In a move that will help passengers identify the minimum fare of ordinary buses (Rs 5) operated by the Metropolitan Trans-port Corporation (MTC), officials have pasted stick-ers on the windshields of ordinary buses, specifying

the ticket charges.According to MTC, ever

since the transport depart-ment hiked its fares earlier this year, passengers were totally confused by the bus fares. Worse still, they were not able to distinguish be-tween ordinary and express

services. It has been found that about 60,000 commut-ers, who opted to travel by various other modes of transport after the fare hike, have now again started travelling by MTC buses. The hike in fuel prices and its cascading effect in other

modes of transport like cabs and auto rickshaws, could also be one main reason for this change. It is clear that one cannot travel by auto or call taxis for five rupees as minimum fare, these stickers are sure to attract more commuters.

A novel garden in Anna Nagar East

In what could serve as a model for the rest of the neighbourhoods of

Anna Nagar and Mogap-pair – and perhaps even for the Greater Chennai Met-ropolitan City – an area around a transformer has been fenced and converted into a garden in Anna Nagar East.

Usually the area around any transformer installed by the Tamil Nadu Gen-eration and Distribution

Company (TANGEDCO) is converted into a dump yard by people, who lack in civic sense. However, the area around a transformer installed at the entry of X Block, 5th Street, which falls under Ward 100 of the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion, has been put to novel use by some environmen-tally spirited persons, who have erected a wooden fence around it and kept plants in pots converting it into a mini-garden of sorts.

The fenced area has

small wicket gate for entry to water the plants kept in the pots. Ornamental plants have been kept in the pots in addition to a small tree in this novel garden.

“This is so pleasing to the eyes. Every time I pass through a transformer the garbage around it has hit me hard. But I was pleas-antly taken in by surprise to see this mini-garden at this transformer location in Anna Nagar East. It

makes me wonder why this concept can’t be repli-cated elsewhere in our neighbourhoods so that transformers will no longer turn you off and instead

offer you plenty of green-ery,” said Anitha, a resi-dent of Anna Nagar. The transformer is located ad-joining a compound wall, that is separated by a few hundred metres by the fa-mous Anna Nagar Tower Park (Dr Visveswaraya Park).

“This is indeed a lesson in civic sense and beautifi-

cation of the most unlikely corners of our streets. Whoever did this deserves to be praised. Occasionally I see someone entering the fence and watering the plants. It requires a great deal of dedication to main-tain this site in such a wonderful manner,” said Ramaseshan, a senior citi-

zen and resident of Anna Nagar East, complement-ing the people behind the green initiative. “I wish we are able to convert this novel initiative into a city-wide phenomenon just as the canal banks were beau-tified some years ago by the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion,” he added.

A movie on the plight of stage dancers is long overdue and the first of its kind, revealed director S N Hariram, delighted at the package of his offering, ‘Medai’ which had opened to an impres-sive audience response last Friday. A State award for the best story in his debut venture ‘Uyil Osai’ a good de-cade ago followed by a forgetful outing ‘Meen-aksi Kadalan Ilango-van,’ Hariram said he had a wealth of experi-ence assisting the late

director Sree Kumar in Malay-alam. “There were a few A rated movies where I learned a lot about the craft on the facet of direction. Those inputs were in-valuable when I branched out on

my own.” On his latest venture, Hariram said the script was play-ing in his mind for a length of time, having been witness to the ordeals of the dancers, both in stage and television. “They give

so much of conviction imitating the happen-ing names in the indus-try but do not quite find the means to make both ends meet. I have highlighted the travails of the ilk, for whom the stage is their world which crumbles when it is upstaged. The

story revolves around a teenaged girl happy in the world of hers with the love and support of four elder

brothers. When love blossoms in her life, she has to meet the chal-lenges, detailed in an imaginative way.”

In such a plot, Hariram saw it apt to have the character of Simbu as the main lead, chasing the girl all over the place. “After much scouting, we found Pugazh good enough to play the Simbu part but was found wanting in his expressions.

The best part was in all the artistes getting assembled in one spot and trained before the shoot. I had to keep the budget in mind

and am sure of the audience re-sponse to a unique idea.”

For many years now commuters of the Metro-politan Transport Corpo-ration (MTC) bus service have been complaining about the absence of bus shelters at a few stops in Mogappair East and Col-lector Nagar but to no avail. A cross-section of commuters complains that despite the issue being highlighted in the media including Mogappair Mail the authorities concerned have not bothered to build bus shelters. With the monsoon around the cor-ner, many patrons of the

MTC bus from these lo-calities dread at the pros-pect of getting drenched while going to office, col-lege and school.

Many years ago bus shelters were in place at the Velammal School bus stop and Mogappair Police Sta-tion bus stop – both locat-ed on Valayapathi Salai in Mogappair East – and in Collector Nagar on the direction of buses proceed-ing to Thirumangalam. However, these shelters were demolished over the years and now people are forced to wait under the hot sun and during rains in the open for their respec-

tive bus services to arrive.“I don’t even recall

when there was a bus shel-ter at the Mogappair Police Station bus stop. But I vividly recall that a con-crete bus shelter existed at the Velammal School bus stop. Though it was small, people could squeeze in and protect themselves from getting drenched dur-ing rains. But the bus shel-ter was demolished more than 10 years ago and since then we don’t have a bus shelter here,” complained Venkatesan, a resident of Valayapathi Salai and a patron of the MTC bus service.

A 'T' Junction on 10th Main Road in Anna Nagar

has turned into a dumping spot causing inconve-nience to residents living in the nearby vicinity. The 'T' Junction is located off Shanti Colony Road at the beginning of AJ Block Fifth Street and falls under the jurisdiction of Ward 100, Division 22 and Zone 8 of the Greater Chennai Corporation. A transform-er and a 'May I Help You’ police booth put up by the K4 Anna Nagar Police Station, under whose lim-its the area falls that are located at the spot serve a landmark for this location.

Residents of the locality point out that just near the police booth, right outside the compound wall of a multi-storied apartment complex, a heap of waste has been dumped. An as-sortment of waste ranging from household garbage to

thermocol and debris lies at the spot.

"This spot right at the entry to our apartment is an eyesore for everyone. Unfortunately, this is not being cleared leading to multiple problems for us," said a resident of the apartment next to the d u m p i n g s p o t , w h o wished not to be named.

Residents said that even the 'May I Help You' police booth that was set up on AJ Block Fifth Street some years ago is not being used. "We haven't seen a police-man or police woman at

this booth for ages now. In fact, some passersby some-time use the police booth as cover to attend nature's call here. They can as well remove the police booth," said Varadan, a resident of 10th Main Road. When asked about this, a police constable attached to the K4 Anna Nagar Police Station, who requested anonymity citing service rules, said, "How do you expect us to sit in a booth next to a dump spot. Also these days people mostly use Google Maps to locate any street so there is no

necessity for them to guide them to find any locality nearby. We also have sur-veillance cameras and mo-bile policing to keep the area safe."

"The authorities must act immediately and en-sure that the conservancy workers remove this heap of waste from this locali-ty", said Naresh Kumar.
