Monster Traffic Credibility Factor
Web Site Overview
General site/company information: In April 1994, Jeff Taylor decided to develop a
website where job hunters could search a job database with a web browser to look and find
jobs. That website is now known today as Monster, which is the only online recruitment
provider that is strictly global. Monster is currently in 50 countries worldwide and in 2008
Monster took over Chinas online job search by taking over ChinaHR to 100 percent. Monster
also partnered with News Limited in the Australian Market to seek further dominance in online
job searching. Another way Monster gets its name out is through advertisements. Some of the
websites Monster advertises on are Fastweb.com, Military.com, and Admissions.com.
To expand their online recruitment Monster has also teamed up with newspapers to
reach into their local markets in the United States such markets would include Boston, Chicago,
New York and Philadelphia. Not only can Monster help job seekers to find jobs but they can
also help employers find workers. Employers can log into Monster and post job openings or
even look at job seekers online resume. Monster has come out with some services such as
Monster Career Snapshots, Monster Career Benchmarking, and Monster Career Mapping.
Competing Site CareerBuilder: The main competitor for Monster is without a doubt
Careerbuilder. CareerBuilder started in 1994 as NetStart Inc. by Rob McGovern, who is the CEO

of Jobfox as well. CareerBuilder is currently located in 17 countries outside the United States.
CareerBuilder is ranked higher than Monster in all but one traffic website. According to
Compete.com CareerBuilder averages around 2.5 million unique visitors than Monster a
month . Another site worth mentioning as a potential competitor as well is indeed.com which
recently has been on the rise and averages 2 million more unique visitors than Monster.
According to Careerbuilder.com As the U.S.'s largest online job site, CareerBuilder.com puts
over 1 million jobs in front of poised job seekers wherever they are - at home or at work - in
print and on the Internet. More than 23 million unique visitors come to the site every month to
check out the opportunities in eve ry industry, field and job type. CareerBuilder and Monster
by looking through both sites are pretty much the same. Both sites have the same website
layout and they can post online resumes, look for job openings, and have employers post their
job listenings as well.
Traffic Source 1 Quarkbase.com
Results of Monster: On Quarkbase I figured out that Monster s overall internet ranking
in unique visitors this past July was 81 with 13,748,011 visitors. The unique visitors a month
graph has been on the rise this past year going from 10,962,209 visitors in July 2010 to
13,748,011 in July 2011. All of this information on Quarkbase is coming from their source
Compete.com. The competitors rank graph is based on a year outlook starting at 88 and ending
at 81. By looking at the graphs they both show a major decline in the month of December 2010.
According to tradershuddle.com Index declines 8 points (6 percent) in January on monthly
basis, as employers scale back hiring activity following a relatively active December. A seasonal

December-January decline has now been recorded for 4 consecutive years . So the month of
December has recently in the past 4 years been an issue in online hiring due to the employers.
So the decline was due to the time of the ye ar and wasnt something Monster itself was doing
wrong. Monsters daily traffic trend (which source is Alexa) is anywhere from 200 visitors a day
to a 1,000. Monster is a global company but the majority of their visitors are from the United
States with 82.1%, second goes to India with 6%, then China with 1.6%, then Pakistan with 1%,
and lastly UK with .7%. The daily traffic trend in both companies could slightly be off due to
their source Alexa. Their statistic comes from only the users that download the Alexa toolbar
which not many use.

Results of CareerBuilder: The internet rank for CareerBuilder this past July sits at 70
with 15,353,283 visitors. The unique visitors a month graph showed a relatively steady increase
starting at 14,083,134 visitors in July 2010 and ending at 15,353,283 in July 2011(source
compete.com). The competitors rank graph shows a decline throughout the year starting at 57
and ending at 70. So unlike Monster, CareerBuilder went down quite a bit in the rankings
despite the fact that they had a 1,270, 149 increase in visitors a year ago when they had that
higher ranking. The Daily Traffic graph (source Alexa) is anywhere from 200 visitors a day to
950. CareerBuilder main visitors are from United States as well with 94.6%, second is India with
2.1%, Canada with .4%, Pakistan with .3% and 2.7% goes to the other countries.

Traffic Source 2 Quantcast.com
Results of Monster: In the monthly United States people traffic chart on Quantcast,
Monster started around 25 million people in July 2010 and ended with 47.4 million in July 2011.
The graph is much like a roller coaster with all the ups and downs ending on a high note of 47.4
million people. Much like the last graph on Quarkbase it seems to go down in the month of
December then slowly back up after that. However, the visits are enormously larger than the
figures in the first source. Quantcast also includes demographics that inform us that 55% of
their people are female. The main age of the people thats using the website is 18-34 year-olds
with 37% and 35-49 year-olds are second with 34% and 58% of the users have no kids. The top
race that uses the website is Caucasian with 69%, and is followed by African Americans at 16%.
Of the people that use the website only 44% went to college, 41% didnt, and 14% went to grad
school. So according to the data, Monsters main target audience is 18-34 year-old Caucasian
females that have no kids and have went to college.
This graph compares Monster and CareerBuilder throughout the past year.

Results of CareerBuilder: In the traffic chart CareerBuilder started around 14 million in
July 2010 and ended with 11.8 million in July 2011. The chart is relatively decreasing and
steadies off towards the start of summer. This chart just like all the others has a major decrease
in people in December as well. The demographics are very similar to Monster with 56% female
and the main age is 18-34 year-olds with 37% and 35-49 year-olds at 35%. The top race is the
same as well with 66% Caucasian, followed by African American at 18% and 59% have no kids.
The people that use CareerBuilder 46% went to college, 39% didnt go to colle ge, and 14% went
to grad school. So according to the data CareerBuilders main target audience is 18 -34 year-old
Caucasian females that have no kids and have went to college. So obviously CareerBuilder and
Monster are going to have the same audience and this statistic shows that.
Traffic Source 3 Trafficestimate.com
Results of Monster: In the estimated traffic chart (visits) a month on
Trafficestimate.com, in August 2010 Monster had 21,591,600 visits and in August 2011 they
went down to 18,312,800. The monthly visitor traffic is also down 15.2% year over year. Ive
noticed this graph has more visits than the graph on Quantcast, but Trafficestimate never
mentions unique visitors much like my other source Quarkbase. Trafficestimate refers to them
as visits, while Quarkbase refers to them as people, which could be a completely different
meaning than a unique visitor and by judging the graphs based on their amount of visitors Id
say thats true. If you look at all three graphs they still have the same patter n, but the numbers
are off. According to Trafficestimate.com Trafficesimate.com has aggregated information

about monster.com (monster) to analyze the website SEO, competition, ownership, related
websites, and traffic stats .
Results of CareerBuilder: In the estimated traffic chart a month, CareerBuilder in August
2010 had 25,948,333 visits and in August 2011 they went down to 20,807,400. The monthly
visitor traffic is down 19.8% year over year. The pattern is also quite similar to the past two
charts bu t like Monsters chart, CareerBuilder has a lot higher numbers, but either way
CareerBuilder still has higher numbers than Monster. The benefit of this source it tells us how
each company is doing as of this month in August, unlike the rest of the charts that end in July.
Media Kit/ Advertiser Info Analysis
I searched through the Monster website and all I could come up with was the advertise
with us link. There wasnt any relevant information or statistics about the traffic within the
website. The page was pretty much explaining all the different ways and kinds of advertising on
the website without going into detail on how much traffic the site gets. So I also search
Monster.com Media Kit through the Google, but still had no luck after looking through all the
links.
Conclusion
In my conclusion with all the research and data that I acquired Id say CareerBuilder gets
by far more traffic than Monster. The graphs for both Monster and CareerBuilder have the
same pattern main ly because of the economy but their numbers dont quite match up. Out of
all but one graph shows that CareerBuilder is the clear winner with 11 ranks higher and around

2,500,000 more unique visitors than Monster according to both Trafficestimate and Quarkbase.
My other source Quantcast.com has Monster up to 47.4 million people per month which is an
outrageous amount compared to my other two sources. In the Quarkbase source it says that
96% of traffic that goes to CareerBuilder is from the United States and only 82% of traffic from
the United States goes to Monster. That statistic makes me think that Quarkbase is the most
reliable source mainly because Monster is a global company and theyd obviously have more
customers from other countries. With that being stated, in the end Monster gets more global
traffic, but CareerBuilder gets the most overall traffic.
