MYDATA introduced the next gen-eration of pick and place machines at this year’s APEX show in Las

Vegas. The MY100Series is a completely new placement machine platform which is pushing the limits of SMT technology. The new machine series broadens the MYDATA product range to suit even higher production requirements.

“Our role at MYDATA is simple”, states MYDATA CEO Bengt Broman. “To anticipate the needs of our customers and to provide solutions that help them achieve their goals of growth and profitability. I am excited by the fact that the MY100DX not only meets this requirement, but exceeds all expectations”.

The MY100Series delivers 70% more throughput and a host of other enhance-ments - whilst still maintaining MYDATA’s traditional values of flexibility and efficiency.

“The MY100 is the most complete, all-in-one SMT machine in the industry”, says Robert Göthner, Vice President Marketing and Sales at MYDATA. “The machine is designed for a 24/7 production environment; with higher speeds, a higher feeder capacity, higher accuracy and improved reliability – all in a machine that’s as flexible as anyone would expect from MYDATA”.

The new series consists of MY100DX-10 and MY100DX-14, with 96 and 160 feeder positions respectively, and can be configured with various synergy options for in-line pro-duction. The new machines are compatible with the existing range of machines, feeders and software, giving customers the oppor-tunity to utilize previous investments and match their needs exactly.

The MY100Series was released worldwide on April 10, 2008.

Spring is here, and

as we look for-

ward to summer

it’s time to sum up the

first part of 2008. What

i can see is that the

Nordic summer light

is almost as bright as

the mood of MYData

right now. our product

range is stronger than

ever. after extensive

development work,

we are now launch-

ing generation 2 of

MY500 on all our markets. We also present an entirely new pick

and place machine in MY100.

i am delighted about the very successful aPEx exhibition, where,

for the first time, we had the privilege to introduce our jet printing

Success breeds success. This is as true for electronics manufacturers as it is for any other business. And there is no

doubt that MYDATA customers are success-ful. Their ability to meet short lead times, their flexibility to handle a wide variety of jobs, and their overall efficiency mean that they are seeing increasing demand. But tak-ing on more jobs, with higher volumes and increased complexity, presents customers with new challenges. These challenges now have the perfect solution.

A completely new series of MYDATA placement machines is pushing the limits of SMT technology – delivering approximately 70% higher throughput and a host of other enhancements – whilst still maintaining

MYDATA’s traditional values of flexibility and efficiency.

As one customer who is using the new machine explained, “We are seeing much greater throughput, and we are still getting all the flexibility we need. For example, a board that used to take seven minutes can now be produced in four and that is before we’ve had a chance to properly optimize the set up.”

The new series consists of MY100DX-10 and MY100DX-14 (with 96 and 160 feeder positions respectively, and with T4 convey-ors), plus various synergy options for in-line production (see opposite). The new machines complement the existing range, giving cus-tomers even greater choice and the opportu-nity to match their needs exactly.

been increased to 34k components per hour. But more importantly, actual throughput has increased up to 70% on average for typical high mix applications. Obviously, for synergy set-ups the difference is even greater. What’s more, feeder capacity has been increased while floor space has been reduced!”

Overall speed is only one of many new ad-vantages. For example, Active Side Balancing improves efficiency by automatically giving priority pcb access to whichever mounthead requires it in order to maintain optimal ef-ficiency. This is an extremely useful feature for optimized set-ups when feeder reloading

is carried out during ongoing production. The need to ‘warm up’ to working tem-

peratures is completely eliminated. Automatic Thermal Adaption continually recalibrates settings ensuring consistent accuracy whether the machine has just been switched on or it is at the end of an eight hour shift. Also, the use of a new, rigid machine frame further supports placement accuracy.

Service needs have been streamlined with more convenient access to sub-systems and exchangeable parts. Software with built-in service support along with operator alerts and a dynamic maintenance schedule ensure maximum production time and stress-free maintenance.

“We’re talking about a new era. A generation shift in flexible SMT placement machines”, says Fredrik Moberg, Product Manager at MYDATA. A completely new linear drive mechanism has been developed that enables two separate plates to run independently along the machine’s x-axis. Each plate carries both a high-precision single head (Midas) and a multi-nozzle head (HYDRA). Perfor-mance has been further improved by incorpo-rating several high performance processors in the new system. Each processor is dedicated to specific tasks providing better control, accuracy and acceleration speeds.

Fredrik continues, “The rated speed has

MY100DX uses the existing range of smart magazines and feeders which makes sure customers can utilize their previous invest-ment. And, although the underlying software has been newly developed to handle the dual x-drives and other new sub-systems, anyone familiar with the existing software will be up and running on the new machines after only a brief introduction.

Another company which has evaluated the new machine explained that their customers were halving lead times in some cases, “We produce a lot of low volume, high density boards with short lead times, so for us flex-ibility is all important. MY100DX really does give us everything we need in one machine.”

For a third customer the new series has ar-rived at the perfect time. “We are looking to increase capacity this year at the same time as tightening up our internal efficiency. We are confident that MY100DX will be able to help us achieve both of these targets.”

Fredrik Moberg is encouraged by custom-er feedback so far, “It is reassuring to know that we are continuing to help our customers reach their goals. And now we should be able to get them there in double-quick time.”

the MY100 comes with software that improves quality and boosts throughput.

roger Jonasson does not own a crystal ball. Nor does he believe in horo-scopes, astrology or numerology.

“When you are setting out at the start of a new development project it is impossible to know the full extent of the challenges you will encounter,” he explains. As Project Manager for the development of MY100DX, Roger did have a firm belief in his colleagues, “We had the responsibility to develop a new machine platform that would meet the future requirements of our customers. It wouldn’t

have been possible without an awful lot of very dedicated and very talented individuals.”

Something else the MYDATA project team had in abundance was product develop-ment experience. This enabled an open and flexible approach. “With so much experience in the team we were able to agree milestones and tackle problems as they arose,” explains Roger. “Using a rigid planning model was never going to work. It would have been like trying to herd cats.”

brEakiNg NEW grouND

Incorporating dual mountheads in a single machine has long been seen as the obvious solution to increasing throughput. But just doubling the dual motor rack and pinion sys-tem found in MY9-MY19 machines was not feasible as it would have proved too complex and too costly.

Extensive technical studies eventually led to the development of a groundbreaking, servo-controlled linear drive system, which promised both higher speeds and greater con-

trol. However, as a relatively new technique for this type of application, perfecting the linear motion proved to be quite a challenge.

gEttiNg oN track

A key figure during this part of the project was a mathematical engineer who provided both the inspiration and determination to succeed. “We studied the issue from every conceivable angle, consulted with suppliers and carried out countless tests,” he explains. “Finally, after a lot of hard work we suc-ceeded. And what’s more, as a result of all

PEEriNg iNto thE futurE

the time and effort invested we now have an enormous wealth of information in this area. Something that is likely to prove invaluable for the future.”

Extra iNNovatioN

Variations in running temperature invari-ably affect mechanical operation and with high-performance machines the effect is more pronounced. However, this was not an issue that the MYDATA team were about to let slip through their quality net. “The basic idea for how to keep the machine fully cali-brated, regardless of variations in running temperature, came to us very early in the process,” explains one of the key develop-ers. “It just seemed to pop up from out of nowhere. It was one of those real ‘eureka’ moments.”

Based on this idea, extensive development work eventually led to a new innovation (patent pending) called Automatic Thermal Adaption, or ATA. In overcom-ing the temperature change issue ATA delivers a three-fold improvement in axis positioning accuracy. “By automatically recalibrating ac-curacy settings in real time users never need to worry about machine temperature variation again,” adds the developer.

SMartEr SYStEMS

MY100DX includes many other new fea-tures and innovations such as a re-designed HYDRA mounthead and software enhance-ments, like Active Side Balancing. However,

roger Jonasson, Project Manager for the development of MY100Dx, drawing up new plans for the future.

the core technology underlying the new machine is a decentralized control system. Having ‘localized intelligence’ makes it pos-sible to speed up movements, enables parallel actions and improves serviceability.

This concept has been implemented in both the board handling and the magazine

control systems. But, it is with the two x-axis drives that the advantages are most dramatically illus-trated. Using a dedi-cated servo controller the two mounthead carriers are able to swish back and forth at incredible speed with as little as one millimeter of space between them.

As one of the development team explains, “It is like

having two cars, but the ‘same’ driver is in control of both cars. Everything that the first car intends to do is instantaneously known by the second car. This is what servo control gives us. It provides a fantastic opportunity

to ensure optimal mo-tion with absolute control.”

StaYiNg oNE StEP

Despite reaching the end of the project, Roger Jonasson is still thinking ahead, “There is no end goal. It is about continu-ally peering into the future, defining the challenges our cus-tomers will face and

taking things forward another step. In the case of MY100DX it just happened to be a very big step.”

And with a philosophy like that, MYDATA’s customers will not need a fortune teller to know that they will continue to receive all the support they need for a very long time to come.

it’s not only large companies that can benefit from

owning one of MYData’s innovative MY500 jet

MYNEWS #1 2008 11

Even though it is enjoying strong and continued growth, Eskilstuna ElektronikPartner, which currently

has 40 employees, is certainly not among the largest of sub-contract electronics manufac-turers. It might be expected, therefore, that the company would be looking to keep costs to a minimum when purchasing new equip-ment. Managing Director Mikael Joki sees things a little differently, however.

“Certainly price is important”, he said, “but what we really look for is equipment that will give us genuine technical and com-mercial advantages, and which will deliver a good return on investment. That’s why, when one of our screen printers failed, we decided not to buy a similar replacement, but to invest a substantially larger amount of money in an MY500 jet printer.”

Among the benefits of the MY500 which Eskilstuna ElektronikPartner found particu-larly attractive were the enormous flexibility it provides by removing the need for silk screens, its ability to control the application of solder paste on a pad-by-pad basis, and the way that it produces consistent high quality results, independently of the skill level of the machine operator.

“These attractions, combined with our commitment to using the latest technolo-gies to deliver the best possible service to our clients, were enough to convince us that we should make the extra investment in the MY500,” said Mikael, “And, I have to say that after using the machine for more than two years now, we are very happy that we made the right decision.”

thE MachiNE ProvED to bE So SuccESS-

ful that MikaEl Joki PurchaSED a

SEcoND MachiNE iN SEPtEMbEr 2007.

In practice, the machines have provided even greater benefits than had been anticipated. Particularly after its recent upgrade to work with 0.4 mm pitch pads, the MY500 allows Eskilstuna ElektronikPartner to handle boards with almost any type and combina-tion of components. This means that the company can secure profitable work that it would previously have had to turn away.

Another big factor that is helping the company to win more business is the en-hanced speed of response it can now offer to

its customers. New boards can be in produc-tion in a matter of hours, rather than having to wait days for stencils to be produced. Changes to existing boards can be accommo-dated equally quickly.

The quality of the boards produced using the machines is also outstanding. In a severe test involving 62,500 pads exclusively on 0.4 mm pitch, just two solder bridges were found. Overall, with the MY500, Eskilstuna ElektronikPartner finds that the quality of the finished boards is limited only by the boards themselves, rather than by the solder ap-plication process, as is usually the case when conventional screen printing is used.

The precise control over solder application to individual pads offered by the MY500 is also a major advantage, since it allows solder profiles to be optimised to avoid problems like tombstoning, even with the most dif-ficult of components. The need for reworking is, therefore, dramatically reduced compared with boards produced by screen printing.

Eskilstuna ElektronikPartner is also delighted to find that, with the MY500, the company’s design department has a much closer and more effective link with the pro-duction processes.

“Designs from the CAD team now go directly to the MY500, rather than having to go through the silk screen production stage first,” said Mikael. “This obviously minimises the opportunities for errors to creep in, but the really big benefit is when we need to make changes during production.”

“With the MY500,” he continued, “it’s easy for us to go back to the designers for these changes, and they make sure that the changes are optimised and properly recorded. Before we had the new machine, it was some-times necessary to make quick-fix changes on the shop floor to get a job out on time, and that was a much less satisfactory way of working.”

Other benefits that Eskilstuna Elektronik-Partner has noticed with the MY500 are the cleanliness of the boards it produces, and the ease of maintenance of the machine itself.

“Boards produced with the MY500 are so noticeably superior that some of our custom-ers now specifically ask that we use the ma-chines for their work,” said Mikael, “which is a notable endorsement of the quality it

MY500 - Not JuSt for thE big boYS!

delivers. As for us, we are absolutely delighted with the numerous benefits the MY500 is providing.”

“We have no doubt at all that, when we decided to spend the extra money on this machine rather than buy an ordinary screen printer, we made an excellent decision. For us, the MY500 is the key to increased cus-tomer satisfaction and increased profitability.”

Mikael’s final comment relates to whether he believes that other smaller companies in his line of business should buy an MY500. His answer? “Definitely not! Our machine is giving us so many advantages over our competitors that it would be a real pity to see them investing in the same technology!”

robert Göthner is enthusiastic. His career has taken him from one of the world’s giant companies via the

venture capital industry to MYDATA where he has the global responsibility for Market-ing and Sales. Göthner started his position in August 2007 and has rolled up his sleeves and taken on the challenge.

“MYDATA is an exciting company; a high-tech environment with talented and highly qualified people. I am very impressed with the company, which has developed from scratch into a world-leading enterprise through organic growth, thanks to innovative and great products.”

offENSivE iNvEStMENt

Robert Göthner now leads the team which, with a new strategy for product management, marketing, and sales, will help take MYDATA into the next phase of development.

“We have high ambitions. In the com-pany’s strategic plan there are many very concrete initiatives with substance. We are optimistic, and we can be since we are now

making an aggressive and offensive invest-ment in new products. At the same time we are looking at increasing our presence in Asia and China.”

MYDATA is now investing heavily in several new products. Generation Two of the MY500 jet printer has now been launched throughout the whole world, and Göthner says that he has great expectations that the MY500 can sell in large volumes in the next few years. Recently MYDATA’s next generation of pick-and-place machines was launched, the completely new MY100. This takes MYDATA to a new level within the pick-and-place business.

“Not only do we have a strong product portfolio, we also have a very strong focus on customer support and a tradition of offering our customers a high level of service. We will develop this even further in the future. We follow our customer satisfaction index, and it delights me that these measurements continu-ously show high figures.”

Robert Göthner has a long experience of global marketing, strategy and sales. For many years he worked for IBM making a career in sales, which eventually took him to IBM Corporate Strategy in USA. When he later returned to Sweden, several positions with international responsibility within the IBM group awaited him.

-“I appreciate living in Sweden in the winter and being able to skate and ski like a true Scandinavian.’”

Most recent and before MYDATA, Göthner spent a few years in the venture capital industry in Scandinavia.

-“It is an interesting and challenging sec-tor. Scandinavia is in a strong position with many promising start-ups within IT and Tele-com. Yet there are fewer companies that make it through commercially, even if they are backed up with venture capital. Against this background MYDATA’s development is even more fascinating. The company has succeeded commercially and has been built up with very little venture capital, which is unusual.”

bigger companies have long had the possibility to develop their own sys-tems to trace and archive data about

their products. Smaller businesses have been left with time-consuming manual routines, says Mattias Jonsson,” Product Manager at MYDATA.

“There has been a big demand for a system that is simple, small and ready to use. We are proud to soon be able to offer our customers MYTrace.”

obligatioN to tracE faultY coMPoNENtS

More and more requirements are being made to be able to securely store and trace data. Sub-suppliers to the aviation, space and med-ical industries among others must be abso-lutely secure about being able to trace printed circuit boards which are defective with faults. If you do not know exactly where a defective component is located you can become forced to unnecessarily recall many products, which obviously can be very expensive.

The obligation to be able to trace faulty components applies even if the problem comes up quite a long way into the future.

“Sub-suppliers are obliged to store trace-ability data for ten, and in certain cases up to twenty, years. Extraordinary demands are

MYtracE™ – SEcurE tracEabilitY

placed on the system where data is stored,” says Mattias Jonsson. “No-one knows what computer technology we will be using in twenty years time, still less about which software and hardware suppliers will have products on the market. Consequently data that is stored today must be able to migrate to new systems several times during a long period,” Mattias Jonsson continues.

DatabaSE-iNDEPENDENt SYStEM

With MYTrace, MYDATA solves this problem by storing the original data in an application-independent format, which does not rely on the existence of any particular database technology. MYTrace consists of two parts, a “harvester” and a “viewer”. The harvester collects data from the event logs in up to ten MYDATA machines in parallel. The harvester then extracts traceability data and writes it to a database.

MYTrace is modular and future-safe in such a way that both the harvester, the reader and the database itself can be changed in the future, without losing data that was previously stored. The fact that the system is database-independent and thereby future-safe is unique and gives the customer a safety and security without previous parallel.

MorE SEcurE Data

MYTrace eliminates time-consuming pro-cesses for the manufacturing company. MYDATA machines have previously saved data for about a month; therefore customers have been forced to regularly archive data manually, either in electronic or paper-based formats. This has also been an insecure method, since data is at risk of getting lost when a hard disc drive crashes or when the memory becomes full. This will soon be history.

Mattias Jonsson explains further:“Data that is generated from MYDATA machines is stored on a normal file server. The customer’s standard IT routines for access and backup can thus be used. What is required of the server is about 1 Gb of disk space per 20 million placed components.”

The files are stored in a robust, text-based format which is independent of propriety applications to be extracted. The harvester transfers data from the stored files to a database. This database can in turn be used by the user to access parts of the data in a user friendly interface. Response times are very short, it takes less than one minute to search through many years of production data and generate a report.

“Should the database crash there is no problem, after reinstallation the harvester will automatically build to populate the database again with data from the file server. If the file server in its turn is backed up as standard and protected in a fireproof safe server room, then yes the risk of data loss is in principle zero,” assures Mattias Jonsson.

MYDATA automation Inc. is known for innovative technology and did not disappoint at this years APEX

show. The show was held at its new location in Las Vegas on April 1-3, 2008. Excitement was high from both the attendees and exhibi-tors since MYDATA debuted two new pieces of equipment, the MY500 Jet Printer and the MY100DX Pick and Place machine.

The second generation MY500 was released in the European market at Produc-tronica in late 2007 before its release to the U.S. market at APEX. This new process of jetting solder paste eliminates the need for stencils and increases accuracy and operator

control. Its inventive process was noticed by industry peers even before hitting the show floor. The MY500 was selected to participate in the IPC’s Innovative Technology Center, and also was a finalist for the Vision Award in the Printing category.

The MY100DX is an entirely new plat-form of pick and place machines that offers new levels of speed while maintaining the high level of flexibility MYDATA is known for. The machine can place up to 34,000 CPH by using the new Dual X Drive System. APEX 2008 was the world-wide debut of this machine to the public. Brian Duffey, Presi-dent of MYDATA U.S. says “This is truly a

be. Therefore, the products we introduced at the show will further enhance our market completeness.”

The brand new MY100-DX, which sets a totally new standard for pick and place ma-chines paired up at the show with the second generation of the MY500. Of the two, the MY500 attracted the most visitors:

“We introduced the machine here in China last year as new technology, to create market awareness. Now we have officially released the MY500 to the market and we re-ceived overwhelming response from visitors. The MY500 was booked for four demo’s each day, and we quickly ran out of marketing material for the machine.”

The MYDATA exhibition presence also received a great deal of attention from the media, and several interviews took place in and around the MYDATA booth.

China is a very important market for MYDATA, being the main electronics manu-facturing base in the world at present, and the top SMT machine importer compared to the rest of the region. The Nepcon Shanghai Show is a great and well-known electron-ics event in China. Therefore the show is a great opportunity for MYDATA to show new products and market presence. We look forward to continuing to increase our growth in China.
