Where Escalators

Work at Will

By Our Correspondent

Barely four years after it was inaugurated with much fanfare and para-

phernalia the escalators at the Anna Nagar West Foot Over Bridge are not being maintained properly causing much discom-fort to pedestrians using them to cross the road.

The modern foot over bridge located close to the Anna Nagar West Bus De-pot of the Metro-politan Transport Corporation (MTC) and near the SBOA School on the Jawaharlal Nehru Salai was touted as the first of its kind pedestrian utility service with escalators in the entire city of Chennai. All other foot over bridges constructed in the city before this did not have escala-tors and people had to manually climb the flight of stairs to cross roads. “In fact, the other foot over bridges in the city were not popular as people did not like to climb the flight of stairs. Instead they chose to risk their lives and limbs by crossing the road brav-

ing the heavy flow of vehicular traffic. Therefore, this foot over bridge in Anna Nagar West was meant to encourage pedestrians to avoid crossing the road and instead use escalators for a fine experience,” explained Jayan-than, a resident of Anna Nagar West. “However, on many oc-casions we find that the escalator is not working and there is no operator to attend on it on a regular basis. Due to this pedes-trians are being inconve-nienced,” he complained.

Elderly citizens especially are put to hardship when the escala-tors stop working. “Ideally for

all foot over bridges where escalator fa-cility is available, an operator must be posted at both ends round the clock to attend to any techni-cal fault or emer-gency just in case someone trips. How-

ever, here I don’t find the opera-tor at all times. He is there only some time,” alleged Vignesh-waran. “There have been occa-sions when the escalator stops suddenly and people have to climb down. I think better main-tenance will help to ensure that this facility is not wasted,” he added.

Consequently some people are taking to crossing the road ignoring the traffic. Attempt to meet officials concerned for a reaction to the allegations lev-elled by pedestrians failed.

Dumping of debris and discarding of used house-hold goods is continuing unabated along the banks of the Cooum River near Rail Nagar Bridge close to Padikuppam as work on construction of a reten-tion wall has been sus-pended. Local residents are upset over the dump-ing of debris and waste as

the monsoon season has arrived and it would turn into potential sites for breeding of swarms of mosquitoes.

Mogappair Mail had highlighted the problem of dumping of debris at this site previously as well. However, some months ago residents living in the vicinity were excited as a civil contractor had un-dertaken works for con-

struction of a retention wall along the banks of the Cooum River at the point where the Padikup-pam Road turns and joins the Rail Nagar Bridge. As part of this exercise, the workers engaged by the contractor had raised pil-lars with beams along the Cooum River bank.

“In fact, when work on constructing the pillars had begun dumping of

debris at this site was also suspended and we were all extremely happy about it. However, for some reason the work has been suspended for sometime now and there is no sign of the contractor resum-ing the work on construct-ing the retention wall immediately,” pointed out Annie, a resident of an apartment closely located near the Rail Nagar Bridge.

She complained that ever since the work on construction of the infra-structure facility was abandoned, the dumping of debris has resumed. “You can even see that condemned cars have been abandoned at the site. Old furniture and mattresses have also been dumped now. With the rainy season already

around, the mattresses would absorb water and let out a pungent smell besides leading to heavy breeding of mosquitoes,” she lamented.

Residents said that had the retention wall been constructed people would not have been able to dump debris. “Right now they are discarding all these debris only because there is no retention wall and it is easy to leave them by the side of the river bank. Actually, the gov-ernment had warned that those dumping debris would be fined. But we have not come across any such case in our area till now,” said Mini Narayan. She urged that the work on the retention wall should immediately re-sume and be completed at the earliest.

‘There have been occasions when

the escalator stops suddenly and people have to climb down.’

It has been a good year for Savitha, who had earlier won the U-11 National girls crown and U–12 Common-wealth girls title. Savitha Shri’s father Baskar, who worked as an electrician in Singapore gave up his job to be with his daughter. Coming under the tutelage of Ra-mesh, who is one of the top coaches in India, has helped the youngster without a doubt. Working under such a strong coach helps one to improve understanding of the game and tactical skills.

The game of chess has benefited a lot, thanks to the patronage of Velammal, who continue to produce chess champions. Baskaran Ad-hiban, S P Sethuraman, Karthikeyan Murali, R Prag-gnanandhaa, R Vaishali and Rakshitta Ravi are some of the players who have brought laurels to the school.

Co m m u t e r s o f Chennai Metro Rail at the stations

located in the Anna Nagar neighbourhood are excited over a recent decision of the authorities to offer them last mile connectivity rides on share auto rick-shaws for as low as five rupees and an even com-fortable air-conditioned

taxi travel for a starting fare of just 10 rupees.

Previously commuters arriving at the Anna Nagar Metro Rail stations had to pay Rs 10 as minimum fare for a share auto rickshaw ride or Rs 15 for a taxi ride to their respective nearby destinations. This price has been drastically reduced by the authorities to encour-age more people to take the Chennai Metro Rail

services to travel to differ-ent parts from and to Anna Nagar.

“I just couldn’t believe my ears when the share auto rickshaw driver asked me to pay a mere five ru-pees to pick me up at the Thirumangalam Metro Rail Station and drop me off at the 11th Main Road bus stop. I had to pinch myself to believe that it was true. Only later I learnt

Rs 5 Share Auto Excites Metro Rail Commuters

that the authorities have slashed the minimum fare for the benefit of commut-ers of the Metro Rail,” said Yasmin, who regularly takes a Metro Rail ride from her home on Jawaha-rlal Nehru Salai to the Thirumangalam Metro Station.

Commuters and offi-cials feel that the reduced fares for last mile connec-tivity could actually trigger more people to take the Metro Rail. “The Thiru-mangalam Metro Rail station had one of the best patronages for share auto rickshaws among commut-ers who arrived at the sta-tion. Ever since the share auto rickshaw pick up fa-cility was extended at dif-ferent Metro Rail station 4,000-odd passengers had used it at Thirumangalam,

one of the highest after Guindy Metro station. Now with the reduction in fares, we expect more number of commuters to use share auto rickshaws from our station to reach their nearby destinations,” explained an official of the Chennai Metro Rail Lim-ited (CMRL), who re-quested not to be quoted for this report.

The minimum fare in normal share auto rick-shaws plying on the Anna Nagar route these days is mostly Rs 15 whereas the fare for Metro Rail com-muters is only one-third of this amount. Likewise, taxi services have become cost-ly for non-Metro Rail pas-sengers but very cheap for those availing the cabs af-ter arriving at the Metro stations.

ised by Dignity foundation will be held at No. 132 Old No. 52A, AK Block, 7th Main Road, Anna Nagar (4 p.m to 6.00 p.m). Programme schedule is as follows: Nov 20: Talo on become a leader; Nov 21: Group discus-sion on Effects of Western Culture on Indian Youth.

In this contemporary world, things have become too complicated that every-one has reached the peak of depression. In the name of shaping of a child’s future in a prosperous way, they are on the relentless run of earn-ing money by becoming workaholics. But they are unaware of their terrible mistake of not giving love, care and affection that are children’s desperate need of moment. Blue Whale direct-ed by T Ranganathan is a film that gets beyond the game of showcasing how a present-day individual’s life are confined to hardest situ-ations of economics, politics and many other crisis.

“Blue Whale” is a social thriller that revolves around a young boy missing in his apartment after he starts playing this hazardous life-threatening game in the ab-sence of his parents. A lady Assistant Commissioner of Police takes up the mission of finding his whereabouts that is narrated with edge-seated moments, which is set in shorter time frame of few hours.

In the recent times, ac-tress Poorna has been sur-prising us often with phe-nomenally challenging roles. She will be seen as Assistant Commissioner of Police, who investigates the case of missing young kid (Kabish

Khanna). Birla Bose and Divya from Kerala are essay-ing the roles of the kid’s parents.

The technical crew com-prises of PC Shivan (Music), KK (Cinematography), Shanmugham Velusamy of ‘Joker’ fame (Editor) and NK Rahul (Art).

The shooting of this Blue Whale is too close on the heels of completion, where the post-production works are happening simultane-ously with plans going on full swing to release in Jan-Feb 2019.

The film is produced by D.Mathu P. Arumai Chan-dran with T Ranganathan helming this project.

Revision of property tax by the Ambat-tur Zone of the

Greater Chennai Corpora-tion has left a cross-section of residents of the neigh-bourhood in Mogappair bewildered.

As part of a city wide exercise, the Greater Chen-nai Corporation has asked residents to submit details of their properties online or in physical form based on self-assessment to en-able the civic agency to revise the property tax rates after many years. This was in variance from the functioning of the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion which previously would fix property tax slabs based on inspections and standard guidelines.

In the Mogappa i r neighbourhood, the prop-erty tax slabs were last revised when it came un-der the jurisdiction of the Ambattur Municipality. However, now the locality

falls under the Greater Chennai Corporation lim-its after its jurisdiction was massively expanded in the early part of this decade following a Government decision.

A cross-section of resi-dents, whose property tax slabs have been revised, is complaining that the job has not been profession-ally done by the civic agen-cy and that there are a lot of discrepancies in the manner in which property tax rates have been calcu-lated as well as variances between two houses – with similar built up area and land - located on the same street.

“I had submitted my self-assessment details to the Ambattur Zone of the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion. My house has been constructed on a plot mea-suring 1,200 square feet and has a built up area of 800 square feet. However, the property tax assess-ment demand notice, which I have received,

wrongly shows as if a building measuring 800 square feet has been con-structed on a 300 square feet plot. Due to this I have been levied a higher tax slab than what would be normally levied,” points out a house owner, re-questing anonymity, on Maraimalai Adigalar Street in Mogappair East. “I do not know how to get this rectified,” she says.

Likewise res idents point out that the property tax slabs have been fixed on certain wrong notions about a locality. “I live about one-and-a-half kilo-metres away from Collec-tor Nagar – at the begin-ning of Golden George Nagar – but the demand notice issued to me de-scribed my property loca-tion as being near the Madras Medical Mission Hospital. This is unfair as I stay in a residential area whereas Collector Nagar is a commercial hub and will have higher property tax rates,” said Arumuga-

Property Tax Calculation Leaves Residents Bewilderednathan, a resident.

A Greater Chennai Corporation official said people can submit requests

for revision of property tax and these would be exam-ined. “But we are short of manpower and can’t con-

duct extensive physical verification. It will be un-dertaken randomly,” he added.

Lack of hygiene among contact lens wearers may cause infection

Owing to poor hygiene, contact lens wearers in the UK are more at risk of developing a rare but preventable eye infection that can cause blindness, researchers have warned.

The team from the University College Lon-don (UCL) found that the risk of developing the disease -- Acanthamoeba keratitis -- was more than three times greater amongst people with poor contact lens hygiene, people who did

not always wash and dry their hands before handling their lenses.

Showering and face washing while wearing contact lenses are also likely to be risk factors.

The eye disease causes the front surface of the eye, the cornea, to become painful and inflamed, due to infection by Acanthamoeba -- a cyst-forming micro-organism, found more in the UK than in other countries.

The study showed a threefold increase in Acanthamoeba keratitis since 2011 in South-East England.

With the neighbour-hood massively expanding in the past decade and numbers of vehicles liter-

ally exploding, a cross-section of residents of Mogappair East is seeking installation of a traffic signal at the junction where the Pari Salai ends and

Church Road begins. The junction located a

stone’s throw away from the Metropolitan Trans-port Corporation’s (MTC) Mogappair East Bus Depot

opens up traffic on four lanes – on Pari Salai, on Church Road (left side), towards Mogappair village and School Road (right side). Residents and motor-ists say that during peak hours, especially evening time, the movement of vehicles is absolutely cha-otic at this junction leading to numerous traffic snarls on a daily basis.

“There was a time when there were hardly any movement of vehicles at this junction as there was not much of develop-ment in terms of real es-tate beyond the Mogap-pair East Bus Depot. How-ever, now both domestic and commercial buildings have mushroomed all over and people are increas-

ingly using two-wheelers and cars to commute in-stead of walking or cycling as the case was previous-ly,” recalled Ramamurthy, a retired government em-ployee and resident of School Road in Mogap-pair.

Vehicles now come from all four corners. “Traffic snarls here have become the order of the day. Increasingly we wit-ness frayed tempers with drivers of vehicles scream-ing and blaming each other for not giving way. There is no traffic police personnel to man the traffic leading to unpleasantness while driving,” says Manoj Anand, a resident of Mogappair East.

Often it is the local auto

rickshaw drivers who vol-untarily come to the rescue of motorists by regulating the traffic flow when there is heavy congestion.

“We volunteer because no vehicle can move an inch sometimes. But this can’t go on forever. It would be better if the Chennai City Traffic Po-lice post a personnel here permanently in the eve-nings or install an auto-mated traffic signal so that vehicle flow can be easily regulated,” says Logana-than, an auto rickshaw driver in the vicinity. Only then would the area stop witnessing angry screams of the motorists and it will be a smooth experience crossing the junction, he feels.
