The catalogue presents RELF medium voltage switchgears:

    - with air insulation,- metal clad,- compartment, withdrawable type,

    - with a single busbar system,- nominal voltage up to 24kV,- adapted for interior installation.

    2. Switchgear description

The RELF switchgear is intended for switching stations of companies which generate, transmit and use electric power. It is compliant with standards (IEC) PN-EN 62271-200and (IEC) PN-EN 60694, it provides a degree of protection up to IP4X for casing and IP2Xfor internal partitions, according to (IEC) PN-EN 60529. The switchgear is suitablefor operation under normal conditions defined by the standard (IEC) PN-EN 60694for interior distribution and control equipment. The switchgear was designed in such a wayas to ensure safe normal operation, inspection and service.

The switchgear is a frameless structure made of riveted, hot-dip galvanizedsteel sheets. This is a multi-compartment cubicle whose walls and partitions forma self-supporting structure.

The switchgear cubicle is divided into compartments: connection compartment, busbarscompartment, main device compartment (with a withdrawable unit) and auxiliary circuitscompartment

Doors and side shields of the outermost panels (rear shields for the wall installationversion) are covered, as a standard, with a powder coat of grey colour (RAL 7032)or another colour, upon the customers order.

    .Types of fields

The switchgear consists of panels with various functions. These are:

    - incoming (supply) panel with a circuit breaker and voltage measurement,- outgoing (outlet) panel with a circuit breaker or contactor,- left / right coupling panel or rear cable connection, with a circuit breaker,- left / right coupling panel or rear cable connection, with a bridge,

    - measurement panel, with earthing of main busbars,- panel with a load-break switch.

The withdrawable unit may be equipped with a circuit-breaker, contactor, bridge, set of transformers with fuses or block with fuses. It can assume the following positions:connected, test/disconnected and removed (beyond the panel).

Interlocks are used for the withdrawable unit with the circuit-breaker or contactor thatmake it possible to perform switching activities only in the connectedand test/disconnected positions. Withdrawing or slipping the withdrawable unit to/fromthe operation position is possible only if the main connector is open.

The main connector may only be closed if it is fed from the auxiliary circuits.

    3. Switchgear construction

    Structure

The RELF switchgear panel is constructed as a cubicle with four separate functionalcompartments:

    - busbar compartment (main circuits),- main device compartment (main circuits),

    - connection compartment (main circuits),D - auxiliary circuits compartment (low voltage circuits).

The switchgear cubicle is a riveted steel structure of bent steel sheets, without welding. Its walls and partitions form a self-supporting structure. The cubiclesare constructed of hot galvanised sheets 2 mm thick. The sheets are joined with steel flat head rivets of high strength.

The functional compartments are limited by internal partitions, vertical or horizontal.Internal partitions are fixed to side walls, which reinforces and stabilises the whole casing.Additionally, the external walls of the switchgears outermost panels have double sideshields, screwed to them; the shields are made of painted 2 mm sheets.

The RELF switchgear may be manufactured as a free standing installation or forinstallation of the rear wall. In the case of the rear wall version, the rear door

with interlocks are replaced with a screwed down shield. The front strip between the main device compartment door and the connection

compartment door, as well as the level partition between the two compartments, are both removable, which significantly facilitates maintenance.

The internal partitions provide safe access to the main devices compartmentand connection compartment, even if the busbars are live.

According to the LSC (Loss of Service Continuity) category, the RELF switchgearis compliant with LSC2B. This condition is fulfilled by three-compartment switchgears whenthe withdrawable unit is in the off position.

Doors of the main circuit compartments are made of black painted 3 mm steel sheet.Doors are fitted with hinges and locks that are able to withstand explosion loads.

The hinges allow for opening doors at 135. Side edges of doors are protected by lock boltsand hinges.

Top and bottom door edges are stiffened with stiffening sections, specially shapedand welded in.

The main device compartment door is fitted with an inspection hole for visual controlof the withdrawable unit position and connection activity. The door structure allowsfor mechanical switching off of the circuit breaker in the connected position, throughthe closed door.

    Vent flaps.

In the upper part of the main circuit compartments, there are openings of exhaustventilation ducts, closed with flaps. Their task is to discharge the pressure created insidethe compartment as a result of an internal arc fault.

A sudden increase of pressure inside the switchgear compartment breaks the plasticscrews and opens vent flaps which may work with limit switches installed on the switchgearroof. The limit switches, controlled with the opening flaps, generate a pulse triggeringthe power circuit breaker. This limits the consequences of the short-circuitarc formed inside the cubicle compartment.

The withdrawable unit is a system comprising a running gearand depending on functioncomprising also: circuit breaker, contactor, a set of voltage transformers with fuses or ashort-circuiting block. The running gear provides a mechanical connection between thewithdrawable unit and the switchgear panel. Its stationary part is coupled with the panel bytwo-sided locking in the slideway notches.

The movable part of the running gear moves between the connectedand test/disconnected position with a lead screw, hand-driven with a crank, with the doorclosed. The connected position and the test/disconnected position are signalledby the position indicator once the unit gets into proper position.

Movable partitions in the main device compartment are presented as a part of the maindevice compartment description.

    Distribution panel compartments

The busbars compartment is inaccessible during normal operation.

For maintenance works, the busbars are accessible from the cubicle top, if the exhaust flapsare dismantled. The compartment is closed on both sides with bushing plates made of non-magnetic steel sheet. The plates protect the neighbouring panels in case an electric arcappears in the busbar compartment.

The bushing plates with bushing insulators are elements which support the busbars.Distribution busbars branch off from the main busbars and get into the support bushinginsulators which separate the busbar compartment from the main device compartment.

The main device compartment is accessible after its door is opened in theinterlock-controlled mode. The main device compartment contains the withdrawable unit,as well as all the elements necessary for its co-operation with the distribution panel, such as: slideways of the withdrawable unit, movable partitions, support bushing insulatorswith inter-compartment contacts built-in, elements of door interlocking and earthing switchinterlocking, as well as control circuit sockets.

The non-magnetic steel plate which separates the main device compartment fromthe connection compartment and busbar compartment is fitted with support bushinginsulators. Distribution busbars and inter-compartment contacts are set in the insulators.

The main device compartment is fitted with metal movable partitionswith their actuatingmechanism. They are to separate the compartment space from the stationary contacts, which may be live, when the withdrawable unit is in the test/disconnected positionor removed position. After the withdrawable unit is shifted from the connected positionto the test/disconnected position, they cover the support bushing insulator holes and closethe access to the live inter-compartment contacts; the protection level remains compliantwith IP2X. There is a safe insulation space between the contacts and the closed cover.

If the withdrawable unit shifts from the test/disconnected position to the connectedposition, the movable partitions draw aside and the stationary contacts are uncovered, which allows for connecting the circuit breaker contacts.

The sight glass allows for visual inspection of mechanical indicators of the circuitbreaker state and the drive loading state.

The connection compartment is designed to connect cables or busbars and it isaccessible by opening the compartment door (the front one in the rear wall installationversion and front and rear ones in the free standing version) in the interlocking controlledmode. This compartment is fitted with current transformers, earthing switches and(depending on the operational needs) optional: voltage transformers, earth-fault current

transformer and surge arresters. The voltage transformers are installed in the front part of the connection compartment.

The earthing switch is hand-operated. Its loading state is signalled with a position indicator.

The compartment bottom is closed with a sectional floor cover which is a cable channelplate at the same time. The plate holes are protected with rubber cable channels. The cables are fixed with cable clips set on brackets.

The auxiliary circuits compartment (low voltage compartment) is made as a controlcabinet and it is completely separated from the high voltage zone of the switchgear. The cabinet has its own metal casing and it is prefabricated independently from the power

part of the switchgear. As it is assembled, it can be fitted with devices at a separate standand only then fixed to the switchgear cubicle.

It is designed for the installation of: protection units, inspection, controland measurement apparatus, as well as automatic control elements.

The cabinet is installed on the switchgear roof, above the main device compartment. The cabinet bottom, as well as its rear and side walls, have many openings for cableand conductor channels. The holes are covered with plates that may be removedas needed. For apparatus installation, a perforated installation plate is designedon the rear wall of the cabinet. The apparatus may also be installed on side walls. The cabinet structure may be customised in agreement with the manufacturer.

    Busbar system

    Main busbars

In the switchgear, there is a single three-phase busbar system with a triangulararrangement of phases. They run in a separate compartment.

Copper flat busbars have been selected, with rounded edges, of the following intersections:

    - in the 12 kV switchgear: for 1250 A current 10010 R5 mmfor 1600 A current 2(6010 R5 mm)for 2500 A current 2(10010 R5 mm)

    - in the 17,5 kV switchgear: for 1250 A current 10010 R5 mmfor 1600 A current 2(6010 R5 mm)

    - in the 24 kV switchgear: for 1250 A current 8010 R5 mm.

The main busbars are supported by the distribution busbars running from the supportbushing insulators and by the bushing insulators installed in the side partitions.

The distribution busbars are made of:- copper flat busbars with rounded edges, of the following intersections:

    for 630 A current 4010 R5 mmfor 1250 A current 2(4010 R5 mm)for 1600 A current 2(6010 R5 mm)

    - an oval copper rod, adjusted to the outlet hole of the support bushing insulatorof the following intersection:

    for 2000 A current 70x24 mmfor 2500 A current 70x24 mm.

    Insulation elements

The switchgear has been equipped with insulators made of epoxide resins. In the connection compartment, busbars are supported by the supporting insulators.

For supporting busbars or channelling them between the switchgear panels, bushinginsulators have been set in bushing plates of the panels' side walls.

The channel in the partition between the main device compartment and the busbarcompartment and connection compartment is provided by the support bushing insulator.Three types of insulators are used, depending on the current and voltage.

    Earthing protection

There is an earthing conductor in each enclosure (a copper bus with 40x5mmor 40x10mm section) located at the bottom, on the back of the enclosure. These conductors between the enclosures are connected by bridges forming an earthingbus conductor. The bus conductor ends with terminals on the right and left hand sideof the switchgear used to connect it to the facilitys earthing system.

    Connecting cables

The connection compartment is designed to lead one- or multi-core cables in plasticinsulation. Before using a cable in paper insulation, contact the manufacturer

of switchgears. We recommend cable fittings manufactured by Tyco Electronics (Raychem),a company whose products we distribute.

Interlocking and protection against improper operations

The RELF switchgear is equipped with mechanical and electrical interlocking, compliantwith the standard or additional requirements, to improve the safety of operation:

    Mechanical interlocks:

    1) making it impossible to slide in or out the withdrawable unit into the connectedposition when the circuit-breaker is closed (required by the standard),

    2) allowing the circuit-breaker to be opened or closed only in connectedand test/disconnected positions (required by the standard),

    3) allowing the earthing switch to be closed only in test/disconnected or removedposition of the withdrawable unit,

    4) not allowing the withdrawable unit to be shifted from the test/disconnected position

into the connected position if the earthing switch is closed,5) preventing the main device compartment door from opening if the withdrawable unit

is in its connected or intermediate position,

    6) preventing the cable compartment door from opening if the earthing switch is open,

    7) allowing to change the position of movable element in the panel provided it is locked.

If the switchgear manufacturer agrees, it is possible to use additional key interlocks.

    Electrical interlocks:

    1) prevents the circuit breaker from tripping when the auxiliary circuits are not live;the circuit breaker may be tripped out only mechanically (required by the standard),

    2) prevents the movable element from shifting to the connected position withoutfeeding the control circuits,

    3) prevents access to the earthing switch drive when closing the earthing switchis conditioned by additional factors (e.g. the busbar earthing switch can onlybe closed if the withdrawable units of a particular section are in the off position),

    4) prevents access to the movable element drive if its shifting is conditionedby additional factors.

Interlocks, apart from those required by standards, are adjusted to each individual project.

After obtaining the approval of the switchgear manufacturer the device may be fittedwith additional interlocks whose operation is based on miniature switchesand electromagnetic locks.

The door structure makes it possible to unlock the door in an emergency and accessthe movable element drive in extraordinary situations.

    4. Switchgear equipment

    Switching equipment

The switchgear may be equipped with vacuum circuit breakers VD4 (ABB),Evolis (Schneider), 3AH or SION (Siemens), NVL (Ormazabal), gas-insulated circuitbreakers HD4 (ABB), LF (Schneider) or contactors V-Contact (ABB).

Other equipment may be used after obtaining the switchgear manufacturers consent.

As a standard, an EK6 (ABB) high-speed earthing switch is used, with a possibilityto trip at short-circuit.

    Measuring equipment

Current and voltage transformers from ABB are used for measurement.

The voltage in panels is signalled with reactance insulators and a signalling cassette.

    Protection equipment

Low voltage equipment from any manufacturer may be built into the switchgear, according to the customers individual needs.

It is possible to install any digital relay to protect the medium voltage circuits.

There is a possibility to install the arc protection systems in the switchgear. The suggested arc protection systems are Z or VAMP. The systems sense

if there is a short-circuit with their flash detection and current or voltage criterion insidethe protected switchgear. If both events are simultaneous, the system is activatedand a pulse is sent within a defined time (below 10 ms) releasing the main switch.

    5. Main circuit and auxiliary circuit diagrams and switchgear automation,

Main circuitsThe structural diagrams of example main circuits are presented in Figure 2 and in the

relevant catalogue sheets that can be found in this catalogue and on the websitewww.elektromontaz1.pl. The connection compartment has various equipment depending onthe panel type.

Auxiliary circuitsThe low voltage auxiliary circuits include: protection, measurement, control, automation

control and signalling systems. The devices of these circuits are enclosed in the auxiliarycircuit cabinet located above the main device compartment. The cabinet dimensions and example of device arrangement are presented in Figs. 3 & 4.

In order to obtain examples of internal and installation connection diagrams for mainand auxiliary apparatus for typical switchgear equipment, please contact the switchgearmanufacturer.

Switchgear automationThe switchgear is suitable for operation in an integrated control, display and data

collection system. For this purpose, it is fitted with digital protection relays(with the possibility of digital communication) and with power engineering automation controlunits. The switchgear may then operate in superior and automatic control systems.

    6. Switchgear packaging, transport and installation

    Packaging

Three types of packaging are used for the RELF switchgear:

    a) standard: the switchgear enclosure placed on a pallet is wrapped in air bubble filmand then in stretch film,

    b) crates: the switchgears packaged as above are placed in crates,

    c) especially for maritime transport: the switchgears with a moisture absorbing agentplaced inside are packed into bags made of film with preservation properties, fromwhich air is sucked out.Switchgears preserved in this manner are transported onpallets or in crates.

    Transport

As a standard, switchgear enclosures are transported individually. Switchgears may betransported to the room they are intended for and moved within that room usinga crane, fork lift truck or on rollers.

The enclosure is f i t ted with transport gr ips for crane l i f t ing.The bend angle of fastening ropes should not exceed 120. It is forbidden to fastenthe ropes directly to the enclosure structure.

The enclosure is placed on a transport pallet in order to make transport with a fork lifttruck possible.

During switchgear transport and placement caution should be exercised so as not todamage the coating and the protective sheet metal.

Principal equipment such as circuit-breakers, contactors and withdrawable units

and low voltage equipment sensitive to shock are transported separately in originalpackaging supplied by the manufacturers.
