When it comes to breaking rules, some people ap-

pear to derive some inexpli-cable pleasure out of it or so it seems. Take the Mangal Eri Park in Mogappair for in-stance. The Greater Chennai Corporation, which main-tains the vast park along with a water body located in the middle, has put up sign-boards cautioning people not to sit on the grassland near the pond in the park. How-ever, on a daily basis many people could be seen violat-ing this rule and instead

comfortably sit on the grass-lands. In fact, due to such misuse the grass patch is not seen on many places around the pond.”

The signboard in Tamil appealing to the park users not to sit on the grass land was put up for two reasons. “Firstly the grass land has to be maintained and if people keep sitting on it, the grass would only wither over a period of time. Secondly, the vast pond has not been fenced. So if people sit on its banks, it may not be a safe option. But who cares about these issues,” laments a park user, Vinod Kumar, who is a

resident of Panneer Nagar in Mogappair West.

Recently when this cor-respondent of Mogappair Mail visited the park, she found youngsters sitting in groups either on the grass lands or near the banks of the pond at different places in the park. “People appear to ignore their own personal safety for the sake of a few moments of pleasure that they get sitting next to the water body here. What if children accidentally trip and fall into the pond while standing or sitting on the grass land? This practice of violating rules must end

now,” said an elderly citizen, Swaminarayan, a visitor to the park and resident of an apartment in Mogappair West.

When asked about why they were sitting near the pond’s bank, a teenager, who refused to identify himself, quipped, “everything for ‘jolly’ only”.

Park users felt that there should be better monitoring of the park to dissuade peo-ple from sitting on the grass land. If necessary the Great-er Chennai Corporation should even penalise such violators to serve a deterrent, felt some park users.

now Breathalysers with camera

Drunken drivers will not be able to wriggle out by disputing breathalyser tests as the city police are all set to procure advanced equipment that will record alcohol content as well as capture the image of alleged offender with location and time.

The cops are buying more breathalysers with built-in cameras to aid its efforts to crack down on drunk driving. Following the nod from the state government, the City Police has called for supply of devices with customised specifica-tions. Officers pointed out that breathalysers with inbuilt cameras would help in cases of disputes when the cases reach the courts.

At present it is learnt that drunk drivers are screened at about 150 locations across the city using nearly 300 breathalysers.

While the main roads in the neighbourhoods of Mogappair East and West have been dug up and re-laid shabbily at many plac-es causing hassle to motor-ists, the Greater Chennai Corporation has quietly gone ahead and re-laid roads in interior lanes at several locations over the past couple of weeks.

These new tar roads have made riding a smooth experience for motorists and local residents who take the bylanes to travel.

“We were pleasantly surprised to a see a civil engineering contractor ar-rive at our street and en-gage workers to lay new tar roads last week. The road roller, concrete mixer ve-hicle and blue metal were used round the clock to lay the fresh black-topped road,” said Vinayagam, a resident of Pari Road (not to be confused with the Pari Salai, a bus route road) in Mogappair East that branches off from the main road.

Residents said they were

surprised at the develop-ment as they were of the belief that the Greater Chennai Corporation would pay attention to streets that are off the main road only after relaying bus route roads that have been

dug up for underground sewerage pipeline laying works. “We thought our street will never get a new black topped road until the Valayapathi Salai got a tar road. But we were proved wrong as workers laid a

Perumal Koil in Mogappair was killed on Thursday when the ceiling collapsed.

She, however, managed to save her eight-month-old granddaughter, who was asleep on her lap.

The incident occurred at 2.30 p.m. when the deceased, identified as Lakshmi, was stringing flowers. Her family had been living on the first floor of the building on Karnan Street for the last 15 years.

She was sitting on the balcony with her granddaughter Rakshna. Her husband Natrajan was sitting beside them. Suddenly, the ceiling started cracking. Lakshmi noticed it and bent forward to shield the child.

A portion of concrete fell on her and her husband. Neighbours and passers-by rushed them to the Kil-paul Hospital but Lakshmi was de-clared brought dead. Her grand-daughter was rescued and is safe.

Two youth passing by were also injured.

“The fresh black top-ping coat has been given on the existing road. This is against rules. Norms man-date that the existing roads must be paved and the new road must be laid. Other-wise, the height of the road increases due to which the surface level of our homes go below the road level making our homes prone to flooding during mon-soon season,” said Sibu Mathew, a resident of Mogappair East.

After introducing cash-less traffic fine collection, the response to the new

system is encouraging and it has picked up pace.

Chennai city traffic po-

lice went cashless while collecting spot fines for various traffic offences in the city from May 10 on-wards. It allowed payment of fine using credit card or debit card against the e-challan issued or using other online methods in-cluding SBI website.

As many as 300 swiping machines and e-challan machines were used by the traffic police at various points in the city to collect fine. The decision to make traffic police’s financial transaction on the digital platform was taken be-cause there were allega-tions that policemen were demanding bribe.

Monitor refund statusof rail tickets

Rail passengers can now monitor the refund status of their cancelled tickets in real-time by log-ging on to a website launched by the Railways Ministry recently. The website 'refund.indianrail.gov.in' only requires the Passenger Name Record (PNR) numbers of travel-lers to reflect their refund status.

The website has been developed by the Centre For Railway Information Systems (CRIS) the system will specially help those passengers who are forced to submit claims through Ticket Deposit Receipts (TDRs) at ticket counters as they are unable to know their tickets' refund status at any other point.

As of now, only those passengers who book their

tickets through IRCTC website get e-mails and SMSs to acknowledge the processing of their can-celled tickets and refund status. Railway tickets can be cancelled across ticket counters, IRCTC website and through railway en-quiry number 139.

On cancelling the tick-ets online, the refund amount admissible is cred-ited to the passenger's bank account within a duration of five days. In case, the tickets are cancelled across the counter, the refund amount is paid within seven days.
