In future it will be easier for the residents to contact the officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation, as the civic body has decided to pro-vide contact details, in-cluding phone numbers, of its officials across all the ranks through Nam-ma Chennai App, a smart-phone app l i ca t ion launched under the Smart City Mission.
The details of city Corporation officials, including conservancy workers, conservancy supervisors, assistant executive engineers, zonal officials and oth-ers, will be made avail-able to residents through the Namma Chennai App.
Previously, the members of the public could access the contact details of the field level officials only through the Corporation offices at the ward and zonal levels. On the other hand, the contact numbers of department heads seat-ed in its headquarters and also zonal officers are avail-able on the official website
of the Chennai Corpora-tion. If the contact details of officials are available in the public domain, it will encourage more residents to lodge complaints and get the problems solved at the
local level itself. The deci-sion will also ensure more public participation.
This move has found support not just among the residents, but Corporation officials, too.

Owners of three apart-ment units in a flat on Fifth Avenue in Anna Nagar who were left in the lurch after a builder who acquired the property for redevelopment failed to constr uct apar tment dwellings as promised have finally got relief from the Tamil Nadu Real Es-tate Regulatory Authority (TNRERA). In an order passed earlier this month, the TNRERA Chairman K Gnanadesikan (who is a resident of Officers Col-ony near Mogappair) and two Members Manohar and Jeyakumar, directed the developer to pay rental dues to the owners and complete the building project as agreed.
The order is significant and would help many flat owners in and around Anna Nagar. In the instant case, the apartment own-ers Sarojam Gopinathan and Col. Sanath Gopinath (joint owners), V S Sriku-mar and R Chitra had entered into a joint ven-ture agreement with a private real estate devel-oper Green Avenue Homes and Gardens, to demolish the flats on Fifth Avenue and build eight
new apartments in 2012. There were three other apartment owners in the flats including the devel-oper. As per the agree-ment, the developer, who demolished the building, had promised to deliver six apartments to the resi-dents and agreed that in the interim they would be paid a monthly rent as well. However, the devel-oper did not deliver on his promise and also stopped paying the monthly rent to the displaced apartment owners for over five years.
The three owners, who moved a petition before the TNRERA, submitted that though the building was demolished in 2012 and the completed apart-ments were supposed to be delivered by January 2015, nothing had progressed. The developer had merely constructed the stilt and the roof for the car park-ing. He stopped paying rent after April 2014.
Coming to their rescue, the TNRERA directed Green Avenue Homes and Gardens to pay the rental arrears to the complain-ants and said the latter were at liberty to seek ap-propriate remedy against the builder through the civic court as well.

In view of the rise in fever and dengue cases in the city, the state health department from Thurs-day stationed vehicles carrying 1,000 litres each of ready-to-drink nila-vembu kudineer, a herbal concoction that helps build immunity, across the 15 corporation zones.
Siddha texts say 4 grams of nilavembu ku-dineer powder is to be mixed in 400 ml of water and boiled till it reduces to about 100 ml. The liquid
should then be filtered and had within three hours. The health department has decided to make it easier for Chennaiites by supplying the ready-to-drink dose, which has to be taken once a day for three days to be effective. The vehicles will be avail-able in the same location for a week. Nilavembu kudineer is also available in government hospitals and is sold over the coun-ter in retail outlets and pharmacies.

A section of the ser-vice road beneath the Thiruman-
galam flyover is in a bat-tered condition causing inconvenience to hundreds of motorists on a daily basis. The service road that branches off to the 100 Feet Road (Jawaharlal Ne-hru Salai) towards Koy-ambedu from the junction of the Mogappair-Thiru-
mangalam Road was dug up some months ago by contractors engaged by the Chennai Metropolitan Wa-ter Supply and Sewerage Board (Metrowater in com-mon parlance) to lay giant underground pipelines. Consequently traffic was blocked on the service road near the Thirumangalam flyover and instead divert-ed.
A fortnight ago all civic works were completed and
vehicular traff ic was opened up on this stretch of the service road. Follow-ing this all vehicles includ-ing buses operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) head-ed towards Thiruman-galam Metro Rail Station as well as Koyambedu be-gan plying through the service road.
However, motorists are pointing out that the con-tractor who dug up the

road or the Department concerned for maintaining roads in this locality have not bothered to re-lay the road using tar and bitu-men. Instead the dug up portion of the road has been merely covered with earth in a haphazard man-ner leaving it battered. Due to this motorists are trying to avoid the battered areas and instead are driving on the extreme right of the road just besides the flyover wall.
“In fact, you can see that all the vehicles includ-ing two-wheelers, cars and heavy vehicles likes buses and tanker lorries are now keeping largely to the ex-treme right of the service road. Very few people ride on the battered stretch and sometimes you can see pedestrians walking on the battered patch unmindful of the vehicles buzzing past them. What’s the use of opening the road for traffic when the available motorable space is limited and vehicle drivers are forced to drive only on a part of the road,” asked Vasudev, a resident of Thirumangalam.

"No Right Turn? Who said so?" Well this is what will strike one's mind when they come on the Shanthi Colony Road (Fourth Avenue Road) in Anna Nagar and take a turn towards 13th Main Road to reach the Second Avenue (Thirumangalam-Anna Nagar Roundtana).
Ahead of the turning towards the 13th Main Road, the Chennai Traffic Police has put up a sign-board on the median stat-ing that a right turn is now allowed at the spot. The signboard also has a stick-er in Tamil stating that it may not be possible to take a right turn and indi-cates that the same has been pasted by the Chen-nai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB or Me-trowater in popular us-
age). However, waiting at the spot one can see doz-ens of motorists including car and lorry drivers un-abashedly taking a right turn onto the 13th Main Road.
What's more? Vehicle users, who are sticklers for road rules and follow sign-boards of the Chennai Traffic Police without any violation, patiently take a 'U' Turn at the spot and to take a turn on 12th Main Road to reach Second Avenue Road.
So, it is a right turn al-lowed at the spot or not? Technically speaking go-ing by the signboard, put up by an agency that is responsible for regulating t raf f ic movement on roads, motorists cannot take a right turn. Violating any existing signboard is an offence and it would attract a penalty. Howev-er, if one were to go by

13th Main Road."I remember that this
signboard was put up by the Chennai Traffic Police a few months ago when contractors engaged by the Metrowater had dug up a portion of the road at the entry of the 13th Main Road for laying some un-derground pipelines. At that time, allowing vehi-cles to take a turn would have led to chaos on the road and hence this restric-tion came up. However, the contractor has since completed the work. And now there should not be any reason for motorists to avoid the right turn. Ide-ally the police should re-move the signboard," said an employee of the Nate-san Institute of Coopera-tive Management that is located nearby.
