Pride and belonging at Eidsvold School Over the last couple of weeks at our school assembly I have talked about what it means to be proud. I believe it is an integral part of ‘being the best that we can be’ by showing pride in who we are. A couple of simple ways of showing that we are proud is by wearing the correct uniform to school, talking with re-spect to each other and remembering that we are representatives for our fami-ly and our community.

It makes me proud to be part of a vibrant and innovative school. It makes me proud to see our teachers continue to develop into leaders. It makes me proud to see our students succeeding in all areas of their lives and it makes me proud to sit down with parents and hear about how much their child loves attending Eidsvold School.

Goodwill games I was extremely proud of the students that represented Eidsvold at the Good-will Games a couple of Saturdays ago. They were an absolute force to be reckoned with and we had some fantastic results. It is always a great day out but it was made even more special after COVID interruptions last year.

Sports News – Athletics Carnival

I am very pleased to say that yesterday we were able to successfully run our annual Athletics Carnival without any postponements or major COVID hurdles. The day had a really positive and energy filled vibe and I was really proud of all our students who attended and participated in events throughout the day. It was great to see so many students showing their team spirit and sportsmanship! I would also like to thank all our parents and community members who attended and supported our students, and a very big thank you to those who jumped in to help run the BBQ!

Overall, Flinders were triumphant on the day, taking out the total points with 1609 points. Congratulations Flinders! Both teams should be very proud of their efforts!

Twintastic!

A breakdown of Australian Bureau of

Statistics figures from 2019 reveal that for every hundred children born in Aus-tralia 1.5 of them are twins.

Amazingly enough Eidsvold State School has blown that figure out of the water.

At Eidsvold State School we have around 100 student enrolments. Taking the above figure that means that we should have on average 1 or 2 sets of twins. But in keeping with the amazing tradition that is Eidsvold State School and our ability to do things at a way bet-ter than average rate – we have 6 – yes 6 – sets of twins here at the school.

How twintastic is that?!!

Head of Department Curriculum (Primary) Mr Spencer

Head of Department - Primary

Maths Parents often want to help their kids with Mathematics, but may not be sure how to help.

Here are eight ideas that you could consider.

1) Don’t always count things in a line or from left to right. Try a circle or just a mixed up group. Al-so, count mixed groups of objects (e.g. a block, a Lego man and a ball) rather than always the same things. Mix up the colours too.

2) Play “What am I spying?” instead of “I spy”: Describe a 3D object that you can see, one clue at a time, while the other people try to guess what it is. (e.g. My object is bigger than the TV. It has smooth sides that are rectangles. It is silver. It has two doors on it. It is very cold.)

3) Get them to budget their pocket money (e.g. have a money box with four categories: spending, saving, charity and gifts). Work out how many weeks it would be before they could buy a certain toy.

4) Get the kids to work out how many minutes there are left until something happens (e.g. how long until your swimming lesson?). Both digital and analogue clocks are great for this.

5) Let the child work out the logistics for their birthday party (or dinner, or a camping trip etc.) – how many cups, plates, packets of lollies etc. for the guests… as well as the timing (e.g. everyone will be here by 4:00 so we will play games until 4:30 and then serve cake. That will take 15 minutes. Then…)

6) Plan routes on maps. Work out the total distances involved, but also talk about the traffic and whether one route would be faster.

7) When on the highway, estimate how long it would take to get to the next town given the speed lim-it and distance.

8) Budget and save for holidays or larger items. Work out a payment plan (e.g. washing up is worth $__ but mowing the lawn is worth $__). Get them to figure out how to earn the amount of money that they want. Consider incentives (e.g. every time you save $20 we will contribute another $5) or loans (yes you can borrow the $50 from us, but you have to pay us back $55).

The first three students to share one of the tips with me will receive a prize.

Have a very enjoyable and very safe holiday.

Ngara Yumbin,

It’s been an exciting end to an eventful term. Our concluding task for this semester in HASS was to create a project Museum Display on an important person relating to Federation and the students produced some brilliant work! I can’t wait to get them up around the classroom.

In English, we have created advertisements to persuad read-ers to come to our chosen destination. All students did an ex-cellent job; we definitely have a bunch of talented writers destined for the Advertising industry.

Our Science Awareness Brochures on natural disasters have turned out brilliantly too. The students have worked hard this term and should be proud of themselves.

Congratulations to everyone at the Sports Carnival yesterday, what a great way to end the term.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday! I will see you all in Term 3.

Yanande,

Exciting and Eventful Miss Hudson.

Excellent Attendance

News from the Prep Room Ms Hansen

This Term has been amazing Cora Newman

Eidsvold P-12 State School

Ngara Yumbin,

We have had a very busy term. We have welcomed several new families to our group and they are all enjoying their learning journey in our school.

The Prep students have been investigating materials in our environment in Science. They have been out and about discovering various items, naming the materials and describing the properties. They created a wind orna-ment using some found objects.

They have been discussing safe places in their HASS studies. They have considered ways to care for our special places. This will lead into the NAIDOC theme for this year around caring for and healing country.

The Preps have enjoyed hearing many stories over the Semester and are voting on their favourite this week. They have begun to recognise rhyming words in their stories, songs and Nursery Rhymes.

We have been playing games and singing songs to help us with our numbers up to 10. We love the treasure box game we call “Hot Potato”.

We are excited to compete in the Athletics Carnival. We have really embraced being in our school!

Well, we’ve reached the end of Semester 1, the halfway point of the school year and didn’t it just disappear?!

We’ve had an interesting 10 weeks over here in the Science and Mathematics room.

There have been small cardboard cars racing all around the place powered by balloons and trebuchets flinging paper projectiles from one side to the other.

We’ve had fact finding missions centred on the radioisotopes that we make use of and model seismometers measuring the forces of localised desk-quakes.

I’ve overheard discussions trying to decide on the solubility of this cation or that anion and how that relates to the number of electrons in its outer shell.

And then there’s the algebra! Picture a quiet classroom, heads pointed at notebooks focused on a string of num-bers and letters that seemingly make little sense. And then you hear the gasp. The gasp of someone who has clicked that piece of the puzzle into place as they watch the rest of the pieces tumble into place.

Its been a pleasure and an honour to spend these last 10 weeks with you students of Eidsvold State School. I’m looking forward to the next 10.

Amazing Term from an Amazing Team Florence

Ngara Yumbin,

From the learning support:

I am thankful to Mr Parter for giving me the opportunity this term to be part of Eidsvold State School teaching staff. I also want to say a big thank you to all our staff and the administration for the excellent support given to me for our ICP students learning.

Mrs Parter and I are happy with the progress our students are making and look forward to continuing next term. We know and believe that together we can make a difference in this Wubin’s of tomorrow. There will be few things happening in the learning centre so will keep you inform in the start of term.

I have enjoyed this term and looking forward to the term 3.

Have a safe holiday and see you next term.

In term2 we have had lots of new faces come to our school, but we have also said goodbye to one of our most loved staff members, Miss Graham. She has helped most of the classes during her time here with us. We should also give Mrs Graham, Mr Parter, Corey and Breanna a big thankyou for helping lots at Naidoc Day and another thank you to Breanna for helping with food and dancing on Naidoc Day. The people that danced should be proud of themselves, they did an amazing job. As you all know we had sports day this week and it was a great fun time for all family, staff, friends and students to get together.

What an exciting Term we have had in Year 1-2! This term we had a visit from Papa Bear from the story of Goldilocks. First it all started when a giant box appeared in our classroom with ‘DO NOT TOUCH’ written on it. We were all so curious. Then Miss Kerri turned up with a letter addressed to us. It was from Papa Bear. He had put all the Year 1 chairs inside the box. Apparently, Goldilocks kept breaking Baby Bears chairs and Papa Bear had decided our Year 1 chairs were perfect replacement chairs. Papa Bear then snuck back into the classroom and put an address on the giant box. He was waiting for a truck to come and pick it up. But then nothing happened for days and days and days. We put our thinking caps on and realised that the box was way too big to get out the door. Papa Bear

obviously had a problem. We decided we needed to convince Papa Bear that we needed the chairs and we would try and come up with some alternatives for him. We all wrote a story. Some suggestions were that the school could build a new chair for Papa Bear or that we could cut down a tree and make a new chair ourselves. One suggestion was that we could have a cake stall and make money for Papa Bear to buy a new chair.

Finally, we heard from Papa Bear again. He has been in our class again and read all our letters. He liked the idea of a stall and decided that he could collect some honey from the woods and sell it to make money to buy a chair for Baby Bear. The grade 1’s were happy and so was Baby Bear with a brand new soft chair.

Have a great holiday everyone and we will see you all for Term 3!

Excitement in Year 1/2 Miss Trudie & Mrs Mac

The Year 7/8 Design Tech class has successfully completed their gardening unit and are now all Bonafede budding Horticulturalists! As a result, our school garden is full of a variety of vegies that we have grown from seed and our handmade vertical gardens (complete with irrigation systems designed and built by the stu-dents) are planted out with a range of herbs that will be utilised in the school kitchen next semester. We have also been working with an online platform to design a market garden that would be suita-ble to grow in our conditions and at this time of the year, complete with companion planting and utilising various sustainability strategies to improve the soil and the produc-tivity of our gardens. Great job, Wubins!

The 11/12 Sport and Recreation class has wrapped up their Tennis unit….and what a nail-biting conclu-sion to this year’s whole school tennis tournament with Mr Spencer and Miss Trudy taking on Mr Parter and Mr Appo in the grand final. Congratulations! The sen-iors were encouraged by the determination and sportsman-ship of all involved in the tournament and decided to reward all participants with an impromptu pizza party. Well done to all involved.

In Year 11/12 Hospitality, we followed up with a debrief from the Indigenous Food Stall that we held as part of this year’s Reconciliation celebration. Thank you to all who attended the celebration and gave us val-uable feedback on our dishes. Our learning is always more meaningful when we are able to see a real world application and the team were glad to be part of the wider community celebration. Your attendance and participation made it all the more special for us. We have even managed to find some new bush tucker ingredients that we are keen to use again soon.

What an action-packed term! Mrs Graham’s

Every newsletter will now have a Brain Teaser for you to work on. The plan is parents, carers and older siblings can all work on the problems together to reach the correct answers. Come on, have a go! The first three correct answers handed to the office will be rewarded with one Yumbin Token: Question Term2 week10 :-

An Arab sheik is old and must leave his fortune to one of his two sons. He makes a proposition:- Both sons will ride their camels in a race, and whichever camel crosses the finish line Second will win the fortune for its owner. During the race, the two brothers wander aimlessly for days, neither willing to

cross the finish line, first. In desperation, they ask a wise man for advice. He tells them something! Then the brothers leap onto the camels and charge toward the finish line. What did the wise man say?

Answer to Week 8 Teaser: Turn on switch 1. Leave it on for five minutes. Once five minutes has passed, turn off the switch,

turn on switch 2. Now go through the door. The light that is on is connected to switch 2. Whichever of the other two is warm to
