“The Mount Is a Faith Community, Serving

Our Students and Their Families with Mercy,

Compassion, and an Exceptional Christ-centered Catholic Education.”

Our Mission:

3 A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 0 9 - 2 0 1 0

Each and everyone of us has a “story” to tell, and as I reect on my own story, it amazes me how true the words, “God has a plan for all of us” really are when it comes to how I came to be at The Mount. Not everyone can say they were actually raised as a child where they now work! My favorite memories as a child running the halls (guratively and literally) are of Sister Wilmet and her hanging mobiles in the library; cooking in the Sisters’ kitchen with Sister Regina; being thrilled when Sister Justina would let me operate the old elevator; and how about having study hall with Miss Cunyan, and senior English class discussions with Mrs. Nina Smith! I wish for our students similar experiences that I had the blessing to have!

As you make the decision to support The Mount, please know that your trust in us is not only greatly appreciated, but is viewed with deep respect because of the many advancements we are able to continue to make. Our new programs in curriculum, technology, ne arts, and athletics are igniting within our student body an enthusiasm and pride that continue to rise and keep rising! Now my memories are being formed as the proud principal, and the excitement I see and hear in the halls is as I remember as a little girl, seeing her father interact with his students.

Thank you for the pride you have in “our” school, but more importantly, thank you for your response to give back to a place that transforms lives. Those who have walked before us, those who are walking with us, and those who will walk after us are to be admired as they take with them the spirit of ROCKET PRIDE and the lifelong memories of the Sisters of Mercy, all because of your generosity and your belief in our mission of Catholic education.

Proud to be an MSM graduate of 1980,

In December 2003, Mount St. Mary Catholic High School embarked on a $6 million “Setting Course” Endowment Campaign. The goal of the campaign was to create a pool of funds to generate income to be used toward the school’s operations. The school subscribes to a 5% rule, meaning that up to 5% of the interest earned from the endowment may be used for the school’s operating expenses. The corpus or principle of the endowment is permanently restricted.

Thank you to the numerous family and friends whose loyalty and commitment now have ensured The Mount’s nancial security and has set the foundation for future growth and advancement of the school.

Advancing the Mission

Remember the days when our “fund raising” consisted of car washes, discount card sales, rae tickets, selling magazine

subscriptions and everyone’s favorite, having a bake sale? All of these activities were of good intention, and they were

able to generate some cash ow to help sponsor a club, event, or activity. The problem was, these traditional methods of

raising money were never about building relationships or promoting the mission of Mount St. Mary.

Today at The Mount, thankfully, those methods of “fund raising” are over! Because of the generous giving spirit of our

Mount families, alumni, faculty, Board of Trustees, and friends, we have transformed from these nickel and dime bake

sales to cultivating support through our advancement program by partnering with our stakeholders through The Mount

Fund, Major Gifts, Special Events, and Planned Giving. This type of philanthropic support has made a major impact on

recent completed projects of the new student parking lot, the gymnasium air conditioning, the beginning phase of a brick

pilaster and wrought iron fence around the perimeter of campus, and the upgrade of school technology.

In the Advancement Oce, our “A Team” is inspired daily as we interact with our students. Mount students deserve the

very best, and when you partner in our mission by making a gift to the school, know that you are investing in the lives

of these students. It only makes sense that having a strategic plan to raise money will change more lives and further

advance our mission. Best of all this means, “No More Bake Sales”!

Gratefully,

Chris Stiles

Enrollment ManagementSince September of 1904 students have come to the “Castle on the Hill”, also known as Mount St. Mary’s Academy, to be educated by the Sisters of Mercy. In its early years, The Mount educated young women who traveled to Indian Territory from all across the country. Today, Mount St. Mary Catholic High School oers a very dierent, yet familiar, opportunity for both young men and women. The Mount, as the school is most aectionately called these days, has weathered her years from being the lonely building on the hill to the vibrant campus in the center of Oklahoma City.

Over the last 10 years, Mount St. Mary has undergone a transformation from a “well kept secret” to a much talked about and highly recognizable force on the Oklahoma education scene. Enrollment has soared from 220 students in 1999 to a near-capacity of 361 students in 2010. The leadership of Principal Talita Córdova ’80 DeNegri, outstanding faculty, and a well-dened mission that continues to embrace the core values of the Sisters of Mercy have been the catalyst for, strengthening our spiritual, academic and athletic programs. Families from across Oklahoma City appreicate the value of a Mount St. Mary education more now than ever before.

“This is an exciting time to be at The Mount,” said Admissions Director, Diane McGlashan ’71 Wilson. “As the Admissions Director, the fact that more people are inquiring about our school for their children makes my job much more fun. As an alumnus, the fact that we maintain an atmosphere where students love being here and supporting one another is heartwarming.”

The Mount FundThe Mount Fund is Mount St. Mary Catholic High School’s annual giving program. This past scal year was the third

campaign for this fund. The Mount Fund has grown dramatically each year and has been the catalyst for such projects

as the Library/Media Center renovation, improvements and renovations in the classrooms and hallways, and the new

student parking lot. All school clubs, teams, and organizations are now supported by this fund so that our constituents

are no longer burdened with traditional fund raising activities. The Mount Fund is used to enhance the experience for all

our students.

The Mount Fund Honor Roll: July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010

The names listed on the following pages recognize those who, through their generous and thoughtful gifts, have

partnered with us to strengthen Mount St. Mary Catholic High School. The Mount Fund donors for our scal year from

July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010, are included in this honor roll. We extend a spirit of gratefulness to all of those who

made a gift to The Mount Fund and to our leadership committee who devoted their time and energy to this successful

campaign.

Parking Lot RenovationThrough the contributions of our loyal constituents who gave to The Mount Fund and who attended Magic at The Mount 2009, the school was able to raise over $400,000

to expand and renovate the student parking lot that is located in front of the Pat Noyes Fieldhouse. The project was the rst step in addressing the school’s master campus

building plan. The school partnered with Nash Construction Company, Architectural Design Group, Karl Baldischwiler, and Tony’s Tree Plantation for the design, the

engineering, the construction, and the landscaping work and materials. Said MSM junior, John Tener, “The dierence between the old lot and the new one is like night and

day. When I drive onto campus each day before school, I have a great sense of pride in the look of the new parking lot.”

Because of a major gift received from Mr. Joe Rischard ’54, the gym has now been

changed from a sauna in the summer to a comfortable, climate controlled environment

by the addition of a central heat and air-conditioning system.

Mr. Rischard, who was recently named a Cornerstone of The Mount recipient, has been

one of the school’s most generous partners over the last few years. His family has a long

rich history with the school. His three sons graduated from The Mount, and he now has

grandchildren attending the school.

Mount St. Mary Catholic High School recently completed Phase I of surrounding

the campus with brick pilaster columns and decorative wrought iron fencing. This

initial phase bordered the newly renovated student parking lot. Columns with

naming rights were sold during a Dutch Auction at Magic at The Mount 2010. We

would like to thank the following Mount family members for purchasing these

columns:

Magic at The Mount 2009Over 300 friends of The Mount gathered for a spectacular evening for Magic at The Mount, the school’s dinner and auction

extravaganza that raises money to advance the mission of Mount St. Mary Catholic High School. The event was held at the

new Embassy Suites in Norman.

The event included generously donated items that were available at both the silent and live auction. The evening was

highlighted by a Dutch Auction raising approximately $9,000 earmarked for the band and drama programs at the school.

Magic generated a total of over $70,000 that was designated for renovations of the student parking lot. Tonya Averyt,

Mount St. Mary Director of Special Events stated, “Our goal was to continue the tradition of providing our constituents with

a world class event. We worked diligently to cut costs while still increasing revenues. This strategy increased our prots by

$20,000 over the previous year’s auction. I especially want to thank our committed and dedicated volunteer committee

who went above and beyond the call of duty to make the evening special.”

Magic at The Mount 2010For the second consecutive year, the Embassy Suites in Norman hosted Mount St. Mary’s premier special event, Magic

at The Mount. Proceeds from the event totaling $105,000, supported upgrades in school technology and built the

rst phase of the school’s perimeter fencing. Technology upgrades included the purchase of 15 laptop computers, an

iPad for student use, interactive classroom whiteboards for instruction, a new security system for the student parking

lot, and black box technology for the Heritage Room. A special Dutch Auction was held prior to the live auction in

which guests purchased brick columns and wrought iron fencing for the perimeter of the newly renovated student

parking lot. Said MSM parent and alum, Janis Streets ’78 Mollman, “The evening proved to be yet again enjoyable

and protable for a wonderful cause, Mount St. Mary Catholic High School. I especially enjoyed the live band and the

wide array of auction items!”

Heart of The Mount SocietyJoan Magerus ‘54 Wirt — Leaving a Legacy

What is a planned gift? A planned gift is a way to impact the lives of students attending The Mount long beyond your lifetime. A planned gift can be implemented during your lifetime, or as part of your estate through your will or trust. Anyone regardless of income level can make a tremendous investment in the future of The Mount by initiating a planned gift. Planning your gift may also help minimize taxes for yourself and or your beneciaries. Nearly any asset can become a planned gift: IRAs, investment accounts, life insurance policies, real estate or even oil and mineral rights. If you would like to join the Heart of The Mount Society by initiating a planned gift, please contact the Oce of Advancement at 405-631-8865.

As I reflect back on my years at The Mount, I have a true appreciation and respect for the Sisters who dedicated their lives to equipping me and my classmates with Mercy values. Those values that the Sisters taught have strengthened me through tough times and have inspired me to live a faith filled life.

Being involved with the school the last few years, I am thrilled by the progressive projects that are taking place on campus, while preserving the history and tradi-tion of a place that is so close to my heart and the hearts of the classmates from my generation. It is because of today’s leadership and the preservation of those values, that I am including a bequest to Mount St. Mary in my estate planning.

Blessings,

+
