A civic work on a road culvert is under way on Bharathi Salai about 100 metres away from the Nolambur Phase-II First Main Road. The civic work, however, has re-sulted in damaged and uneven road at the loca-tion making it difficult for vehicle drivers to ma-noeuvre the stretch. The ongoing work has also led to heavy dust pollution in the area.

The construction work on the civic project is go-ing on right on Bharathi Salai at the point where the road leads to Nolam-bur. Almost half the road is covered by the ongoing work. “The pucca road on this location has given way due to constant dig-ging and relaying works undertaking by labourers engaged by the contractor who has bagged the ten-der for this project. This is, of course, inevitable

whenever any civic work is executed and the peo-ple have to put up with it in the larger interest of development,” explains Ram Manohar, a resident of Nolambur Phase II First Main Road, who was on his morning walk when this correspondent visited the site of con-struction recently.

But motorists appear to be rather impatient about the ongoing work. “Such works should be executed with great speed so that the road users are not put to much hardship

during the course of the project. I am unable to ride my scooter on this s t r e t ch because the wheels are small and can-not withstand the jerks while moving on the loose gravel. It is very risky. At least the workers engaged in this project should clear the stretch of all the loose gravel so that two-wheelers don’t shake or vibrate much,” con-tends Prasanna, a resi-dent of Nolambur who uses this stretch on a regular basis to go to his workplace and back

home. Another section of

residents is willing to wait though. “Yes we are in-convenienced. No doubt about it. We can’t rush through to our office in the morning. Our journey is certainly slowed down at this location when we take our children to drop them off in the nearby private school. And we need to be extra cautious while traversing at this site. We do encounter dust pollution and dust settles all over our face and clothes while we pass by this place. But how can the workers execute the project without digging up the road? Therefore people must learn to be understanding a bit pa-tient. The authorities can nonetheless take steps to ensure that the work is completed speedily and the road is re-laid at the earliest,” says Aravindan, another resident of Nol-ambur.

After cancelling the Maths 2 exam due to question paper leak, Anna University has announced that re-exam for affiliated colleges will be conducted on December 12.

The Maths-2 arrear examination was con-ducted on December 3. Over 80,000 students ap-peared for the exam. But, during the exam, Anna University was alerted by anonymous students that the question paper for one

of the most difficult pa-pers in engineering stream was already leaked.

B.E/B.Tech students from all branches (except marine engineering) can appear for the exam. The hall tickets already sent for semester examinations may be used by the stu-dents,” said a press re-lease.

The university has con-ducted an in-house en-quiry about the question paper leak.

A storm water drain project is being executed on the School Road close to the SBOA School and Junior College in Anna Nagar West. A trench has been dug up on a portion of the road close to the school and beams have been put up.

The work had led to denial of easy access to a private bank, some houses and a few other commer-cial establishments due to breaking of the cement path connecting these premises with the road.

A cross-section of resi-dents and parents of school students com-plained that the ongoing the civic work had led to chaos on the roads, espe-cially during school open-ing and closing time.

“This is a highly busy road even otherwise. But with the school function-ing here thousands of students use this road on working days. And these days parents drop them off

in cars and two-wheelers. Apart from this, many school vans also ply on the stretch. So as it is the area is congested. Now that the road fringe has been dug up and iron barricades placed on the road to pre-vent people from acciden-tally tripping and falling into the trench, it has re-duced the road space on which pedestrians and vehicle drivers could nego-tiate,” pointed out Valar-mathi. Some of the par-ents and locals felt that the authorities concerned could have waited for an-other fortnight or so and undertaken the civic works when the school is closed for Christmas vacation. “You see, now parents rid-

ing scooters try to take a U-turn at the place where the barricades have been placed leading to utter chaos in the mornings and late afternoons,” said Ra-mamurthy, a vendor on School Road.

“Had the authorities waited and executed the work during the Christ-mas vacation there would have been lesser problem for motorists. The number of vehicles on the road at that point would have been lesser compared to what it is during the school working day. We need good planners to foresee such chaos and act accordingly,” said H Joe Williams, a resident of Anna Nagar West.

Auditorium at Anna Library re-opened

Three years after it was shut down, a spa-cious auditorium at the Anna Centenary Li-brary in Kotturpuram reopened for public use. The facility can be used to host events con-nected with art, culture and education. It will not be let out for marriage, political and reli-gious events.

The hall has a capac-ity to accommodate 1,280 people. A rent of Rs 2,31,224 excluding taxes has been fixed for a day. Though corporate meetings are permitted, parties and cooking are not allowed. Food pre-pared from outside can be served.

It is a sight that would put off anyone and yet the authorities that be

appear to not even bat an eyelid over it. Right along the Thir umangalam-Mogappair Road, which among the busiest main roads in the entire Anna Nagar and Mogappair neighbourhood, one can spot a huge mound of sludge placed along the banks of the Otteri Nullah, after the Padikuppam Road Junction.

The Otteri Nullah is a minor waterway that links floodwater to the Bucking-ham Canal and runs across 12 kilometres including via Anna Nagar, Park Road and Padikuppam Canal. Recently authorities had undertaking desilting op-eration in the Otteri Nul-lah near the Padikuppam Canal.

"After desilting canal, the workers engaged by the contractor commissioned to undertake the major

civic work, had simply left the mound of sludge right on the roadside along the canal’s entrance from Pa-dikuppam Road Junction. Anyone passing by this road would not fail to no-tice this civic disgrace," says Lakshmi.

"With an outbreak of dengue in the entire state, it is quite scary to see mos-quitoes breeding right here in the heart of our neigh-bourhood. The Greater Chennai Corporation of-ficials are checking house-holds to see if garbage is being disposed off prop-erly and if there are any mosquito breeding points.

I think they should first inspect this site and then go about advising residents about cleanliness and san-itation," says Sampath, a pedestrian and a resident of Padi Pudunagar.

What’s more? Well, many eateries operated out of makeshift stalls, tricy-cles and pushcarts are functioning in close prox-imity of the mound of sludge raising serious con-cerns about health safety and hygiene. "Lots of people make a beeline to these food stalls and eat here oblivious to the stink raised by the dumping of the slush. But they are compromising on health safety. It will be better if the authorities concerned act quickly and remove the sludge from the spot," says Govindan.
