What is it about Italy that continues to fascinate us? Its enduring timeless appeal is firmly grounded in its Art and History, its spectacular scenery, in its fashion and leading edge design, in its food and traditions, in the warmth of its people and the musicality of its language.

My students come to learn Italian because they will be traveling to Italy, because they have an Italian background or just because…. because like me, they have a love of the Italian language.

My passion for the Italian language comes not just from my own Italian background but from a fascination with how language works and how we as humans acquire language from an early age. This fascination has taken me from learning Italian, to a degree in Italian and education, to teaching Italian. Over 20 years I have taught adults, young adults and children from absolute beginners to VCE students.

My approach to language learning is a combination of an interactive model and a focus on language structures. Language is learnt through speaking and listening, as well as developing language awareness so that communication is accurate, rich and authentic. Earlier this year, I spent some

time at a world class language school in stunning Taormina in Sicily and found my own teaching style and methodology were closely aligned. I have also adopted the European model A1 – C2 of language course levels.

With this in mind I offer small group tuition in an optimum group size of no more than 6 students and a focus on personalized learning. Appropriately, I teach from the warm environment of my home around a large rustic wooden dining table overlooking our own beautiful MtEliza.

In 2012, I will be offering language, art and culture tours of Sicily in collaboration with fellow Sicilian and local identity Rosa Malignaggi, who will be running food and culture tours of Sicily. Together we will be able to offer a range of unique Italian and Sicilian experiences.

For all enquiries, further information and bookings for language classes or 2012 Sicily tours please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Term 2 courses start on May 2 and because of small class sizes places are limited.

Call today for your own Italian experience.

Passionate, motivated, approachableThese three words sum up Kate Smith, the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce’s newly appointed Head of Promotions.

With over 20 years experience in the field, Kate, a local Mornington Peninsula girl, is excited to be returning home and for the opportunity to contribute her wealth of knowledge to the Mt Eliza community.

Kate aims to build upon and complement the strategies implemented by outgoing Mt Eliza Chamber member Lucinda Bakhach, who has spent the last nine years transforming Mt Eliza Village into the vibrant hub it is today.

“Mt Eliza is very unique”, Kate commented.

“My role is to listen to the needs of traders,

and then combine these into fresh ideas which highlight what makes us special as a Village”.

And just what is it that makes us special?

For Kate, it is Mt Eliza’s beach lifestyle and strong sense of community. “The patrons of Mt Eliza are extremely proactive and keen to give back to the community”, she said. “There are thus great opportunities for small businesses to grow and for niche markets to develop”.

According to Kate, it is this type of positive growth that will turn Mt Eliza into a permanent fixture on the tourist trail, and she is looking forward to meeting the people behind the businesses that make Mt Eliza such a charming part of the Mornington Peninsula.

PL HAIR REMOVAL The Good, The Bad, & The UglyAs seen on the news and television, care must be taken when selecting a clinic to perform your IP/Laser Hair Removal and also Facial rejuvenation treatments for skin improvement. A number of “exports from China” are copied from more hi-tech, well tested units manufactured by world wide companies, and are on the market in Australia.

Not only cheap copy machines are available, but also machines which are highly underpowered. For example the Quantum IPL Unit is 1600 watts. Many cheaper units on the market today are 90 watts. These machines simply can not give you the longevity you are paying for with your hair removal.

Obviously cheaper machines means cheaper cost to the public, but you need to ask what you are paying for and the guarantee for long term results. If you are treated by a Medical Grade high powered effective machine your results should be progressively permanent. In short, when your treatment programme is finished, usually 8 treatments, (even though your last two treatments may be 10 – 12 weeks apart) your hair should not return apart from a couple of “fine fluffy hairs” or white hairs.

If your consultation is thorough, the clinic will be able to advise you of your long term results, regarding growth etc. depending on hair type and skin type. Each individual is different. Don’t be fooled by a clinic advising that you will be required to come in each year for more treatment. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – you are paying for the treatment.

Also in many clinics the staff are only trained for a day on

the machine they are using. Staff should have attended a government approved training course for the use of IPL/Laser, including a Laser Safety Course, usually approximately one week duration. Make sure your operator is fully qualified otherwise they may not have sufficient experience in hair, hair growth cycles, IPL wave lengths, safety areas etc. to give treatment with lasting results.

At Mt. Eliza Beauty Therapy we have been performing Laser Treatment for over 14 years and IPL for over 10 years and our clients do not return with hair problems. If you came to us 14 years ago we will still have your file. It pays to use established businesses. Sue Verheyen from Mt Eliza Beauty says “it is rewarding to be in the area for 30 years and performing these treatments for such a long time. Clients sometimes return to Mt Eliza after being treated 5 or 6 years ago, asking for another area to be treated and their original IPL hair removal has not returned. Clients in 90% of areas of the body should not require further treatments”

Facial hair which can be strong abnormal hormonal hair, varies greatly with each individual, but our clients are still extremely excited about their long term results. Clients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome no longer have to shave, and feel much better about themselves – this is a great bonus.

IPL treatments for vascular damage (red veins) and pigmentation require experience and a strong knowledge of skin and skin conditions. Sue Verheyen at Mt Eliza Beauty can give you just that. Good high standard medical grade equipment, with the addition of an experienced operator equals excellent results. You can turn your skin around – results are amazing. Make an appointment to see Sue regarding red veins, rosacea, pigment, acne, or even simple skin improvement.

“Clients want to experience new treatments, especially those which have a long term effect and produce positive results which are immediately visible and support their long term goals” says Sue. “We are here to give results, honest answers, and good service with a smile.

All the therapists at Mt Eliza Beauty are Advanced Skin Technicians and our IPL technicians are government approved. Phone 9787 7475 for a booking and speak to a professional.

Treatments at Impress Cosmetic Medicine aim to achieve a natural looking more youthful appearance. The clinic specializes in non surgical treatments, including the Natural LiftTM and Natural LipTM, as well as providing a comprehensive range of injectable wrinkle treatments, doctor only skincare products and skin treatments and infusions.

Many people will think of Hollywood stars with frozen faces, odd shaped eyes and trout pout lips when you mention cosmetic surgery or injectable treatments. The staff at Impress Cosmetic Medicine, have a philosophy that aims to subtly restore or enhance an individuals features whilst maintaining the natural harmony and balance of their faces. The key to being able to achieve these results is in taking the time to properly assess each person and individualize their treatment program. Most people do not want to look like they have had any cosmetic treatment, and in fact a large proportion of clients like to keep it a secret.

We are able to offer treatments to improve the appearance of the hands, neck and décolletage as well as the usual facial treatments.

It is also possible to treat excessive underarm sweating and bruxism (tooth grinding). To maximize the results of any cosmetic treatment, it is vital to couple this with a skin analysis followed by the prescription of an effective skincare regime. This will help the look, feel and luminescence of your skin and we are able to tailor a program to suit everyone.

Lotus Welcome Dr Troy MilesLotus Chiropractic has said ’goodbye for now’ to Dr Caroline Risby as she finishes work to have her baby, due at Easter time. It was only 18 months ago that she joined the practice to take care of owner Dr Kimberlie Furness’ patients while she went on maternity leave to have her daughter Evie.

Our other chiropractor Dr Joanne Dobson finishes in May to work as a volunteer in Malawi, Africa. Jo has been with us for almost 3 years and whilst we will miss her terribly, we wish her all the best as she follows her dream of making a big difference to those who need it most. She has a blog at jojomalawi.com if you want to stay in touch or make a donation to the impoverished people of Malawi. Together with one of our patients Erin Straford they plan to set up multiple long term projects to help the community of Salima which is on lake Malawi.

It’s time for Kimberlie to get back to work and increase her hours to full time now that Evie is a bit older and more independent…She’s now running!!

Dr Troy Miles will be joining her to cover some of Caroline’s shifts while she is away. At this stage she plans to be back in September. It’s been 6 years since we have had a male chiropractor at Lotus, so we look forward to introducing him to our practice members in the coming months.

Troy is experienced in many of the techniques that the chiropractors at Lotus apply and in addition has a passion for cricket and football - something that Kim, Jo and Caroline don’t quite have! So although there are quite a few changes happening at Lotus we feel confident that you will continue to be in wonderful chiropractic hands... ensuring that you can all reach your optimal level of health and vitality!!

Gouzlan Egyptian Jewellery is run by Farid Madkour who offers a range of items of exceptional quality, sourced from his buying trips overseas.

There are always exciting new products and Farid believes in a high level of personal service to ensure customer satisfaction.

From Farid: “Over the years we have been in Mt Eliza we have had many tourists from overseas and interstate visit our store and all have been impressed by our jewellery.

Since the move to our new location on Mt Eliza Way, these customers have increased dramatically and all share the one comment that they did not expect to find an Egyptian jewellery store in Australia.

Recently our customers are becoming increasingly excited about the Tutankhamun exhibition at the Melbourne Museum, and they ask many questions about the symbols and the meanings of the jewellery in our store.”

Lyndy Saltmarsh from Renew You Wellness Centre in Mt Eliza and Sorrento, has been in private practice for 13 years. She has a background in medicine with over 30 years of experience. You may have heard her on local radio station 3RPP during the past 3 years where she presented her program as a wellness coach and resource for the local community. Lyndy specializes in Kinesiology and Neuro Training to help you recuperate, by retraining your Nervous system to better adapt to stress, rather than compensate and suppress it and so create symptoms.

www.renewyousorrento.com.au for more info to explain about kinesiology/Neuro-Training.

Basically Kinesiology uses muscle checking to monitor the feed back in the nervous system, from the brain to the tested muscle. This muscle response shows where your stresses are. E.g. a virus or allergen is a stress, and would

change the muscles’ response. These imbalances are the result of the conflicts within you and these conflicts give you symptoms. e.g. digestive problems, irritable bowel, hormone imbalances, fatigue, allergies, stress, fear, negative behaviours, addictions, excess weight, insomnia, depression to name a few. Neuro Training goes further and uses your genetic references to help you recuperate.

Lyndy draws on a vast reference of knowledge and experience to treat her clients utilizing Naturopathy, Chinese Medicine, Neuro Organizational Technique (NOT), Homeopathy and Nutrition to personalize your consultation. Lyndy is the Director of The College of Kinesiology Melbourne and teaches Cert 1V and Diploma of Kinesiology/Neuro-Training, as well as one day courses for better health. Call for more information on courses.

Searching for the perfect smileDentistry is the science of the possible matched to the individual. Blending Art and Science to achieve a beautiful result.Visiting the Dentist is not always about disease or toothache - It can be about enhancing your smile.

The qualities of new dental materials have allowed us to achieve what wasn’t possible before.

Often patients have had years of complex dentistry involving root fillings and large fillings, bonding and even crowns. The medical issues are resolved but they still have a smile that they are self conscious about.

Other patients have always had a problem but they have been sitting on it out of fear of the unknown.

Many cosmetic problems can be corrected with amazing results. All that is required is time for assessment of the issues

and communication to arrive at the best way to solve the unique problems of each case.

We put in place a sensible planned and balanced approach with a full understanding of the time and costs involved. Treatment often involves stages. We can utilise the services of specialists or use special techniques that go beyond simple tooth shape.

These can include Orthodontists (tooth movement), Periodontists (gum health and shape), Implant placement and Laboratory technicians (crown and porcelain veneers, precision dentures). This is all coordinated by the restorative dentist.

We cannot overemphasise the importance of the “Vision” for the final result. It requires a firm commitment for excellence, attention to detail and an “Artists Eye” to make the result beautiful!

Treatment can cost several thousands of dollars to under one thousand, depending on the extent of treatment required. Cost does not necessarily relate to the look of the result. Inexpensive treatments can often lead to an amazing improvement.

If you are thinking of getting something done about your smile it is important that you ask questions, understand the process and have an estimate of costs and a clear idea of the outcome. Simple or involved - the results can be something to smile about.

Providing Relief From:

Relieving aches and pains at Myofit PeninsulaMyotherapist Joshua Fita took up residence in Mt Eliza last November, following four successful years at a private practice in Beaumaris.

He has since relieved the aches and pains of many Mornington Peninsula residents.

Myotherapy is the assessment and treatment of muscle pain, injury and dysfunction. The treatment is used in the preventative, corrective and rehabilitative phases of therapy to restore and correct damage to your body’s soft tissue structures such as muscles, ligaments, and tendons.

Common conditions a Myotherapist can treat include headaches, lower back pain, chronic overuse injuries (RSI, tennis elbow), jaw dysfunction, tendonitis, arthritis, shoulder pain, strains and sprains.

Joshua graduated from RMIT University with an Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy and is an accredited member of governing body, The Institute of Registered Myotherapists of Australia.

As head Myotherapist for the Victorian Junior Volleyball team, he cares for more than 40 rising, elite athletes. He was also a key member of the medical team appointed to assist TAC Cup Footballers.

An Essendon supporter and active golfer, Joshua has a keen interest in sport and sporting injuries. He takes a holistic

approach to treatment and rehabilitation.

Treatment methods include: soft tissue therapy, dry needling, vacuum cupping, active release therapy, corrective exercise, joint mobilisation, hot and cold therapy, stretching and other detailed techniques.

Joshua is based at the Nepean Health Group, opposite Manyung Gallery, on the Nepean Highway in Mt Eliza and is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

“I believe that people of all ages should receive some form of Myotherapy care, at least once a month, to compliment their current health regime. We service our cars, shouldn’t we service our bodies?” said Josh.

Myotherapy is claimable under the ‘extras’ component of most major health funds. The Hicaps system at the Mt Eliza clinic makes this quick and easy.

For appointments with Josh please call the clinic on (03) 9787 2859 and mention the Village Magazine to receive a half price Initial Consultation.

-Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at The Yoga House. Anna Jorgensen’s yoga tip for busy mums is to take a moment out for yourself every day: Read a book, have a cup of tea or just sit quietly for 10 minutes and only focus on your breathing - you will feel re-energised for the rest of the day.”

Did you know that yoga and HSC exams go together like peaches and cream? Exams are such a stressful time for teenagers and yoga can help young adults cope with the emotions and stresses involved. Aside from the physical benefits, yoga teaches teenagers techniques for coping with the unique issues they’re faced with everyday, insecurity about their changing bodies, the pressure to fit in, stressful schedules and exams to name a few. These techniques they learn at yoga will stay with them for the rest of their life. Teenage yoga is on Thursdays 4-5pm.

This year The Yoga House is happy to announce an all inclusive weekend yoga retreat on the 26/27 and 28th August on the stunning Mornington Peninsula. The retreat will include 4 yoga sessions including restorative and dynamic sessions, meditation, pranayama

On Thursday 31st March, Toorak College opened the doors to its highly anticipated new Music Centre. Guests attending the grand opening event were treated to an evening of performances, champagne and canapés in the new facility.

The project is the culmination of several years of planning by the school. Boasting 11 instrumental teaching rooms and 14 rehearsal rooms, the building also incorporates an impressive music technology room and recording studio.

With over 260 students currently learning a musical instrument at Toorak College, the Music Centre will bring together the music programs of both the junior and senior schools.

“Our youngest performers now work and play alongside mentors who have reached high levels of achievement”, said Noel Thomas, Principal of Toorak College. “They can see and aspire to what lies ahead”.

Victorian Opera’s Music Director, Richard Gill, commenced the evening’s proceedings before music heavy weight and award winning jazz musician, James Morrison, entertained the crowds

with his soothing soul sounds.

The instrumental and vocal ensembles of Toorak College’s talented music students further serenaded guests, who made the most of the facility’s indoor/outdoor amphitheatre.

It was an evening of celebration, and a fitting culmination to the creation of a great facility.

Mornington Peninsula Vignerons welcome visitors to warm Cellar Doors during Winter to taste new release wines, visit old favourites and to experience the seasonal offerings of the region. There is more to pruning in June, although many vignerons relish the rejuvenation of the vine following the busy harvest season. The majesty of the vineyards is perhaps no more apparent than when stripped bare.

The Winter Wine Fest held annually on the Saturday of the Queens Birthday long Weekend in June on the Mornington Peninsula. It is part of a weekend known as the Winter Wine Weekend when local wineries throw open their doors for a celebration of our local wine industry.

The Queens Birthday Weekend offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in wine, wander with the winemakers, visit the vineyards and taste new vintages. Three days of wine, food and song, pinot noir, chardonnay, pinot gris, shiraz, and a range of other less well known wines for the region, are matched with fine Australian cuisine, pizzas, emu snags, cassalinga food, saucy mussels and regional fare, home made soup by the fire in a mud brick cellar and long Sunday lunches. Whether at a vintage review, a wine and food matching program, blending your own sparkling dosage, or simply chatting with the maker, the wines of the Mornington Peninsula will be on show in grand style. The opening event is the Winter Wine Fest on Saturday June11, 11am - 4pm, at Red Hill Reserve and Showgrounds,

Arthurs Seat Road, Red Hill. Mel Ref: 190 J3. This is an exhibition and tasting which traditionally marks the beginning of the annual extensive Winter Wine Weekend program. All the usual stallholders will be attending with their fresh local produce and homemade goodies.

Sadly two young boys died last year as a result of a faulty gas heater which caused a higher than normal dose of carbon monoxide to be present, although this is a sad reminder it does reiterate the importance of getting your gas heater serviced by a licensed gas service technician.

Hazards such as spiders, ants or rodents have a habit of nesting in heaters and its burners during the warmer months, this can contribute to problems with the unit, including explosive ignition.

Other common problems associated with heaters are pet hair and dust from the house. This builds up on the fan assembly and other components of the heater and can cause overheating and the short circuiting of electrics which can result in a Fire Hazard!

Energy Safe Victoria recommends that you service your heater at least every two years. Gas heaters are the unsung hero in the household keeping you warm on the coldest nights. While keeping you warm your heater can produce Carbon monoxide a silent killer.

So please have your heaters serviced by the team at All Seasons Bayside Heating & Cooling before the winter months close in and have peace of mind all winter long.

All Seasons Bayside has been operating as a Company on the Peninsula for more than 25 years and offer a full range of servicing on all your gas appliances. We use fully qualified tradesmen to service repair and install your gas appliances.
