  • failure to respond to an injury threatens to show the injured party as either physically or psychologically incapable, which an lead to feelings of self-hatred so extreme that they constitute a real danger for the individual. (Berkowitz 316-317)

We see the three male characters respond to the injury in different ways.

  • 1) Collapse ( Dave): Consumed by the neurotic response to Trauma. Due to their inability to react to injury, the victim believes himself to be a helpless jelly-fish, a prey to anybody who chooses to step on him and a prey also to his own self-contempt. The victim is unable to discuss the traumatic event or deal with what others deem to be normal interactions.

    2) The Avenging Hero(Jimmy): What vengeance offers in response to trauma and loss is the fantasy of control. The "value of vindictiveness" is that revenge offers a "safety valve" that protects a victim against self-destructive impulses that accompany the act of being injured or insulted.

    3) The Upright Hero (Sean): abandoning ones idealized vision of their own grandeur; by disowning their prideful belief in their uniqueness and masterful control, the human victim becomes an "ordinary human being like everybody". (Berkwoitz 316-317)

  • Consumed by the traumatic even of his childhood.

He is abducted, sexually abused and never able to recover from this injury.

(The two meaningful responses are seen later through Jimmy and Sean)

  • When faced with the traumatic event of Katie being murdered, he responds battles the injury with revenge.

This is the traditional masculine heroism.

  • Seans injury is that his wife leaves him while she is pregnant. She calls periodically, but does not say a word until the end of the movie.Sean acts humbly and accepts the limits of his power. This reaction to become more human appears to be the most admirable reaction of the three.

  • **brothers*In Mystic River, the three main characters are confronted with proof of their powerlessness. While experiencing this powerlessness they are unable to prevent injury to themselves or loved ones. They respond in different ways. Their responses, are symbolic of the three fundamental human responses to trauma. (Berkowitz 316-317)

**So overcome by trauma that he sees himself as a helpless jellyfish, prey to anyone who chooses to step on him and a prey also to his own self-contempt. He can only express broken stuttering words and phrases regarding his injury in the past. These utterances are incomprehensible even to those closest to him such as Celeste.Dave is consumed by the trauma while J & S represent 2 meaningful responses to injury using revenge.

*The boys believe the man is a police officer despite not having a police car or uniform simply because he is a man using the tone of voice as if he has power.Sets the basis for the rest of the movie as none of the boys will ever be the same again.*-It makes you feel alone, you know? Hurting someone.-Dave tells Celeste he may have killed a mugger-Later we find out it was a pedophile; but Dave was reluctant to tell Celeste this because of the intense fear and disgust he feels for himself.

*-Celeste is looking in the paper for something in the paper about the mugger Dave thinks he may have killed nothing there.-Dave, lacking confidence and feeling insignificant neither tries to advocate his story or defend himself. He simply allows Celeste to think what she will, eventually leading to her stepping on him later.

*-Sometimes the man wasnt the man at all, he was the boy. The boy who escaped from wolves. An animal of the dusk, invisible, silent, living in a world the others never saw. The world of fireflies. Unseen, except as a flare in the corner of your eye, vanished by the time you turned your head toward it.-Just gotta get my head right. Catch a nice long sleep, and the boy will go back to his forest, back to his fireflies.-Dave talking to son before he goes to sleep-We can clearly see Dave has severe psychological problems and continues living a life that he is detached and separated from

*-Its weird, it took something like this to make me and him become friends again. Talking about Jimmy-Theres still nothing in the paper about the mugger.-Maybe I didnt hurt him as bad as I thought. I mean hes a mugger, hes not going to the hosptial. Katie Markum is dead, that seems more important right now.-We know, after watching the movie, that Dave actually killed a pedophile. He is still reluctant to tell Katie this because he fears that she will not believe his story.

*Celeste comes home to Dave watching a vampire movie.Dark scene again. Celeste says she was thinking about things Katie being dead, poor Anabeth and Jimmy those things.-You know what I was thinking about? Vampires. Theyre undead, but I think maybe theres something beautiful about it. Maybe one day you wake up and you forget what its like to be human. Then, its ok. Dave-You think I killed Katie, is that the kind of sense were making these days?-Even your friend Shawn asked about it.-Hes not my friend.Laughs hysterically

DAVE FINALLY REVEALS THE NAMES of the men that abducted him as a child.-Henry and George. I never told anyone that before. Those were their names. Isnt that fuckin hilarious? They were wolves, and Dave was the boy who escaped from wolves. Man did they have their fun. And no one came to help old Dave. Dave had to pretend to be someone else. Daves dead. I dunno who came out of that cellar but it sure as hell wasnt Dave. You see honey its like vampires. Once its in you, it stays I cant trust my mind anymore -Celeste, Im warning you. I cant trust my mind. I gotta get my head around it.

*-Whitey looks in Daves car and found blood in the trunk. Type-O, same as Katie.-Questioning Dave later.Dave expresses his repressed hatred for Sean. He believes him to be culpable, at least to a certain extent for what happened to him as a child.-You think I could get that Sprite Sean? Oh I get it, youre the good cop. How about a meatball sub while youre at it.-Whitey asks about blood in the trunk of the car. Type-O. Dave says the car was stolen & they should ask the people who stole it what they did with the car.

*-Celeste tells Jimmy that she thinks Dave murdered Katie. Spent the night at a hotel last night Left Dave-Shes scared of him because hes been acting nuts lately-He came home late (3 or 4) covered in blood and said he killed a pedophile but there wasnt anything in the paper. She does not confide in Dave because he is unable to explain the events that unfolded that night. In order to explain why he killed the pedophile he would also have to explain what happened to him when was abducted as a child, which is something he is incapable of doing.

*-I killed someone but it wasnt Katie. We finally find out the truth about what happened before dave came home the night Katie was murdered. Forget that, my head gets fucked up sometimes. I didnt kill Katie. Dave I wanna go home to Celeste, I wanna feel Celeste.-You admit what you did Dave and Im gonna let you live. Just say it out loud and Ill let you breathe. Admit what you did and I will give you your life.-Dave says he killed Katie. Yeah, yeah I did it. She reminded me, of a dream I had. A dream of youth. I dont remember having one.-Youd know what I mean, if youd have gotten in that car instead of me.-Dave

He only confesses because he is pressured into doing so. This shows us the weakness inherent in Daves character.-But I didnt get in that car Dave, you did.-Jimmy-We bury our sins here Dave, we wash our sins clean. Jimmy-Its like I said Dave, this part you do alone.

*Refuses to admit his vulnerability. While attempting to overcome this vulnerability, Jimmy rebels against the finite and limited nature of his humanity. His effort to avenge his daughter's murder represents his struggle to understand the events that have passed and what he interprets as a world gone mad. He fails to accept that he will be shaped by forces outside of his control

What vengeance offers in response to trauma and loss is the fantasy of control. The "value of vindictiveness," to use Karen Horney's suggestive phrase, is that revenge offers a "safety valve" that protects a victim against self-destructive impulses that accompany the act of being injured or insulted. (Berkowitz 316)

*-After Katie leaves the house and sees her dad for the last time, it is interesting that one of the last people to see her again i
