A group of residents living in and around the neighbourhoods of Anna Nagar, Mogappair and Kilpauk has joined to-gether to motivate fellow residents to pledge to do-nate their eyes. To take forward the initiative to spread information on eye donation and get people to pledge to donate their eyes, these socially con-scious residents have formed a voluntary organ-isation called “Club of Humanity”. The members of this club visit family members of the bereaved and explain to them their cause and try and con-

vince them to donate the eyes of the deceased.

Mukesh Soni, one of the active members of the organisation says, “With-in four to six hours of the death of a person, the

cornea should be taken out and saved clinically to give vision to others.”

Soni, Rajiv Menon, Ar un Kumar and M Jeyaraman are the found-ers of the c lub who

launched the campaign as they felt that the aware-ness on eye donation is not sufficient in India and still people have taboo as-sociated with it.

“It is not that easy to go

and meet the relatives of the just bereaved person to convince them to donate the eyes of their departed loved ones. Nonetheless, we meet them anticipating good things to happen in the lives of others. We donate those eyes to Ra-jan Eye bank and it reach-es the needy. The eye bank sends van to their resi-dences to collect the eyes,” explains Soni.

The members of the club also distribute pam-phlets and send messages on WhatsApp to many in the neighbourhood and have been successful in harvesting more than 25 pairs of eyes so far. “If we come to know of any

death we will be ready to meet their families with a purpose and we also send our volunteers to create awareness in neighbour-hood. Sometimes, the deceased would have giv-en consent for donating eyes during his lifetime, but family members may not be willing to donate. They have lots of myths associated with eye dona-tion. We meticulously educate them,” he said.

All the volunteers meet every third Sunday in Mogappair to discuss the challenges they face.

More than two months after the Greater Chen-nai Corporation warned of imposing hefty fines in-cluding a possible jail term for damaging roadside trees, spotting advertise-ment boards nailed on to tree barks and branches is common in the neighbour-hoods of Mogappair East and West, Nolambur and Anna Nagar.

In September this year, G Prakash, the Commis-sioner of the Greater Chen-nai Corporation, has warned that anyone caus-ing external damage to trees by way of drilling a nail to hold advertisement boards, tying barbed wires and covering them with serial lights at night will be

fined. He had then given a deadline of 10 days for those who had put up such commercial boards and

serial lights to remove them from the trees failing which they shall face action. “Failure to do so would attract action against the individual or establishment concerned under Section 326 (1) of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) Act of 1919,” he warned. The provision entailed imposition of pen-alty of up to Rs 25,000 against the violators and even a jail term that could extend up to three years.

The idea behind the campaign to remove the nails from the trees was to improve the “health” of the trees. The nails weaken the tree barks and over a period of time reduces their “life span”. There have been cases where hundreds of nails had been driven into trees leading to

their “death”.However, going around

the neighbourhood one can find dozens of com-mercial boards still nailed to roadside trees indicating that nothing much has hap-pened beyond the issuance of a warning by the Com-missioner of Greater Chennai Corporation. While some violators are unaware of the warning, others simply don’t care.

“I am not aware that nailing a board on a tree is an offence. Being a small businessman, I can’t spend money for publ ic i ty through other means. Therefore I used the tree to put up my shop board name. I will remove it soon,” said the owner of a car driving school in Mogappair.

Environmentalists said that removing the nails and “healing” the tree back is a long process. Usually tur-meric and clay is used to fill the holes after the nails are removed. The public can call the Greater Chennai Corporation helpline num-ber 1913 to lodge com-plaints about illegal adver-tisements on trees.

electric autorickshaw launched

Chennai launched the country’s first retrofitted electric autorickshaw as part of a project to intro-duce 100 electric autorick-shaws in the city.

The electric autorick-shaw could run for a max-imum distance of 100 km in full charge and it could reach top speed of 60 km per hour. The cost of retro-fitting a petrol-driven au-torickshaw would be Rs 1.2 to Rs 1.5 lakh and vehicles manufactured after 2000 could be retrofitted. The

company plans to set up a charging station each in all the 15 zones of the city Corporation as well. There is a plan to introduce 4,000 electric rickshaws in the city, and it would be most-ly driven by female and transwomen chauffeurs. The electric autorickshaws will have various facilities including CCTV surveil-lance, GPS, panic button and tab. These could be booked using ‘M Auto Pride’ mobile app.

‘Sewage line on call’ scheme

The state govern-ment on Friday an-nounced two new schemes in a bid to in-crease the number of domestic sewage con-nections which will come into effect from Dec 2. According to the schemes residents can use Azhaithaal Inaippu (Call for con-nection) scheme to get sewage connection by calling Metro water. As p e r ‘ I l l a m t h o r u m Inaippu’ (connections in every house scheme, the water manager will provide sewage con-nection without col-lecting charges. After the connections are set, resident can pay the amount.

Seminar onEffective communication

Velammal Bodhi academy makes a mark

Director Gireesaaya’s Adithya Varma, which marks the debut of actor Vikram’s son, Dhruv Vi-kram, as a hero in Tamil cinema, has received a heartwarming and tremen-dous response from audi-ences. The film, which re-leased on November 22, took a grand opening and is running to full houses across the state.

Dhruv Vikram’s perfor-mance in the film has not only won the hearts of audiences but also that of the critics. His performance has come in for praise from various quarters. In a bid to express their gratitude to both fans and the media for their support to the film, the team of Adithya Varma organised a press confer-ence last Sunday.

Participating in the meet and greet event, cinema-tographer-cum-actor Dha-nush, who played one of Dhruv’s friends in the film, said, “When I saw this film in Telugu, I was so im-pressed by it. I too wanted

to work in an emotional film like this. When I got an opportunity to work in this film, I was excited. I am a cinematographer. But suddenly Vikram sir one day said, “You do this role. On my first day, I couldn’t even walk straight. But then, slowly, I began to learn and do well.”

Dhanush, while heap-ing praises on actor Dhruv, said, “Initially, I didn’t ex-pect much from Dhruv because he too is debuting with this film. But when I saw him act in the drug scene, I was overwhelmed. I realised that this guy was a real talent and it is not without reason that they were rating him high.”

Speaking on the occa-sion, music director Rad-han said, “Thanks to my mom. She is the reason for all the stages that I am on today. I am basically a sound engineer.

was because of Vikram sir that we are here today. More than us, it was Vi-kram sir who worked on this film. Gireesaaya is one of the most patient direc-tors. He is someone who encouraged me. Actor Anbu, who spoke next on the occasion, said, “This is a dream come true. This film has helped me move to a strong position. I wish to thank the entire team. I only had one thing in mind when starting this film. I knew this role had a freshness and I was intent on not spoiling it. Think, I have done justice to my role.”

The co-director of the film, Shaurya, while speak-ing on the occasion, said,

“I thank Gireesaaya. Both of us have journeyed to-gether for almost five years before this film and I want-ed to see him as a director. I am very happy for him.”

Actor Dhruv began his speech on a light note. He said, “These days, nobody tells me that there is a press meet. They knock on my door and ask me to accom-pany them. Later, they re-veal to me that I have to meet the press.”

“The strongest asset of this film is Anbudasan. Everybody in my family says, ‘Dhruv you have acted well but this movie is nothing without Anbu-dasan.’ The chemistry be-tween us is not because we are good actors but because we are good friends,” Dhruv said about actor Anbu, who had played his friend in the film.

Talking about his father, Vikram, Dhruv said, “When I see the film I don’t see myself. I see my dad. Whatever is good, my dad has made me do and

those scenes that aren’t great have been done by me. I love my father and cinema. I will not take the credit for the success of this film. It goes to all of these people. My dad is the best actor according to me but he is an even better father. My dad has been giving his body and soul for this film. For the last 10 months, he has not been working on his films to help me. Had he got a project like this when he was 22, he would have been at a different level altogether.”

Distributor Shakthivel of Shakthi Film Factory, said,”The waiting time for Adithya Varma was long. I loved Arjun Reddy. That was how, I got into Adithya Varma. After this film, we now have Dhruv, a hero who is in his 20s and who can be cast in a big budget film. Producer Mukesh sir enjoyed making this movie. Very happy to have been a part of this film.”

More the time spent on the mobile phone and com-puter screen, more it leads to a rise in anxiety symp-toms among adolescents, says a new study.

However, the study, published in a Journal of Psychiatry, has kept video games out of the list, re-vealing that television viewing, computer use and not video game playing, is

linked to an increase in anxiety symptoms.

The study demonstrated that if a teen experienced an increase in his social media use, television view-ing and computer use in a given year, which sur-passed their overall average level of use, then his or her anxiety symptoms also in-creased in that same year.

Furthermore, when ad-

olescents decreased their social media use, television viewing, and computer use, their symptoms of anxiety became less severe. Thus, no lasting effects were found.

Thus, it appears that computer use is uniquely associated to increase in anxiety, potentially in rela-tion to using the computer for homework activities,

but this needs further re-search, explained the study.

This study could also have important implica-tions for how youth and families choose to regulate digital screen time in order to prevent and reduce symptoms of anxiety.

Researchers followed almost 4,000 Canadian teenagers from age 12 to 16 who were part of the Co-

Each year of high school, teens were asked to self-report time spent in front of digital screens and specified amount of time spent en-gaging in four different types of screen time activi-ties — social media, televi-sion, video gaming and computer use.

The teenagers complet-ed self-reported question-naires on various anxiety symptoms at ages 12 to 16. Then, after data collection, state-of-the-art statistical analyses were performed to

assess the between-person, with-person, and lagged-within person associations between screen time and anxiety in adolescence.

These findings suggest that one way to help teens manage anxiety could be to help them limit the amount of time they spend in front screens. Agencies

Finally the concept of painting common walls is catching up in the neigh-bourhoods of Anna Nagar and Mogappair, much like the transition that hap-pened in posher neighbour-hoods in South Chennai such as Besant Nagar, Adyar and Mylapore.

On the Thirumangalam-Mogappair Road one can now come across two com-mon walls that have been colourfully painted with messages aimed at creating social awareness among the public. The walls that were raised some months ago on either sides of the culvert of the flood carrier channel near the Park Road-Padikuppam Main Road junction, now have beautiful paintings raising awareness on environment.

On this stretch in the neighbourhood this is seen as the first such initiative to

make a common wall at-tractive and colourful. Pre-viously, as reported in Mogappair Mail on separate occasions, two pillars of the Thirumangalam fly-over on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai (also known as 100 Feet Road in popular par-lance) were painted with social messages.

“This is an extremely welcome development. Earlier I used to wonder why in our neighbourhood alone we do not have the concept of making better use of available common walls unlike in other areas of south Chennai. Now I am happy to see that on either side of the Thiru-mangalam-Mogappair Road, the walls of the floor carrier channel culvert carry socially relevant mes-sage and they are also co-lourful,” said Sangeetha Muthu, a resident of Gold-en Flats in Mogappair.

py for a different reason. “The messages painted on these walls talk about the need to conserve water, save earth as well as about the process of segregating different types of wastes ranging from paper, plastic, glass and organic wastes. Since this is a road taken by many school students on a daily basis, the paint-ings would send across a powerful social message to the young minds more ef-fectively than what is mere-ly taught in classrooms,” felt Nelson, a father of two school going children.

Socially conscious resi-dents like Jawahar Nesan said that such paintings served another valuable purpose. “By painting common walls, we can ensure that they are not defaced by cinema or po-litical posters, which serve no purpose at all. Social messages are what is re-quired now,” he said.
