We’ll end with a stop at a diner for pie and ice cream. At that time of year, there should be some beautiful fall foliage. Daryl’s topic for discussion at the June meetingwill be “ run-ins with the cops in our youngeryears”.

Come to learn how Daryl was involved in acountry race between a ‘57 Chevy and a brandnew Shellby GT 350 that ended at gun-point!

Penn College's Automotive Restoration Camp

Did you build a career from the skills learned in summer camp? For most of us, the answer is “no,” but for studentsattending the June 17-20 Automotive Restoration Camp hosted by the Pennsylvania College of Technology (PennCollege) in Williamsport, a few years down the line the answer may well be “Yes, indeed.”

Open to high school students entering grades 10-12, the immersive Automotive Restoration Camp presents attendeeswith an overview of skills needed to preserve and restore automobiles built prior to 1975. Modules include anIntroduction to Automotive Upholstery, an Introduction to Metal Forming and Sheet Metal Working, the FordModel T Experience, and the Pin Striping and Paint Simulator. Instead of just learning theory, attendees get to gohands-on, restoring a seat cushion; using tools to cut, form and shape a metal fender; and practicing paint work (safely)using a simulator instead of a paint booth. Students also learn the history of the Model T, before gaining experience inmaintaining the school’s own Tin Lizzie (and ultimately, enjoying a ride in the car).

Now in its second year, the Automotive Restoration Camp supports Penn College’s Automotive RestorationTechnology degree program, of which the school is justifiably proud. Not only can the school claim bragging rights forhaving the oldest continuously operating automotive program in the country, but the two-year Automotive RestorationTechnology program (which results in an Associate of Applied Science Degree) is the only one of its kind at an EastCoast school. Across all programs, the school claims a 96-percent graduate placement rate, an important considerationgiven the cost of a higher education these days.

Per Roy Klinger, the instructor who oversees the Automotive Restoration Camp, the program’s first year was a success, with two participants expressing interest in attending Penn College upon high school graduation. Though this offeringis relatively new, Penn College has hosted summer camp events for years, with most targeted to younger (middleschool) students.

As Klinger points out, “auto restoration spans a range of disciplines,” and the camp is the best way to give thoseconsidering a future in the trade a sampling of each. Camp attendees also enjoy a field trip to the Eagles Mere AutoMuseum in nearby Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania, which houses roughly 75 cars from the 1950s-’60s, and in addition tothe knowledge gained at the Automotive Restoration Camp, students also get to take home their upholstery and metalshaping projects.

Those in the school’s automotive programs have been involved with a few high-profile automobiles in recent years, including the electric-powered Studebaker used to traverse the Congressional tunnels in Washington, D.C., which wasawarded a National Automotive Heritage Award from the Historic Vehicle Association. Penn College students alsorestored the one-of-one Verrill Wolf Wagon, which made its concours d’elegance debut at 2014’s The Elegance atHershey. Both are owned by the Swigart Museum in nearby Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
