PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello everyone,
I think most Pennsylvania car clubs don’t have
much to do in February, but we have plenty to
do. Our “After Christmas” party is coming up
soon, and the club flea market is a few weeks
after that. Also, men’s breakfasts and women’s
luncheons are on the schedule. We’d like to
see you at some of these functions. It’s fun to
be with our friends!
See you soon,
Jan

E15 Gasoline
By Dick Lowe
I suspect it is inevitable that most gas stations will eventually offer E15 only and we will have
to use it whether we like it or not. So, what can we do? I have been using an ethanol treat-
ment in my Model A, 2011 Subaru, 1998 Chevy van, lawn mower & snow blower for a couple
of years now on E10 and it seems to work pretty well. Prior to that, I had trouble with my
lawn mower and the Chevy van & the Model A. The mower wouldn’t start well and wouldn’t
idle. I took off the head and found all sorts of nasty build-up on the valves, head, piston &
spark plug (even though the engine had been completely rebuilt the previous season). I
cleaned it up and started using the treatment and it has been running great ever since. The van
isn’t used very often so water from the E10 settled out on the bottom of the tank. It would
turn over but wouldn’t start. I added new gas and ethanol treatment and rocked the van to
mix up the water and then it started. The treatment has kept this from happening again. After
setting during the winter the Model A did the same as the van, so I drained out the water in
the bottom of the tank and it started just fine. I have not had any problems with the Subaru,
probably because I have been using the ethanol treatment since it was new. The snow blower
has not been a problem because I use the treatment in it and drain the gasoline each season.
The treatment I use is Lucas brand ethanol treatment because it treats 5 gallons of gasoline
per ounce of treatment. It comes in a 16 oz bottle, so one bottle treats 80 gallons of gasoline.
It costs about $10.99 ($11.76 with tax) at most auto parts stores but you can occasionally
find it on sale for less. This figures out to 14.7 cents per gallon of gasoline which may seem
like a lot when added to the cost to fill your tank but it may be a lot cheaper than an overhaul
of your engine and/or fuel system. For a 10 gallon fill-up, you would add two ounces of treat-
ment which would add only about $1.47 to your gasoline cost. At about $3.37/gal or $33.70/
tank-full, that’s only about a 4 1/3 % increase. I think it’s worth it. The lucas product claims to
work equally well on E15 but I haven’t tried that yet. Other brands may work as well and have
similar prices per ounce but may not treat as many gallons per ounce. When buying this stuff,
it is important to calculate and compare the cost per gallon of gasoline treated . Maybe there
is a less expensive product than Lucas but I haven’t found it yet. If anyone knows of a better
product or has another solution to this problem, please let the rest of us know about it.
