Course description:Exposing structural wood to drive workplace aesthetics and ethos increasingly defines ideal millennial office development. It appeals to a new generation of workers driven by sustainability (low carbon footprint), wellbeing and comfort (biophilia), while offering investors long-term, differentiated assets. A win-win. This presentation, given by a developer and a contractor who have worked together to build multiple mass timber office buildings, will focus on investment, demographics, marketability, design, construction methodologies all informed by a strong answer to: “WHY use timber.”
Learning objectives:1. Review factors that are driving and resulting from the rise of mass timber office building development.2. Discuss the unique challenges and opportunities associated with an exposed timber commercial building.3. Explain important design and construction processes unique to nail-laminated timber and glue-laminated timber post-and-beam structures, plus hybrid applications of cross-laminated timber.4. Highlight opportunities for market distinction that designers, developers and construction professionals can realize through the use of modern mass timber construction.5. Discuss the “WHY” underlying the timber, and how to influence project leaders on your next deal.
