Since 1928 when General Electric introduced its vertical lift metal-clad

switchgear, a steady steam of technological improvements has provided a

consistently high quality, durable, product with superior performance. Many

units over 50 years old are still in service and performing well.

Even today, as aging is taking its toll, Powercon's 33 RR''ss of SSwwiittcchhggeeaarr

EEccoonnoommiiccss -- RReemmaannuuffaaccttuurree -- RReehhaabbiilliittaattee -- RReeppaaiirr -- will add many more

years of dependable service to those rugged structures so long in service.

Powercon has been building new VVeerrttiiccaall LLiifftt MMeettaall--ccllaadd SSwwiittcchhggeeaarr along

with new PPoowweerrVVaacc VL breakers that can mmaattcchh aanndd lliinnee uupp with existing

gear, or new units as a separate line-up, all with interchangeable circuit

breakers. Readily expand present vertical lift line-ups. Add on to either ends;

indoor, outdoor, common aisle or protected aisle.

In addition to improvements over the original products - brought about by

Powercon's 40 years experience with vertical lift switchgear and newer available

technologies, we offer you the opportunity to uuppggrraaddee your existing or new

vertical lift switchgear. This is generally brought about by requirements for

hhiigghheerr ccoonnttiinnuuoouuss ccuurrrreenntt requirements in existing units or hhiigghheerr sshhoorrtt

cciirrccuuiitt requirements that can be introduced into those units.

Existing units that can be upgraded for either higher current or higher MVA or

both are detailed in Table 1 on page 3.

POWERCON’S VERTICAL LIFTSWITCHGEAR:

Perplexed with the availability of critical parts tomaintain GE magne-blast switchgear? Unable tomaintain asbestos in arc chutes? Concernedabout the reliability of renewal and upgradingoptions being offered by others? Contemplatingtearing out the cubicles and starting anew?Don’t! There is a practical solution.

Powercon is a committed engineering companythat has vast experience enabling cost-effectiveexpansion, upgrading and modernization ofmedium voltage power systems or switchgear.Completely compatible for match and line up withswitchgear using GE vertical lift magne-blastbreakers, Powercon equipment provides a level ofprotection not previously available. Among thebenefits:

v AdaptabilityReadily expand present GE line-ups. Add on toeither end; indoor, outdoor, common aisle, protected aisle.

Unlike some modernization approaches, Powerconswitchgear does not require the expense or floorspace needed for transition compartments. Buspass-throughs and connections are at the samelevel. Just remove the side panels and bolt up.

v Up – To – Date Equipment andTechnology

There are no remanufactured or previously usedbreakers, structures or component partsemployed. Powercon switchgear is all new, andbacked up by new equipment warranties andservice.

v InterchangeableKey parts of Powercon switchgear areinterchangeable with original GE vertical lift line-

ups. For example, GE magne-blast breakers with ML-13 storedenergy mechanisms are directlyinterchangeable – electricallyand mechanically – with modernGE PowerVac VL VacuumCircuit Breakers. As a result, yougain an important safety marginfor system availability andreliability.

v Quality Assurance FromOriginal Designs

Powercon switchgear units arebuilt from available originalengineering documentationwhich have been maintained onvertical-lift installations since theearly 1950’s – added assurancethe new equipment will deliverdurability, reliability andperformance experienced withthe original installation.PowerVac VL breakers arecompletely design tested to ANSIC37.06 and C37.59

v Cycloaliphatic Insulation – Superior toPorcelain

Cycloaliphatic bus supports and/or thru-bushingsare used on all live conductors – main bus, run-backs and PT connections. Cycloaliphatic is thematerial that has proven best for severeenvironments of high humidity, and contaminationsuch as encountered in refineries, paper mills andcoastal locations. Of course Porcelain is stillavailable.

v Vacuum InterruptionFor power switching, the new equipment relies onVacuum Circuit Breakers. Among theiradvantages, the breakers perform numerous full-load switching operations with little deteriorationto interrupting contacts – a major reason forcritical breaker maintenance. On average, thebreaker can be routinely maintained in one-thirdthe time required for magne-blast breakers.

PROTECTION OPERATOR CAN SEE

When lowering a breaker, the operator has completecontrol. Safety shutters automatically move into placeto cover energized parts.

CURRENT TRANSFORMERS

Readily accessible toroidal CT’s are standard. Bar typeCT’s with additional metering or relaying accuracy can besubstituted up to 1000 amps.

GE POWERVAC VL VACUUM CIRCUIT BREAKERS

Interchangeable with existing breakers, PowerVac VLVacuum Circuit Breakers will meet the same performancerequirements using modern vacuum technology, but withfewer parts and considerable less maintenance. Type ML-18 operating mechanisms are used for all ratings.

INSULATING SYSTEMS

Main bus and other live conductor supports arecycloaliphatic epoxy for an increased creepage path toground, and high resistance to environmentaldeterioration. Insulating boots are provided for inspectionof bus joints.
