Velammal’s six-year-old Sarah’s rare feat

Sarah Charles, a class 1 student of Velammal Vidyalaya Annexure, seemed at ease despite the task that lay ahead of her on Noveme-ber 22 morning. The young girl attempted to solve the 2 by 2 Ru-bik’s Cube in less than two min-utes. As Sarah solved puzzles with ease, her parents Charles Daniel Raj and Julie were quick to spot her talent.

She put on a blindfold and went on to surprise one and all and achieve the feat. She solved five cubes in two minutes and seven seconds as timed by the Tamil Nadu Cube Association. She did so while while simultaneously reciting lines from a Tamil poem penned by lyricist Vairamuthu.

The association will send Sar-ah’s video to the Guinness Book

of World Records. Bindu Priyan-ka, founder of the Tamil Nadu Cube Associaton said. “Once we send the video to the Guinness Book of World Records, they will get back to us with the guidelines and then we can get her to par-ticipate for the world record.” Former news reader Ms. Fathima Babu was the Chief Guest.

10 bus depots to be renovated

The Tamil Nadu transport department will soon renovate 10 government bus stands and depots at an estimated cost of Rs 50 crore.

Metropolitan Transport Cor-poration has already started re-pairing some of them in Chennai based on complaints from pas-sengers. Repair work was nearing completion at Anna Nagar and Iyyapanthangal bus depots in Chennai.

This includes relaying of dam-aged roads, removing condemned spare parts dumped in corners, painting, repairing damaged ceil-ings, employees work and rest area. More importantly concrete stoppers have been strengthened so that bus parking becomes safer.

Call to restore bus services

The Anna Nagar Western Extension Association (AN-WEA) has appealed to the

Tamil Nadu Government to restore many bus services of Metropolitan Transport Cor-poration from the Anna Nagar West bus Depot to various places that were stopped in-cluding bus route 7F.

If you are wondering why the Metropolitan Transport Cor-poration (MTC) has not es-tablished a bus stop close to

the Thirumangalam junction on Second Avenue Road (Roundtana to Thirumangalam stretch), the reason is a legal injunction grant-ed by the Madras High Court. That is why the Thirumangalam bus stop in the return direction is closer to the Metro Rail Station and not near the junction.

As you pass by the Second Avenue Road, you can spot a motorcycle parked near to a pri-vate bank’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) on the roadside with a blue notice board hanging by its side. “High Court Stay on Establishing Bus Stand” reads the notice painted in white on a blue board. The owner of a house that is located at the spot on Second Avenue Road had moved the Ma-dras High Court and obtained an order restraining the authorities concerned from setting up a bus stand opposite the house. The board warns that if the order is violat-ed then it would attract punishment as per law i.e. con-tempt of court pro-ceedings.

A similar board – but smaller in size – containing the same wordings in Tamil has been put up on the gate of the staircase of

the building whose owner had obtained the stay order from the court.

Inquiries with authorities of the Anna Nagar West Depot of the Metropolitan Transport Corpora-tion revealed that initially there was a proposal to open a bus stand at the spot. “After the Anna Nagar Roundtana-Thir umangalam stretch opened up for two-way traffic following the operation of the Metro Rail network, we had a proposal to set up a bus stand at the spot. The idea was to benefit bus commuters who stay in the nearby vicinity. However, the owner of the house located on Second Avenue Road had moved a writ petition in the Madras High Court and obtained a restraining order,” an official said.

Some bus commuters though were sympathetic to the owner. “Obviously when a bus stop is established opposite one’s house it would pose a lot of inconve-nience for its occupants. So it is only natural for someone to take legal recourse to get the bus stand spot shifted,” said a commuter.

Visitors to the Greater Chennai Corporation Park on Thirumangalam Main Road are put off by the sight of piled up garbage near the entrance. The park located near the Padikup-pam Road Junction and which was opened only about a year ago, is being frequented by residents of some of the apartments that are situated in and around the vicinity.

Of late residents com-plain that unidentified per-sons are dumping garbage near its entrance on and off and the same is not cleared regularly by conservation workers engaged by the private agency that has bagged the contract for garbage clearance from the

“Previously we had to go all the way to the Mil-lennium Park located on

Park Road in Anna Nagar Western Extension for our morning walk as we did not have any other lung space in this locality. One

Jagadeeswari, a house-wife and mother of a sev-en-year-old schoolboy, said, that the litter poses another challenge for her. “I tell my son that he should throw wastes only the trash bin. In his school too he is taught the same thing. But the other day when he saw the piled up garbage here, he too dropped a chocolate wrap-per on it and justified it saying when so many peo-ple are littering why he can’t! I was helpless when he confronted me,” she added.

It is no surprise that recent studies have found that teenagers spend a lot of time on their mobile devices. In fact, according to recent reports, teenagers now spend more than one third of each day with digital technology. Re-search says that teens spend nine hours each day engaged with a mobile device and this included using social media, watch-ing videos, listening to music and playing games.

Given those statistics, it seems that mobile devices and the use of social me-dia that typically comes with it, could be a factor in anxiety and depression among teens. However, a recent study suggests that

social media may not be as much of a problem as other studies have previ-ously shown. An eight-year study conducted by Brigham Young Universi-ty (BYU) found that the amount of time spent on social media is not directly increasing anxiety or de-pression in teenagers.

A researcher explained that the increase in use of social media didn’t make respondents more de-pressed, nor did decreased use result in less anxiety. Most previous research has only looked at the short-term impacts of so-cial media on users, but the BYU study instead covered an extended peri-od. -Agencies

invited applications for the ‘Best Science Teacher Awards’ for 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. The award will be given by the department of higher education.

A release said the award will be given to ten school teachers — five from Tam-il medium and as many from open category — from government and gov-ernment-aided high school and higher secondary schools. The awards will be given for mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, geogra-

phy and agricultural sci-ence categories and carry a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and a certificate. “The award has been instituted to identify outstanding sci-ence teachers, to encour-age and honour them and to motivate teachers to provide better education,” the release stated. The work on con-structing a multi-storied Tamil Nadu

Housing Board complex on Seethakathi Salai, adja-cent to the JJ Nagar Fire and Rescue Station and near the V3 Police Station in Mogappair East that was to house Government offices and commercial establishments has been delayed.

In March this year, Mogappair Mail had re-ported how an old multi-storied building in dilapi-dated state, which once housed the office of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board, was being razed to construct the first such complex that would have both Government and pri-vate establishment co-exist-ing in the locality was on. At that time, officials of the

Tamil Nadu Housing Board had said that the work would be completed as scheduled within nine months from the date of commencement of work, which was last year.

However, a visit to the spot recently showed that construction work was still in progress and that it might take a few more months before the building is completed in all aspects and thrown open for pub-lic. A local resident, who did not wish to be named, pointed out to a board that has to be mandatorily placed at sites where public works are being undertak-en and said, “See it does not have the date of com-mencement of work and scheduled date of comple-tion of work.” The resident said that obviously the contractor has overshot the deadline and hence these

crucial dates were partially erased from the board. The Board says the duration of the project is nine months but in the fields meant for date of commencement of work only the year 2018 is visible. Likewise, the date of completion has only 2019 with the date and month erased.

“This is indeed unfortu-nate and goes against the spirit of transparency that is much needed in execut-ing works that are public in nature and are undertaken by government agencies. It is perfectly understandable that civil works sometimes do get dragged beyond the scheduled deadline on ac-count of some extraneous factors. The contractor can simply mention that in-stead of keeping the people guessing as to when the work will be completed,” he said.
