no such thing as a simple take. Every minut-est details were stored in my mind before the
shoot.”A woman medical rep
(Aishwarya) in a sup-posed male bastion is not heard of. But then the di-rector said he had penned the script keeping her in mind. “The content need-ed a strong mind but not
head strong character. She feels the onus is on her to reveal the darker side of the hospital, having had the privilege to meet the top brass. Though it is ac-cepted that the human-ness has taken a beating in the medical profession, it
is up to the individual to take the issue. There is the meekness on the common man to settle the bill even without giving a cursory glance at the amount gen-erated.”
Much as he would have liked to send a message or two at the end of it, Bas-karan said he was com-mitted to showcase the happenings and let the audience dec ide. “A length of time was in-vested in gathering the facts and presenting it in a fair manner was in defer-ence to the wishes of the production house. After all, every hospital invests a huge fortune which had to be taken into account. But then, the patients should not be taken for granted when they are at the total mercy of the doc-tors.”
Baskaran felt happy to render the openings for new faces like NRI Nicky Sundaram, V N Mohan (cinematographer); Pre-ethi Mohan (Editing), Mahesh Mathew (Stunt); music composer Prithvi Kumar and Anil Johnson (Background score).

Broken play equipment poses threat to kids
By N Rathi Chithra
The safety of children visiting the Mangal Eri Park in Mogappair has become a cause for serious concern as many of the play equipment at the park are in a damaged condi-tion. The play equipment such as seesaw, swings and play gym were installed in the park, which is main-tained by the Greater Chennai Corporation, only about two or three years ago. However, now many of the play equipment have
been partly broken expos-ing children to the risk of injury.
The Mangal Eri Park, one of the largest public parks in the neighbour-hood of Mogappair, is visited by hundreds of adults and children on a daily basis with the crowd swelling in the evenings and on weekends and holi-days.
However, in recent months children have been greeted by damaged play equipment. For instance the seats of the seesaw are
broken and iron rods pro-truding from some of play equipment.
“I am surprised that none of the authorities concerned have taken no-tice of the risks posed by these damaged play equip-ment to children. The pos-sibility of children sustain-ing injuries cannot be ruled out as some seats of the seesaw are half-broken and they could fall from it. Besides, there are sharp edges from broken handles and steel rods that can cause serious bleeding in-
juries in case of accidental fall,” pointed out Valliap-pan, an elderly visitor to the Mangal Eri Park.
Children too are com-plaining. “The very reason we come to the park is for some recreation. But here we are unable to play
peacefully as half the equipment is damaged and not in a usable condition. The seats of the swings too have developed cracks in them. No one has bothered to get them repaired. We are very disappointed over this,” said Shakeelan, a
Velammal Matric. Hr.Sec.School, Mogappair West, won the under-14 singles and under 17 doubles titles respectively at the RDG/BDG Porur Zonal badminton tournament held at the

Parents like Sumithra of Vellalar Street, said that the sooner the Greater Chen-nai Corporation authori-ties turn their attention to the problem and replace the play equipment, the better for the children of Mogappair. “After all what use are broken play equip-ment for,” she asked.
