Horticulture Department to sell X’mas trees in neighbourhood

Christmas is around the corner and the festive cel-ebrations would be incom-plete without the Xmas trees. For those living in the neighbourhoods of Anna Nagar and Mogappair get-ting a Christmas tree at an affordable price would not be difficult this festive sea-son as the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department Agency itself is selling them at two easily accessi-ble locations.

The Tamil Nadu Horti-culture Department Agen-cy, which is a wing of the Directorate of Horticulture and Plantation Crops func-tioning under the State Gov-ernment’s Horticulture De-partment is selling Christ-mas trees. “A tree measur-ing 1.5 feet to 2 feet in height is priced at only Rs 110, which is extremely afford-able. We are also selling Hortbeat brand of choco-lates – dark, milk and dry fruit varieties - that are man-ufactured at our Depart-

ment’s Madhavaram unit. These are priced at just Rs 40 per 40 gram pack,” said an official of the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Depart-ment Agency. Those living in Thirumangalam, Mogap-pair and Nolambur could head to the agency’s outlet located at No 25 on Anna Arch Road in NSK Nagar to buy the Christmas trees and chocolates. Likewise, residents living in Anna Nagar West and beyond could buy the festive requirements from the agen-cy’s outlet on Madhavaram Milk Colony Road in Arul Nagar in Madhavaram. The other venue, which is a bit far off, where these items are sold is at the Semmozhi Poonga on Ca-thedral Road near Gemini flyover.

“These centres will func-tion from 10 am to 5.45 pm daily including on Saturday and Sunday till the end of the festive season. We start-ed the sale on December 16,” he added.

I only wish that they should hold similar sales at more places in the neighbour-hood, may be outside super-markets,” suggested Sahaya Mary Teresa, a resident of Mogappair West.

Pulse polio Immunization camp on Jan 19

The state govern-ment will hold the an-nual pulse polio im-munisation camp for more than 71 lakh chil-dren on January 19, as part of a nationwide campaign. Mass vacci-nation drives will be held in just one phase and the next seven days will be for mop-up, said d i rec tor o f pub l i c health.

In 2020, when Tamil Nadu will step into the 16th polio-free year, the state will conduct inten-sive campaigns at more than 50,000 booths that

will be set up at primary health centres, govern-ment hospitals, state-medical college hospi-tals, ICDS centres, noon-meal centres and schools. The state will have transit booths and mobile teams to cover children who are travel-ling and those living in inaccessible areas.

Mark Fernandez, the leader of Lukeharmonix has been with the choir for close to 25 years and has been leading them for the last 12 years. He is classi-cally trained in practical piano certified by the Trin-ity College of London apart from which he is also a self taught guitarist and drummer. He is also a pas-sionate composer and has composed many songs that are being sung in the Sunday masses across Anna Nagar and Mogap-pair churches.

He initially began his music interest in Rock and has been a bass gui-tarist for a few bands. Following his college days he decided to dedi-cate his talent only for the Lord and has been into Gospel music since then.

He is soon to release his own You Tube channel.

Commenting on the win, Mark Fernandez, Choir Leader - Lukehar-monix said, “I think what really went a long way for us is that we enjoyed every practice. We also ensured every singer was given the opportunity to put forth their ideas, so that we could innovate and ex-periment more, thus giving our best performance. Lukeharmonix, the English choir of St. Luke’s Church, Anna Nagar won the prestigious Choir of the Year 2019 Award at Carol Fest, a mega city-level carol contest conducted by YMCA Madras on Dec14. The winning team was award-ed a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- along with a trophy. The event was judged by renowned music evangelists like Mr. Clement Vedanayagam Sastriyar, Rev. Fr. Foot over bridge remains a pipedream hereBy N Rathi Chithra

Nearly one-and-a-half years after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced in the State Legislative As-sembly that a second foot overbridge would be con-structed in Anna Nagar, the project remains a pipe-dream hassling hundreds of pedestrians in the local-ity. Presently, Anna Nagar has just one foot overbridge near the Anna Nagar West Depot largely for the ben-efit of the students of the SBIOA schools.

The foot overbridge, an-nounced by the Chief Min-ister, was to come up on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai (also known popularly as 100 Feet Road) at Thiru-mangalam near the Kend-riya Vidyalaya Anna Nagar School which is located inside the Central Public Wo r k s D e p a r t m e n t (CPWD) Quarters. How-ever, nothing much has proceeded on the ground and hundreds of students continue to struggle to cross the road at this junc-tion. There is also no zebra crossing at it is a highway.

This forces students to walk a long distance before they could find an opening to cross the road and reach their school. Incidentally in June this year, the Madras High Court was seized of their troubles as a public spirited person had filed a petition seeking at least a provision of a ‘U’ Turn near the school so that people living in CPWD Quarters and the students could find it easy to access their premises. Subse-quently the authorities

concerned had informed the court that it would take up to a year to construct the foot overbridge with an escalator. The court had then asked the authorities to create a pedestrian cross-ing at the location on the high traffic density road so that students could safely cross the road. However, it is learnt that only now the authorities are considering installing a signal at the location after creating an opening in the median for the students to cross.

For Aditya, any role is fine so long he gets the space to do justice to the character. “My comedy in Market Raja...won the appre-ciation lines in a movie designed for a mass audience. Comedy was a great diversion, and I enjoyed every moment of the shoot. There are some offers but I would be happy not to do movies in a set pattern. Creativity goes for a toss for an actor who looks for that little varia-tion in each role.”

“Aware that comedy is always a dicey and serious business, it was a welcome change for me to test the new waters. As a sidekick to the lead man, I had a limited footage but gratifying to find the media appreciation. As an actor, it was some experience to share screen space with the legend Radhika and happy to share a few inputs with her. With Saran at the helm, the camaraderie at the sets was a keepsake experi-ence, in a plot which gave huge avenues to play it at one’s strength. Saran was open to ideas and improvisation when the camera rolled.”

Rewinding his theatre days, Aditya said he was no stranger to comedy, having had a lion share of the comedy roles with fellow actors. Doing the act in a movie is altogether a differ-ent thing as I realised the hard way. For an actor to get his accent right, he had to do a bit of homework on the local flavour and the in-tensity of the character.” Presently, Aditya is part of Mysskin’s Thupparivalan 2, a project which has recently taken off in London.

Deworming pills to all in tamil nadu

In its fight against anaemia, the state public health department has planned to distribute deworming tablets to everyone in Tamil Nadu, instead of just children, twice every year for at least five years from February 2020.

More than half the pregnant women and adolescent girls in the state suffer from anae-mia, a condition in which a person has an insuf-ficient number of red blood cells or quantity of haemoglobin that reduces the capacity of the blood to carry oxygen.

Public health experts say the drug will rid one’s body of parasitic worms and deworming all the eight crore people in the state will bring down soil-transmitted helminth infections caused by parasites such as roundworm, hook-worm and whipworm. These infections impair the nutritional status of the infected people as worms feed on host tissues, mostly blood, caus-ing iron and protein loss.

Residents and motorists are complaining that some unruly elements are con-suming liquor publicly and discarding the empty alco-hol bottles in the open on Church Road in Mogap-pair East. At the beginning of the Church Road while coming from the Madura-voyal New Bridge end – close to the junction of Gangaiamman Koil Road – one can spot empty li-quor bottles on the corner of the street. Local people complained that at night some anti-socials consume liquor using the parked mini-vans and lorries as cover and throw the bottles on the road. “Since the area is dark after evening hours, it becomes easy for these persons to consume liquor here. We don’t wish to pick up a quarrel with them so we just let it be,” said a middle-aged resi-

dent of an apartment on Church Road.

The Church Road is a major road that connects the Maduravoyal-Koy-ambedu road with Mogap-pair East. “Since the Rail Nagar Bridge road is in a shambles and cars can’t enter via the Golden George Nagar Bridge, the Maduravoyal New Bridge has become a major con-nector for people who come from Koyambedu to enter the Mogappair neigh-bourhood. Most of these vehicles then take the Church Road to proceed to

many parts of Mogappair East. Therefore, this is a very busy road with high traffic. You can see vehicles moving here even late at night. Hence some policing to prevent consumption of liquor in the open will be of much help,” the resident added. Many women also ride back home after work on two-wheelers using the Church Road. If there are intoxicated men around, it could pose a serious threat to their safety, feel motor-ists. “Crimes against wom-en are increasing and when men consume liquor and

get on a high on a public road, it certainly becomes a menace,” a motorist said.

Also the road is used by many school children. There are two schools in close vicinity of the Church Road. “What sort of lesson will these school going kids get when they get to see empty liquor bottles on a daily basis on the road? It will certainly send out a wrong message to them that drinking is fine. So the police must crackdown on this,” he said.
