On the eve of International Women’s Day, the senseless killing of a 23-year old lady, Cheredy Kate Gustava Nuwuses, last Saturday night at Swakopmund, sent shockwaves through the community of Swakopmund’s Mondesa suburb and community

members once again voiced their strongest condemnation, regarding violence against women.

In a bid to reduce the steep Swakopmund airport landing and passenger charges, the Swakopmund Skydiving Club took the bull by the horns and sent out a clear message to the Swakopmund Municipality, to help support skydiving in Namibia before it is too late.

Repeated efforts to get these fees reduced, have fallen on deaf ears, which has resulted in a number of skydiving companies folding. But last week the Swakopmund Municipality responded favourably to a letter written last September by Derek Gey Van Pittius (Chairman Swakopmund Skydiving Club).

It was pointed out in the letter that if the Municipality could not reduce the current airport charges, then the Swakopmund Skydiving Club operating under Tandem Skydive Swakopmund, must be provided with an alternative drop zone for their skydivers and students, as they are struggling with the high landing fees and taxes.

“Go out and open your own schools”

Staff reporter

Last Thursday evening, the Walvis Bay Town Hall saw 54 of Headstart Montessori Teacher Training College’s graduates from all over Namibia come together to receive their Namibia Qualifications Authority accredited Montessori ECD/Pre-Primary, Level 5 and 6 and Montessori Primary Level 6 Teaching Diplomas.

The commencement began with a grand processional, to the music of Elgar’s ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ and the graduates were filled with excitement, as they waited their turn to walk down the red carpet, flanked on each side by their supportive friends and family.

The theme of the evening was ‘This is only the Beginning,’ as the students were

encouraged to go and work in schools or even start new schools, all over Namibia to assist the young children of our beautiful country.

Many of the graduates have dreams of beginning their own small schools in Uis, Okakarara, Oshakati, Luderitz and many other towns and villages all over the country. They will be helped in these endeavours by the college, as it believes in the empowerment of the graduates.

The faculty and staff noted that they are excited to see the development and progress of the implementation of the

Montessori Method throughout Namibia, adding that it is simply the easiest way for all children to learn.

The Guest of Honour was Ms Jacky Price, President of the South Africa Montessori Association. Headstart is a Training Institution member of the organization and Ms Price flew all the way from Cape Town for this memorable occasion. One of the other invited guests was Mr Pieter Greef, chairman of the Promiseland Trust, with whom Headstart is partnered to assist with the education of young children in Tutaleni.

Tamariskia’s potholes a nuisanceMarshallino Beukes

Swapmund’s Tamariskia residents are urging the responsible authorities to do something urgently about the potholes in the suburbs’ streets.

Saying it is not only a nuisance, but also damaging their vehicles. At last month’s public meetings addressed by the town’s municipality, the state of the roads were also aired by concerned residents and according to some residents, the municipality is giving this problem some attention, but not as prompt and effective as one would expect. The newspaper also came across an open drain hole at a blind corner in Vrede Rede Street, which poses definite danger to pedestrians.

"Our jumpers fly up to an altitude of 10 000 ft and not to another destination, plus we do not use any of the facilities of the airport such as the terminal and toilets, as we have our own Club House, which is also open to the airport passengers.

out a knife and stabbed her once on the right side of her neck. She died on the spot. The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s court this week. Bail was denied and the case was postponed until 31 March 2016.

In another unrelated incident the police at Swakopmund opened a case of attempted murder against Petrus Ipinge (35) after he allegedly almost hacked a woman to death with a panga at a Bar in Elambo Street,

also in Mondesa. According to Detective Chief Inspector Ikuyu the incident followed after an argument between the suspect and the woman erupted. She apparently accused him of stealing her shoes, subsequently breaking an empty bottle and apparently tried to stab the suspect with it. Ipinge then supposedly went to his home where he grabbed a panga and returned to the Bar, where he allegedly hacked her in the face and on her arms and chest with the panga. The victim was hospitalised

and her condition was described as stabile. The suspect was arrested.

Outraged Mondesa residents are pleading for stiffer sentences in cases of violence against women and children and also urged for more police visibility in the suburb, especially on weekend nights. “How many more innocent lives should be sacrificed before our authorities and lawmakers take some drastic action, or should we as the community take the law into our own hands?” it was asked.

up to standard, as there is no fire brigade, no air traffic controller, and they make use of a rough gravel landing strip which plays havoc with the aircraft propellors and damages the paintwork.

"Other skydiving company's have stopped operating altogether because they simply couldn’t afford the costs, or have made other arrangements, " he concluded, saying that the Swakopmund Skydiving Club is the only surviving club in the country, which has been in operation since 1974, with their world renown tandem skydiving operation manned by five permanent skydiving instructors.

The struggling Swakopmund Skydiving Club is being offered a helping hand by the Municipality who have waved the passenger charges to meet them half way in reducing unreasonable airport

charges. (Photo contributed)“Big Three” discuss Harambee Prosperity Plan

Staff reporter

At the historical first meeting of the President’s Advisory Council on Tuesday, President Hage Geingob unveiled details of the “Harambee Prosperity Plan” to his predecessors, Mrs Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba during the closed session of this meeting.

As per president Geingob the Harambee Prosperity Plan will be an acceleration or impact plan aimed at significantly reducing poverty levels, reducing inequalities and uplifting the living standards of all Namibians. He however emphasised the fact that it

will not replace NDP4. The president vowed that he will not leave a stone unturned to ensure that all deliver on the Prosperity mandate.

“I am optimistic about the future, because I stand on the shoulders of the Giants,” Geingob told the former presidents. He further noted that he and his team, during the last year, were hard at work developing an action plan for prosperity in Namibia, the Harambee Prosperity Plan and expressed his confidence that it will usher in the epoch of prosperity in Namibia. This plan, according to Geingob, is designed to have high impact and take Namibia closer

to the attainment of Vision 2030 and also complement the National Development Plans.

“We can only propel towards Prosperity, if we pull together as a united team in the same direction; therefore ‘Harambee’,” Geingob remarked.

He went on, explaining that when referring to the key promise of prosperity, it is referring to food, clothing, decent shelter, water, infrastructure development and education, to name but a few. “We want to ensure that every Namibian has access to the basic necessities of survival,” was the president’s words.

The New Equitable Economic Empowerment Framework (NEEEF) Bill, which amongst others will see newly established companies surrender 25% of their shares to previously disadvantaged Namibians, should it be implemented, is not sitting well with some disgruntled citizens.

In an online petition the Namibian Government, in particular the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, is requested to take into consideration all the constructive feedback, comments, letters and advice received from members of the Namibian Population, such as the CIF, NEF, Chamber of Mines and the NCCI, as well as the man on the street with his own small one-man business, before passing the NEEEF Bill into law in its current form.

The petition reads as follows, “Although the fight against poverty and inequality is a fight that all Namibians have to contribute to, we believe that the NEEEF will not be a solution, but a curse instead, as we fear it will have the following

unintended ramifications: 1) Near instant downgrading of

Namibia's international credit rating as happened with South Africa recently due to poor policy making

2) Sharp drop in local and international investor confidence due to the vague and ambiguous content of the bill

3) Near instantaneous national economic gridlock due to the overwhelming additional legal red tape, private sector confusion and withdrawn investments

4) Deepening of racial divides due to racially determined targeting by the National Government of a racial minority of its citizens (less than 4%)

5) Zero benefit for the vast majority of currently disadvantaged people in Namibia, with the NEEEF policies only fuelling inequality as they favour the already well connected and privileged elite, widening the gap between rich and poor even further, all of which at the expense of a small racial minority that consistently contributes to economic growth, job creation, value addition and government tax coffers already.

Unity! Liberty! Justice!”

New vet in town brings fresh ideas

Thankful Mascato Coastal Youth Choir looking forward to Overseas Tour

Donna Collins

With the growing population of domestic pets in Swakopmund, the need for more than one veterinary practice in town has been answered, with the opening of a modern new vet shop and day clinic last week.

Dr Lerica le Roux-Pullen welcomed a host of guests to the opening of her spacious Vet@ the Crossing Day Practice, which is situated in Ocean View close to the Shell Service Station, and has brought with it a wealth of experience and some fresh ideas to the town.

The young go-getting vet who said her practice opened with a "bang", completed her studies at the University of Pretoria Faculty in 2007, and notched up her veterinarian Masters last year. She has spent time consulting in the Pretoria and Johannesburg veterinary circuit, plus has lectured and assisted community veterinary clinics.

The Vet Crossing is more than just a consulting room, but doubles up as a

pet shop for dog and cat lovers who are looking for treats, toys, bedding, collars and vet recommended food - you name it. She did mention however that she will be working in close association with the Swakopmund Vet Clinic, for referrals in cases of major operations and procedures.

Dr Le Roux-Pullen also said that a meeting was held between herself, the Municipality and charitable organisations such as the SPCA and Feed A Paw last week, to pave the way forward to set up a community township clinic in the DRC, offering much needed primary health care for underprivileged pet owners.

"We would like to get masses of township animals dipped, de-wormed, vaccinated as well as provide minor treatments for sick animals, which will be offered at the lowest token fee to people in these areas who cannot afford vet care for their animals," she said, adding "The community clinic is still being discussed but will hopefully be up and running soon."

The Choir Administrator of Mascato, Ailly Namupala, has expressed the choir management and choir’s deep gratitude towards the coastal community, for the wonderful support it has given to the 2015 fundraising drive and the pivotal role it has played in taking them one step closer to their 2016 Germany tour dream in May.

“We have entered 2016 with new vision, excitement, curiosity and additionally pride to announce that it is also our 20th Anniversary! This makes us one of the oldest choirs in Namibia. The Mascato Youth Choir was established in Swakopmund in 1996 by Ena Venter, a retired music teacher from Windhoek. It offers a gateway into an adventurous new world for the young singers simply known as Mascatos. We will be celebrating this amazing milestone later in the year we will keep you posted with dates and any events we are planning. Thank you for your support over the past years.”

Namupala says each contribution thus far has been welcomed and appreciated - be it small, well wishes, monies in kind or advice toward their Germany tour fund. They are grateful for the community’s generosity, trust and most importantly its commitment to their mission.

The choir will be touring to Germany from 30 April 2016 to 15 May.

“We are looking forward to seeing old friends, making new relationships and exposing our choir members to the diversity and connections that music creates. We have had many requests, emails, and calls for details regarding the Germany tour. The itinerary information will also soon be available on our website www.mascatoyouthchoir.com and you can stay updated with our preparations on our website or alternatively on our Facebook page. During the tour we will try to keep you updated on our travels through our Facebook page. All concerts before the choir’s departure and

any other fundraising activities will also be posted soonest.”

Namupala says they look forward to your support on their last leg of fundraising. She says all donations are still welcome as they move into the last 60 days before departure.

“And we just need the final push up the hill.”

Apart from the concerts listed below, they will have a number of small street performances, market performances in and around the areas they will be visiting, there will be workshops and appearances at various schools and local authorities.

N$3 million boost for shack dwellers

Meryl Barry (Pupkewitz Foundation), Madame Monica Geingos, Clara Bohitile (FNB Foundation) and Hans-Wilhelm Schütte (Ohorongo Cement).

Staff reporter

Ohorongo Cement, the FNB Namibia Foundation and the Pupkewitz Foundation joined hands in the fight for affordable housing in the country, by pledging N$3 million to the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia, last Friday at Otavi.

A combined press release by the three parties reads that the escalating demand for low cost housing in Namibia has reached a crisis point and requires urgent assistance, not only from Government, but also from the Private Sector and assistance from every Namibian citizen.

Housing affordability has deteriorated significantly in recent years and

Namibia is currently facing multiple major housing challenges. The national housing backlog is estimated to be in excess of 100 000 units, and is increasing by 3 700 units on average per annum, the statement says.

According to the three cohorts, empathy for fellow Namibians and supporting Government initiatives were the driving factors that motivated them to join hands in the fight against poverty eradication, by supporting the Shack Dwellers Federation Namibia (SDFN)/Namibia Housing Action Group (NHAG).

“There lies great power in joining forces and when we work together, we can affect bigger change, while at the same

time, supporting Government initiatives. Initiatives like these creates solidarity,” said Hans-Wilhelm Schütte, Managing Director of Ohorongo Cement. FNB Group CEO, Sarel Van Wyk noted that, “They (SDFN/NHAG) have the knowledge and know-how and through this partnership, we support not only our people, but also our planet, while changing lives in the process.”

Ohorongo cement have committed towards the project

with an initial contribution to the amount of N$1 000 000. The FNB Foundation Holdings Trust has matched this contribution with a cash commitment of N$1 000 000, whilst the Pupkewitz Foundations has been generous to donate building material to the same value. The first lady of the Republic of Namibia Madame Monica Geingos is the patron of the SDFN. Pending the successful execution of the commitment for 2016/2017, the three partners are

committed to consider a longer term involvement.

SDFN/NHAG is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), community based organization, that aims to improve living conditions of the underprivileged Namibians, by providing its members with building loans ranging between N$ 20 000-N$ 350 000. The loans are repayable within a period of 11 years at an interest rate of 0.5% per annum.

Absalom Shigwedha

A Walvis Bay-based project on the protection of Albatrosses is joining hands with fishing vessels to reduce the killing of these birds as a direct result of industrial fishing.

The Albatross Task Force Namibia’ coordinator, Clemence Naomab, told Namib Independent that albatrosses need to be protected as they have a delayed sexual maturity (only reproduce every five years) and are slow breeders. Naomab indicated that about 22 000 sea-birds are killed each year in the hake longline industry and around 8000 in the hake trawler industry.

“Incidental mortality of sea-birds poses a serious conservation concern,” he said. Naomab said the project has come with a number of mitigation measures to protect Albatrosses in the Namibian waters, one of which is the placing of the Torline (a bird scaring rope with bright coloured streamers that is towed from a high point (8m) at a stern of a vessel before the bait hooks are released, which scares the birds away from the danger zone.

Night setting of fishing lines also helps, as many birds are not active at night.

Meanwhile, Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister, Bernhard Esau, said Namibia is in the process of acceding

to the Agreement for the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP), a multi-lateral agreement which seeks to conserve the Albatrosses and Petrels by coordinating activities to mitigate threats known to their populations.

“Cabinet has already in April 2015 endorsed our request to become an active ACAP member and we are now in the process to get approval from Parliament.” said Esau. He explained that Namibia has endorsed the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management which requires that mitigation measures for unwanted by-catch, such as sea-birds – are implemented as part of “our regulatory framework.”

Albatrosses and Petrels are long-flying oceanic sea-birds of conservation interest. Threats facing their population include fishing, pollution, habitat destruction and the introduction of invasive species in their breeding colonies.

The global Albatross Task Force was established in 2006 by Birdlife International and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in the UK, as part of the Save the Albatross Campaign and the Namibian chapter is being implemented by the Namibia Nature Foundation. ACAP came into force in February 2004 and currently has 13 member States and cover 31 species of Albatrosses, Petrels and shearwater.

Dirt ovals sets the pace for a busy race seasonnews

Report and photos Donna Collins

The first round of the Dirt Oval Club championships held at the Desert Raceway on Saturday, saw a turnout of 25 entries taking part in the kick-off event which set the pace for a busy race season that lies ahead.

As usual organisation at the track was tops, with marshals on full alert once the flag dropped, and racing fuelling the action hungry spectators with loads of action, as friends and families settled in for an evening of high octane entertainment.

Even though the Hotrod category was limited to three entries, the two front runners Frank Borruso and Leon Le Roux took the spotlight with their vibrant coloured cars, freshly re-sprayed for the new season. Who after a heated dice, finished first and second respectively.

The V8 category held its own with seven entries, and put up a good show for the crowds with Gerdt Breedt taking home the trophy for first podium position. He was given a good

run for his money by Johnny Doeseb who took second place followed in by 17-year-old Otjiwarongo school girl Deonize Swart from Otjiwarongo, who took an impressive third spot.

The 8-Valve Class competitors did not fail to excite, with Michael Behnke winning the overall trophy in this hotly contested category, followed in by Joshua Amos and Riaan Viviers in second and third respectively.

The Quad bikes opened the race event which kicked off late afternoon, and continued under the spotlight till 21h00. In this category Ernst Visser took the lead ahead of Edwin Serfontein and Frank Borruso Jr.

Organiser of the Desert Raceway Club Championship event, Lynette Roodt complemented the participants for setting the pace for the busy 2016 dirt oval calendar that lies ahead, which she said was well attended.

The next event is being held on 2 April, and is the first round of the Namibian National Championships when the guys and girls will pull out all the stops to notch up points for the championship log.

Mineworkers unifying through sport

Munkelwitz goes to Germany

Marshallino Beukes

Pool is the sport of choice, through which three uranium mines in the Erongo Region want to build good relationships and friendship between mineworkers. Last weekend saw the pool clubs of Rössing Uranium (Ongombe) and Langer Heinrich Uranium battling it out in a friendly competition at the Locker Room Sports Bar at the Dome in Swakopmund.

The competition was tough and both teams displayed great skills and talent, but at the end of the day there

can only be one winner. The team of Langer Heinrich, under captainship of Bradley Bocovic proofed to be the better team on the day and won the friendly competition 5-3. According to the two teams they are planning to host a “Tri-Nations” tournament between the three uranium mines in the near future. Swakop Uranium’s Husab mine is the third participant. A floating trophy will be at stake and pool lovers can look forward to this encounter between the three mining giants. At the end of the day relationship building and camaraderie between the participating mineworkers will be the winner, it was concluded.

No Smoking Day has been running annually since 1983. E-cigarettes are now the most popular form of support to stop smoking, overtaking nicotine gum and skin patches, researchers have said.

More than one million smokers in England used an electronic cigarette in a bid to kick the habit last year, according to academics at University College London (UCL).

They estimated that 2.6 million of England's eight million smokers tried to quit last year. Two fifths of those who tried to quit used an e-cigarette compared with 26% who used a licensed nicotine product in their attempt.

"E-cigarettes have overtaken more traditional methods as the most widely used support for smokers wanting to quit," said Robert West, professor of health psychology at UCL.

"Their impact on public health at present comes from attracting people who would otherwise have tried to stop without any useful form of support.

"We estimate that e-cigarettes have probably helped around 20,000 smokers to quit each year, that would not have otherwise."

Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, added: "Although e-cigarettes are much less harmful than smoking cigarettes, there is no doubt that more research is needed into the potential long term effects of the use of them.

"This unique study shines a light on just how popular e-cigarettes have become as an aid for smokers trying to quit and we need to listen to what is helping people the most on their path to a smoke free life."

Meanwhile, Cancer Research UK (Cruk) called on the Government to force big tobacco companies to pay a penny levy on every single cigarette sold in the UK.

Cruk said the move would raise an extra £500 million to invest into public health services and advertising campaigns.

No Smoking Day 9 March: E-cigarettes now the most popular form of support to stop smoking

It is submitting a petition of more than 16,000 signatures to Parliament supporting the move - No Smoking Day.

The charity said the decline in smoking rates is "stalling".

"Decades of work have gone into reducing the number of people who will be affected by a tobacco related illness," said Alison Cox, Cruk's director of cancer prevention.

"There has been great progress, but unless more is done, another generation of lives will be devastated by smoking.

Labour MP Sir Kevin Barron, vice-chairman

of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health, said: "Smoking still kills 100,000 people in the UK each year and increasingly the burden falls on the poorest communities.

"The Government cannot be complacent and must set bold ambitions to achieve a tobacco free future, matched with the necessary funding to make this happen.

"Making the tobacco industry pay for vital stop smoking services and mass media campaigns through a levy will help reduce the number of people smoking and save lives."

WorldwideBill Murray unwittingly breaks up bank robbery

A bank robber was apprehended in Phoenix today after stopping to talk with none other than actor Bill Murray.

Phoenix Police Chief Tom Downey spoke with local news station ABC15 about the incident.

“The man we currently have in custody apparently had just robbed a Bank of America ATM machine, ran out, saw Mr. Murray walking on the sidewalk and stopped to talk to him. That’s when Phoenix Police were able to apprehend the suspect.”

Bill Murray, who is in town visiting friends, told ABC News about the incident.

“I saw this man on the sidewalk running towards me with a bag in his hand. Then he suddenly stopped when he saw me. He asked me if I was the zombie Bill Murray from Zombieland. I told him, ‘sure, why not’. Then he started telling me how much he loved me, and how that was his favorite movie. I was polite, I told him that was very nice of him to say. Then kind of out of nowhere, police showed up and tackled the man,” Murray said. “Some people might call me a hero, but I’m no hero. The real heroes today are the men and women of the Phoenix Police Department.”

37-year-old Phoenix resident Paul Horner was at the ATM when the robbery occurred.

“I was just standing behind this guy waiting my turn when suddenly he starts busting in the ATM with all these tools,” Horner said. “He gets the ATM open and fills a bag up with whatever cash was in the machine, then he runs out the door and down the street. It happened so fast for me to be scared or even get shaken

up about it. Though what I am shaken up about is that Bill Murray is the one who stopped this guy and I didn’t get a chance to meet him.” Horner continued, “Bill Murray is my personal hero and today he was an actual hero for the city of Phoenix. What can’t that living legend do?”

Sarah Bradley, a spokeswoman for Sock It Forward, a group that provides the homeless and those less fortunate with brand new socks told ABC News that she isn’t surprised by Murray’s heroics.

“Bill Murray is always doing something amazing,” Bradley said. “I actually met Mr. Murray a while back when we were starting our cause that gives new socks to the homeless. Bill made a donation right there on the spot, saying what we were doing was incredible; he’s such a great guy. He truly cares about people and making the world a better place.”

Murray told ABC News he will be in the Valley this week staying with friends and enjoying the sites.

“This week I plan on going to a couple things with friends and then on Wednesday will probably end up at the Tempe Improv. There’s a couple comics playing there that night that I’ve been wanting to see for a while now. I might tell some jokes if I feel like it, we’ll see. I really like bartending. Maybe they’ll let me do that. Regardless, it should be a fun time for everyone.”

The robber, whose name has not yet been released, was apprehended and taken into police custody. On his person police found a gun and a bag filled with an undisclosed amount of money.

Chinese teen couple sold their baby to buy an iPhoneA Chinese man who sold his baby to buy expensive items including an iPhone has been handed a three year jail term.

A Chinese man who sold his baby online when he was 19 years old has been handed a 3 year jail term.

Their baby daughter was 18 days old when she was sold, after her parents sought out buyers on social media.

'A Duan' (not his real name) from Tong'an, Fujian province, south eastern China wanted to buy an iPhone and a motorbike with the N$54 850 he sold his baby for.

According to the People's Daily Online, he met his buyer through the social media network QQ, selling the baby for N$54 850.

The mother 'Xiao Mei' (also not her real name) reportedly worked many part-time jobs while the father spent his time in internet cafes.

Both parents were 19 when they conceived the baby and went through with the unwanted pregnancy.

They were finding their young daughter a financial burden, as they were short on money, and so A Duan was keen to sell her in order to purchase material goods.

The unnamed buyer bought the baby for his sister, who still has the child in her possession while police determine the best course of action.

He turned himself in to the police after purchasing the infant.

Xiao Mei fled from Tong'an, with the intention of starting

a new life. She was tracked down and caught by police

investigating the illegal sale. Xiao Mei reportedly told police: "I myself was

adopted, and many people in my hometown send their kids to other people to raise them. I really did not know that it was illegal."

According to the Epoch Times, she was handed a two-and-a-half year suspended sentence, and A Duan was given three years in jail.

The Chinese media has estimated as many as 200,000 boys and girls are kidnapped in China every year and sold openly online.

Ransomware infects thousands of Apple Macs The first widespread ransomware attack on Apple computers is drawing attention to a growing and lucrative corner of the hacking underworld where attackers encrypt and hold data hostage until they are paid to unlock the information.

An estimated 6 500 Macs were infected with malicious software designed to make files inaccessible to owners of desktops and laptops, according to the Transmission Project, a file-sharing software provider.

The decision to target Apple’s OS X software, which is both harder to hack and less widespread than Microsoft’s Windows, underscores how attractive the practice has become, according to Clifford Neuman, who teaches cybersecurity at the University of Southern California.

“We have seen a larger incidence of this ransomware, which is the new way that hackers are monetising their attacks,” Neuman said. “Most of it has targeted Windows machines in the past because it is the dominant architecture out there.”

Researchers at Palo Alto Networks discovered the ransomware, which they dubbed KeRanger, on March 4.

Once downloaded and installed, the bug demanded that users pay one bitcoin to decrypt the data, or about N$ 6330 at Friday’s prices.

The researchers informed Apple, which revoked a certificate that allowed Macs to download the software, and Transmission updated its program to eliminate the infection, according to Ryan Olson, intelligence director at Palo Alto Networks.

Captive DataThe number of known ransomware attacks

doubled to more than five million by the third quarter of 2015 from a year earlier, according to Intel’s McAfee security unit.

One bug alone caused more than N$ 5,002,400,000 in damages last year, according to the Cyber Threat Alliance, a group of Web-security companies.

The use of crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin also makes it easier for attackers to conceal their identities, as opposed to asking victims to transfer funds to a traceable account. “The business model is working so well on Windows that, when they had an opportunity to do so on Mac, they did it,” Olson said. “It has been effective to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars a year.”

The new attack targeting Macs follows Apple’s recent tussle with the US government, which is seeking help from the company to decrypt information on a terrorist’s iPhone.

Apple is pushing back, saying that it needs to keep strengthening the security of its devices to protect customers even if it means rebuffing a criminal investigation.

The Hyundai Tucson returns The next-generation of Hyundai’s compact SUV, featuring a new engine and tech, but a familiar new name, has launched. Here is what you need to know.

The first-generation Hyundai Tucson was quite a sales success. It became the Hyundai ix35 with the second generation and while Hyundai South Africa does not publish its sales figures for all to see, it showed the media contingent at the newcomer's launch event how well this product has done locally. Sitting in the top three of the segment is no mean feat and goes to show how well-received the Hyundai ix35 has been in the domestic market.

For the third generation model, Hyundai has reverted back to the Tucson name. The exterior is visually striking and the car positively oozes European design flair. We would go as far as to say it is the best-looking vehicle in its segment.New enginesHyundai has joined the ranks of its competitors by offering a small-capacity turbocharged motor. This 1.6-litre turbocharged motor is identical to the one in the performance-orientated Hyundai Veloster Turbo, a vehicle that we were not particularly enamoured with. However, in Tucson application and with a re-engineered

version of the DCT ‘box, things have dramatically improved. That twin-clutch transmission was the weak point in the Veloster Turbo, but the addition of new internals plus an extra cog has meant things are vastly better.

The only vehicles on offer at launch were the 1.6-litre turbos, both in manual and DCT options. There is also a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated motor. You may wonder why there is no turbo diesel derivative, especially considering how pleasant the 1.7-litre Hyundai ix35 was. Hyundai said it is looking at bringing them in, but the new 1.7-litre motor is EURO6, meaning our diesel quality (or lack thereof) is under scrutiny. As you read this, Hyundai SA is testing this motor and if it passes, we will see an introduction of a diesel Tucson later in 2016. That engine is rated at 107kW and 340Nm, but its real strength will be fuel economy and running costs. How does it drive?Rather well, as it turns out! Hyundai recruited several European engineers who were tasked with making Hyundai a force to be reckoned with in terms of cabin refinement and ride quality. Have they succeeded? We think so, as the Tucson rides well and the lack of intrusive road noise was particularly noticeable. The engine and gearbox work well together and you have the

option of two driving modes; Sport and Eco. Sport sharpens things up a bit, but even in Eco you are never left feeling that the car could do with a bit more grunt. The motor produces 130kW and 265Nm – more than adequate outputs for a vehicle of the Tucson's size.

Our launch route took us on a combination of open roads through the Swartland, where the turbocharged motor proved capable of delivering plenty of torque for overtaking. We also traversed many kilometres of gravel and farm roads, and the vehicle was stable when driven briskly on tarred surfaces. The all-wheel drive model was particularly at home in this environment. While we spent the majority of our time in a DCT-equipped unit, we also sampled a model with a manual gearbox and found the shift action smooth and direct. Overall, the Hyundai feels a premium product from behind the wheel.

Entry/exit to/from the cabin is easy because you do not climb up and into the seats (as is the case with bigger SUVs these days) and the driving position is pleasant. The cabin feels well put together, but it is unmistakably Hyundai in that although it is luxurious, it is not quite as premium as the Koreans have made it out to be. That is not a bad thing, remember that, price-

wise, the Tucson is still under the N$500 000 barrier, unlike similarly sized German-made SUVs. You can get satnav on the top-spec model as an option, but given the fact that the infotainment system supports Android connectivity, there is no real point as you can always utilise Google Maps and besides, the new infotainment system is perfectly adequate.Quick summaryIn closing, the Tucson is an accomplished product both in terms of execution and looks. It is a pretty car, but thereis so much more to the Hyundai than just visual appeal. The rejigged DCT ‘box is excellent

and works well in conjunction with the 1.6-litre turbocharged motor. The specification is generous and the build quality moves the brand up a notch (in our books).

It is Hyundai’s finest product in its arsenal right now and you would be unwise not to give it a closer look. Its prices are not prohibitively dear either. Suffice to say if the Rand had taken less of a battering, this Hyundai Tucson could have come to market with even more competitive pricing. We look forward to giving this new Korean a thorough road test.
