A beautiful terrace garden with full of organic veggies and greens wel-comes visitors atop the building of

Vasantham, a school for special children on Electricity Board Road in Mogappair East. The plants, pleasing to the eyes, have been nurtured and maintained with love by the inmates of the institution.

What’s even more amazing is the ex-treme levels of involvement, commitment and excitement of these children in main-taining such a big garden which accom-modates more than 150 varieties of plants and creepers. While watering the plants Anitha, a special child, told Mogappair Mail that she likes roses a lot and Seena who has been an inmate for the past 12 years intro-duces us the varieties of plants which give vegetables.

Alli Murugesan, founder of the institu-tion, who is instrumental in setting up this garden, says “I got inspired through my mother. She used to grow a lot of plants and so the love for gardening is inherent for me. I am very happy to see the children getting involved completely. A few of them will not get into any activity, even for them terrace gardening is a cake walk. For the recent, Navarathri festival we had sold many plants to the people who wanted to give saplings as return gifts and we got around Rs 2,000.”

Almost all types of veggies and greens such as tomato, brinjal, ladies finger, pump-kin, bitter guard, snake guard, radish, ele-phant’s foot, avarakkai, corn, beans, chillies, ponnankanni, palak, agathukeerai, manath thakkali, mint and curry leaves find promi-nent places in the garden. “We get greens weekly twice for all our 50 inmates and we pluck vegetables as and when we get them based on the season. We have many flower varieties too which beautify the garden,” says Ali.

Arali, Nandhiya vattam, rose, nithiya malli, pavazha malli, samanthi and lotus are the flower varieties being maintained in the garden. “We water the plants twice a day and we never allow the water to seep out of the pots. We also keep changing the posi-tions so that we can evenly spread the plants and also the flooring can be maintained,” she added.

Lotus plants in a cement tub with lots of colorful fishes serves like a additional feather on the cap of the garden.

The Visweswaraya Park in Anna Nagar, popularly known as the Anna Nagar Tower Park, is all set to get two

additional open air gyms with a variety of fitness equipment. Presently, the park has only one open air gym with the standard fitness equipment, as is seen in most other parks maintained by the Corporation of Chennai around the city.

“Right now fitness enthusiasts who visit the park get to use only one set of equipment that is located on one corner of the park near the pond. However, considering the large number of people who come here, this is woefully inadequate. So we decided to set up two more open air gyms with the same variety of fitness equipment in two other places in the park – both closer to the Ayyap-pan temple end,” said a Chennai Corpora-tion official, who did not wish to be named.

The fitness equipment that have been in-stalled in the two new gyms include an air walker for strengthening the thigh muscles, rotational equipment for the arms and a twister for shaping waists among others. “The installation of the equipment has been completed. The contractor is just finishing works on laying concrete floors. It will be thrown open to the public soon,” said the official.

Welcoming the decision to set up two more gyms, Kailash Chand Dugar, a regular walker-cum-fitness freak at the park, said, “It is good that the authorities have finally realised the need to expand the gym at two other places. Presently, the lone gym is not adequate to cater to the fitness needs of a vast number of visitors. We are forced to wait for 15 to 20 minutes to get to use any of these equipment in the early mornings and eve-nings.” “This park is spread across a radius of 1.150 kilometres. With such a vast ex-panse it is only logical that we should have more access to gym equipment at different locations. I am happy that soon I need not wait longer for my time to get on to the air walker,” said Bulbul Sharma, a resident of Anna Nagar A Block and a regular visitor to the park.

“We have only one concern. The au-thorities should not wait endlessly to get appointment from VIPs to throw open the two new open air gyms. Once the flooring is done, they should simply open it up for use,” said Senthilnathan, another regular visitor at the park.

As World Toilet Day is marked on November 19, make sure to pledge to give up bad toilet habits like spending leisure time in bath-room, kicking toilet handles to flush, and urinating on the toilet seat and then not cleaning it.

Some of the bad toilet habits that should be avoided:Ü Flushing is a good habit but

keeping the seat cover down while doing so is better. Germs and other particles become airborne when flushed with the lid open. Various studies have found that flushing with the lid open can splash water particles as far as six feet away from the toilet, causing outspread of bacteria in the bath-room atmosphere. To limit this, lower-ing of the lid be-fore flushing is an essential habit that one should adopt. Ü Keeping your

hands clean and flushing with your feet or shoes is a common prac-tice which goes unnoticed most of the t ime. This keeps germs off your hands but not from the bottom of your shoes or feet, which later end up on the floor of your homes and personal spaces. Thus, making this exercise a futile one. Washing

your hands thoroughly with soap after flushing is a good practice one should adopt as an infection control measure. Ü Living in the world of smart-

phones: Regular texting or scroll-ing through your mail in the toilet is common nowadays. But we are not aware that sitting for more than five minutes on the toilet, can increase the blood pressure in the anal veins. Apart from it, any object used or brought in the bathroom for a long time gets indirectly infected with the bacte-ria. You can always wash your hands after every bathroom break, but cannot disinfect the phone before you put it near your face for an incoming call.Ü One of the most common

unhygienic bathroom practises is urinating with the toilet seat down. This leads to spreading of bacteria on the seat which

later transmits to our body when you use it next. Every indi-vidual needs to wipe off the toilet

seat after using it to maintain the re-quired amount of

h y g i e n e a n d cleanliness in the bathroom. Ü A good

fragrance doesn’t harm anyone. A musky or a flowery air freshener whatever suits your senses is a good way to vent off the bad odour in the toilet.

Filmmaker Selvaraghavan and actor Suriya are teaming up for the first time for a yet-untitled Tamil project. Excited about the collabo-ration, the “Pudhupettai” director said Suriya is one among the finest actors in the country.

“Super excited about working with Suriya, one of the finest ac-tors in India and Dream Warrior Pictures, a young and energetic team,” Selvaraghavan, best known for films such as “Kadhal Kondein” and “Ayirathil Oruvan”, wrote on

his Twitter page. The announcement came as a

shocker to Suriya’s fans as well as the filmmaker’s followers as no-body anticipated the collabora-tion.

The project is expected to go on the floors next year as Suriya com-mences shoot of his next Tamil film, “Thaana Serntha Kootam”, with director Vignesh Shivan.

Meanwhile, Suriya awaits the release of “S3’, the third instal-ment in the “Singam” franchise.

An unhappy young man once approached his old Mas-ter and lamented about his worries. The Master instructed him to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink it.

“How does it taste?” the Master asked. “Awful,” spat the apprentice.

The Master chuckled and then asked the young man to take another handful of salt and put it in the nearby lake. The two walked in silence to the lake and when the appren-tice swirled his handful of salt into the lake, the Master said, “Now drink from the lake.”

As the water dripped down the young man’s chin, the Master asked, “How does it taste?” “Good!” remarked the apprentice.

“Do you taste the salt?” asked the Master. “No,” said the young man.

The Master sat beside this troubled young man, took his hands, and said, “The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains the same, exactly the same. But the amount we taste the ‘pain’ depends on the con-tainer we put it into. So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things.”

“Stop being a glass. Become a lake” is the underlying mes-sage. When our horizon is wide, no small worry can bother us. When we are limit-less, problems become limited. When we remain limited, problems become limitless.

Often most of the pains are

inflicted from outside. But what about the aches that ail us from within – pride, greed, jealousy, anger ? Simple. Let us give them a bigger dimension and different direction.

If we cannot get rid of pride, let us take pride in being born in India. If we are both-ered that we are greedy, let us be greedy of the ultimate truth. Likewise be jealous of others who serve. Get angry that we could not achieve something for the nation.

If so, the salt of pains will dissolve and the lake of happi-ness will remain.

Should we still lack the will to become a lake?

What next? Which one is the best? Where do we get information from? Is there anyone who can guide and support us in making the right choice? These questions keep run-ning in the minds of par-ents and students who are writing the Class XII board exams. Energetic prepara-tions, religiously followed

regimes, exam fear and attending various competi-tive exams are merely the tip of the iceberg; it’s just the beginning to months of strained waiting and follow up to get into a college of

one’s preference to study a course that will lead him or her to their dream voca-tion.

While there are a world of opportunities and an equally extensive number of professional courses, allied courses and an even more number of colleges that offer these courses, the bewilderment among par-

ents and students are the same, year after year.

More than the anxiety & tension of deciding the right college and course, it is invariably the lack of knowledge on the available

options that lets students end up in colleges and courses that they are least interested in. Thus, college life that is meant to be the most carefree and joyful phase in the life of stu-dents, turns out to be stren-uous and stressful. Many feel dispassionate towards their studies and lose focus on their goals.

The Department - Per-sonality Development-360° of Velammal Vidhyash-ram, Surapet, addresses issues related to physiolog-ical developments that happen during the adoles-

cent period; it also supports students with career guid-ance and information about various entrance exams, finer details about preparation for these ex-ams etc. Our team of 11 trainers work tirelessly to research and provide stu-dents with the right infor-mation at the right time.

Velammal IIT & Medi-cal Foundation (VIMF) at Mogappair, is actively en-gaged in coaching students to face competitive exams and attain great results. VIMF had organised for a 3-hour career guidance programme on Nov 12. It focused on the Medical & Engineering fields. The Head of Personality Devel-opment-360° facilitated the information provided and answered questions the parents and students of VIMF asked.

We live in a city where garbage dumping has

been a menace, but on Mayanam Road a narrow lane off Padi Kuppam Road near the Mogappair East Industrial Estate, dumping of garbage bins has become an issue. At the entrance of the road one can see many huge garbage bins of Chennai Corporation lying aban-doned for many months. When the Corporation insists on disposing the garbage at an appropriate place why can’t the Corpo-ration dispose the bins properly, one wonder.

“This Mayanam Road has five huge bins left un-used and the Padi Kuppam Road has one and also the Park Road. They are par-tially damaged but why can’t they repair and use them? When this city de-mands more such bins for garbage disposal why

should they leave them untouched for many months. If they cannot be repaired at least they can be sent for recycling or sold as scrap. Without considering anything how long can they be kept unat-tended,” asks Raguram, a senior citizen who stays in the vicinity.

Suseela, a resident says, “Government has publi-cised many public service announcements on how to control dengue, insisting on clearing all the waste products which have the capacity of accumulating waste

rain water. However, such huge bins definitely pose us a threat as we already hear many dengue affected cases in the city. It has the tendency to cause several other diseases apart from being the breeding ground for mosquitoes.”

“Already we have a ca-nal at the end of the road and that itself is more than enough to produce large number of mosquitoes. Adding fuel to fire, dispos-ing things like these is go-ing to aggravate the

situation. Mosquitoes cause several diseases these days. Either they should repair and keep the bins for usage otherwise; they should be sent for re-cycling. More than that, the Mayanam Road itself is very unsafe as the canal does not have a wall for protection. People also dump debris at the bank of the canal. Corporation needs to take a call on it” says Gunasekar who runs a cycle shop in the area.

To commemorate the 15th Anniversary celebra-tions of Born Baby’s, an exclusive baby shop in Anna Nagar, the show-room offers 5 to 15% dis-count on products till Nov 27.

Way back in the late 1990’s, exclusive baby shops were fewer in num-ber and one had to go all the way upto Nungambak-kam. It was then, a young entrepreneur Jeyanthi Na-than thought of the idea to start one at Anna Nagar. He was 27 years old when Born Baby’s, an exclusive baby shop to cater to the needs of residents in and around Anna Nagar was born in 2001.

Born Baby’s takes pride in saying that they are the pioneers in a posh locality like Anna Nagar. They have grown over the years and are in a position to supply mostly branded qualilty imported items at competitive prices. “There are distributors appointed in India itself and products are available right through the year,” said Nathan.

This showroom which was started in a small 300 sq ft area now occupies an area of nearly 1000 sq ft. Feeding bottles and acces-sories from Avent (Eng-land), Pigeon (Japan), Chicco (Italy); bottle food and cereals from Gerder (USA), Heinz (England); cosmetics and toileteries from Sebamed (Germany)

and Johnson & Johnson (USA) and diapers that originated from Saudi (genuine ones); accessories (cradlle, walker, feeding bottles and teether) and furnishings from Meemee and 1st Step; infant for-mula like Enfamil and Similac (USA), the famous brands are also available. The shop in its 15th year is a one stop shop for all ba-bies need. The shop func-tions at Anna Nagar: Shop No. 15, Ground Floor, C-47, Anna Nagar Plaza, 2nd Avenue, Anna Nagar, (Near Ayyappan Temple), Ch - 40. Ph: 26260532 / 26208406 / 9940573206. Born Baby’s have now started a branch at 100 Feet Road, Kolathur (Near Senthil Nagar Bus Stop).

What Germany battled 15 years ago in heart dis-ease and obesity, India is grappling with those issues now, according to a noted German cardiologist, who advised India not to make the same mistakes as his country and attack the problem at the core instead of treating the disease’s side-effects. “It (the situa-tion) is exactly the same, just 15 years later. You now have the obesity problem which we had after the war when people were trying to feed more. We still have it but it is going down,” Di-etmar Schmitz from De-partment of Cardiology and Angiology, Contilia Cardiovascular Centre in Germany, said on the side-lines of a programme or-gansied by the Medica Superspecialty Hospital here.

“We had higher level of ischaemic heart disease. It was resolved in the 1980s primarily with drugs. Smoking was not such a big problem in India, as it is now. Diabetes is a big problem in India now and

Obesity MAjOr threat to india

also the possibilities that you get the treatment,” he

added. Since 2008, Schmitz has trained over 60 doctors in India in cardio resyn-chronisation.

“Don’t make our mis-takes. We spent a long time treating side effects and not the basic thing. So they were treating hypertension

and diabetes like mad and the solution was getting the patient trimmed down. We didn’t do that,” he said.

“Gradually people start-ed questioning whether they want to live the rest of their lives on drugs,” he pointed out. Advocating preventive action to push heart disease at a later stage in life, Schmitz noted India is putting it at an earlier phase.

“You prevent and put it at a later state. India is put-ting heart disease at an earlier stage. The food system is getting better but obesity is a major concern and on the cardiac side it is the biggest problem,” he added.

metrowater to accept rs 500, rs 1,000 notes

Corpn gets record collectionGreater Chennai Corporation has collected

close to Rs 40 crore as property tax in the past five days, which officials say is a new record. The local body had announced that it would accept demonetised currency denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. Subsequently , the invalid notes have been piling up at the local body’s tax collec-tion centres.
