In the second stage there were disputed the special ones of ‘Tossa-Sant Feliu’ and ‘Els Àngels’, besides the ‘Sils's Circuit’, repeating itself in two occasions. Antonio Sainz and Javier Cattaneo do with the forecasts and with a veryregular conduction were supporting the third position of the general up to the final podium. Ferran Font and Carles Palou, in a few sections where his Escort were not proving to be so effective, were defending hisrespective positions with a few spectacular conductions, being two of the pilots most applauded by the numerous present public along the tour. Finally the Andorran pilot Ferran Font and Oriol Julià they weresupporting the second position in the Category 2 opposite to Jean Ragnotti, in whom it was the début in competition of the new Escort RS, after the test of Andorra in the past Rally of Andorra, when Font exercised as ‘car zero’. fun

Having just completed in the recent Roger Albert Clark Rally, with Phil Collins in an Opel Ascona 400 I have returned quite shattered but happy with our result. Carlisle is always an entertaining venue for a rally and it was my second visit to the forest of Keilder this year, with the added addition of snow, to this an event I enjoyed tremendously. The addition of a number of good friends such as Mark Higgins and Gwyndaf Evans added to the atmosphere of the weekend.

So – to the rally itself – The chief safety officer, Brian Avery and assistant rally manager, Graham James posted on the Wednesday before the start of the rally that their final route survey had flagged up nothing serious – Dalby was very fast and slippery and that Woodyard was in excellent condition – little did they know! When Phil and I arrived at the Pickering Stadium, North Yorkshire on the Friday, we found snow covering the whole ground – a surprise after waking to a beautiful sunny morning in Wales and having a great journey up! It has been awhile since my last foray in snow back in 2002, at the Rally Sweden, which is slightly different as they allow spikes while over here we have to stick with rubber. By the start, the snow fall was heavy and I have to say, the organisers were brilliant in making sure the service park and event all went smoothly, despite the weather. It was clear that the choice of tyres would prove the winning or losing decision for the day, and we started on snow tyres that Phil had stored for some years. Even travelling on the public roads between stages proved to be fun, with the snow coming down faster than could be cleared. Phil had not driven on snow for 10yrs and coped exceptionally well, and after 2 failed attempts at the rally previously, we aimed for a solid rally, with the ultimate aim of finishing.

Rally Day 09

The first loop around Pickering Stadium ‘ice-rink’ and Dalby had to be modified, as parts of Dalby were impassable, which was a blessing in disguise, as our choice of old Dunlop snow tyres proved to be very wise in the conditions but kept the pace low due to their age. We found ourselves languishing in the bottom section after returning to the service, so we spoke to Paul Dyers of Dunlop who advised us to go on some of their new tyres, which made a dramatic difference on the next stages, with a 5s improvement over 5 miles – and little did we know we would end up on the same tyres or the rest of the event!

Poor Mark Higgins and Dale Furniss, in their Ford Escort RS1800, had a miserable time, ending up 19th as they had only brought up DMACK gravel tyres, which proved extremely slippery and totally unsuitable in the conditions. Gwyndaf Evans and John Millington faired even worse on their tyre choice of Pirelli, ending up 24th by the end of the day. Phil and I ended up in 9th overall and second in class, slightly over a minute behind Rob Smith and Shaun Gorman in their Vauxhall Chevette.

October Newsletter - Fun In the Snow Issue: 11

Dear Customer

With most of the championships and events now over for this year, our thoughts naturally move to how to do better next season, what we can improve on and the way we can make the car go quicker. Few of you put yourselves at the top of the improvements list, yet time off work due to injury ensures less ability to pay for your competing and precious points lost in championships while you heal. With the increases in safety legislation now being enforced we all need to take a look at our helmets and check they are still in good condition, straps are still well attached and there are no knocks on them. Damage is not always seen and yet, this is the one piece of kit that protects the brain. I also highly recommend the HANS devices – they protect you from violent shunts and impacts, and means you are more likely to be able to walk away from an impact unhurt, get back to work and return for your next competition.

I hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter and good luck with your post season preparations.

My Blog

Thank you for your kind thoughts on my recent foray in the Roger Albert Clark Rally. As requested, I have written a more in depth review of the rally below, which I hope you will enjoy. Currently, I am busy preparing for the Autosport International Show now that my rallying season is over. My stand will look slightly different this year, as I will be present as both NG Motorsport and Stilo, so, if you are going to be there, keep your eye open for me and come and see what I have at the show this time.

The challenges of rally competitionsAfter working hard to bring my night skills on tarmac back up to scratch, it was a great disappointment to have to retire from the Cilwendeg rally so soon after the start – but sometimes even with preparation the car just doesn’t play fair, and Steve Davis and I were forced into retirement before we had even settled into the event. It was great to see so many familiar faces and a number of ‘names’ from rally supporting the event. I am only sorry Steve and I were not able to put on a better show for the crowds.

The Wales GB – and to next season

The 66th WRC Wales GB has now finished and with it the end of an era – the last FIA World rally event for the current generation of turbo-charged, 2 litre vehicles, which we first saw in 1997. That year I was co-driving in the rally with Colin, our first Wales Rally GB together, in the Subaru Impreza WRC 97, for the 555 Subaru World Rally Team and my irst year with Colin. We won that rally and ended up second overall in the championship, under Tommi Makinen, with Subaru taking the manufacturer’s title for the third consecutive year. Great car and a great way to end the 1997 season. The following three WRC Wales rallies were dominated by the late Richard Burns and Robert Reid, who now takes the mantle of the MSA’s Performance Director. I am pleased to announce that he selected me as the MSA National coach co-driver for the Team UK scheme. I will write more on this next month

Interview with a Single seat racer

Next year, the S2000 will become the WRC cars, powered by 1600cc turbo engines, and based on the current Super 2000 cars, with the new turbo and rear wing kit additions. It has also been decided that these kits will have to be removable and within a set time limit, which the FIA still haven’t announced.

To add to the challenge, the Pirelli tyre supply contract has come to end and they are moving across to the F1 scene, so the regulations have been amended to allow both Michelin, to supply all the factory teams, and DMACK, whose tyres are manufactured in China, to supply tyres all the other teams. The overall aim is to reduce the overall costs and open the door to new teams to be able to afford to enter the championship,

The new rules will certainly not suit the smooth, neat driving styles as it will be more about grabbing by the car by the scruff of the neck and throwing it into the corners. It will be very interesting to see who emerges as the new style of driving star, as I think the current champions smooth driving style will be challenged next season by some other up and coming teams.

The return of the Prodrive team with the new Mini WRC with Kris Meeke as one of the drivers, will add to the spice of next year’s WRC. The Mini WRC was launched at the recent Paris Automobile Show, and is powered by a 1600 litre, four cylinder D turbo charged engine. The team is to enter 6 of the 13 scheduled rounds in 2011, leading to a full season in 2012. Prodrive have also announced that they will have additional Mini WRC cars available for customers to compete in with independent teams. Tantalising or a lot of us!

Focus Function to start the Wales Rally GB

Ford’s rally drivers from the last 12 years all gathered together in Cardiff Millennium Stadium before the start of the Wales GB, to celebrate the tremendous success of the Ford Focus RS World Rally Car, with over 173 entered events in the WRC. Next season the Focus is to be replaced with the Fiesta WRC, which conforms with the new rules. Among those who attended were Marcus Grönholm,Jari Matti Latvala, Mikko Hirvonen, Petter Solberg, Francois Duval the current Ford driver line up, Loius Moya, Fred Gallagher, Thomas Radstrom, Danny Sola, Simon Jean-Joseph from the S1600, Stefan Preval, to name but a few.

Those from over the years who were involved with the Focus WRC

I was honoured to be in the car on its debut in the 1999 Monte Carlo Rally with Colin behind the wheel. It was a strange year - winning the Safari Rally on only our third event, followed by a further win at the Rally Portugal immediately afterwards and, then not finishing another event all season. Colin and I loved the Safari Rally and it remains one of my favourite of all time. I was really pleased to see the old car we won the Safari Rally in 1999 at the Cardiff stadium’ it brought some great memories back.

The affection people have for the Focus is immense, with people travelling from as far as the Caribbean to be there and I was surrounded by so many people reminiscing over their Focus. Malcolm Wilson, M-Sport and BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally team director, and my good friend from the days when I was his co-driver with the Ford WRC team also attended. He has overseen the building of every Focus rally car from the

first foray with Colin and I to the final Rally in Wales this year. Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila, as well as team mates Mikko Hirvonen, took the Focus RS WRC out for the final time, with Jari-Matti and Mikka coming in third and Mikko Hirnonen and Jarno coming in fourth after having a steering problem.

As Requested - The Roger Albert Clark Rally – My final rally of the year and a good mix of snow to add to the

Phil and I ended up in 9th overall and second in class, slightly over a minute behind Rob Smith and Shaun Gorman in their Vauxhall Chevette.

Saturday was no less eventful with a modified Oliver’s Mount stage, which had to shortened to take out the

hairpin, which was too slippery, and allowed the crews a short blast up the hill and across the top of Oliver’s Mount. It was extreme slippery as none of the sections across the top had been gritted. This was a stage not to lose but wasn’t one to win, as the snow covered tarmac and steep drops kept the overall pace down. The Langdale stages were reduced into two short runs – another loop of Oliver’s Mount and Langdale followed by a major route change across, for the route north to Hamsterley, due to Miiddlesborough and Sutton bank being closed with the weather. After these stages, we then had to head south towards York, working off a loose time schedule. Due to the better road conditions we got to Hammsterley 4th car on the road and 2nd in class. The quick decisions of Colin, the event race manager, made this route the original distance which worked well, and by the time we got to the southern edge of Keilder and Shepherdshield we ended up 1st car into service for day, checking in 20 mins before anyone else. This meant we were back at the hotel at a reasonable time, with some of the crews not getting in until after 1am. Mark and Dave had also made up good time finishing in 7th overall after their dismal finish on the first day. Gwyndaf and John also changed tyres, and made a huge leap from 24th on the Friday to 5th overall.

Roger Albert Clark Rally 2009

Sunday morning we set off for Scotland and the forest of Ae and Twiglees, where there was little report of snow. Our choice of snow tyres on front and narrow gravel on the rear worked perfectly in these stages, and by the time we had negotiated the Heathall loop stages we came out with our 4th place still secure. The service park at Newcastleton was moved to the Newcastle racecourse, as the service crew had been unable to make it out of Edinburgh. However, by the afternoon, the second stages in Newcastleton were opened, even though reduced to two loops, as enough marshalls had arrived to cover the route. Conditions in Newcastleton were heaviest to date, which proved to be the downfall of Rob Smith in his Vauxhall Chevette, when he came off along the straight and needed to be dug out. By the end of the day and with temperatures plunging to -7̊C, we finished in 2nd in class and 5th overall.

A lot of hard work was done by the organisers to get a route for Monday, as the original stages in Keilder were completely impassable due to the heavy snowfall. So, as a compromise, the organiser’s found a new 5 mile stage in Kerslope. I am sure that if the organiser’s had questioned the drivers on the Sunday night, they would have found that all of them would have been happy to stop the rally there! However, Colin wanted to give everyone value for money and worked some magic to make sure the Monday stages were passable and we could rally.

With a finish on Sunday in a very close position to 3rd and 5th, Phil and I made the decision that despite the tantalising challenge of rallying for position, the conditions kept our focus on our original decision to finish above all else. Paul Griffiths and Sam Collis drove an exceptional last stage to finish 4th ahead of us with Darren Moon and Malcolm Smithson coming in 6th, behind us.

All in all a great weekend of rallying and I must give a huge thank you to Brian Avery and the rally manager, Colin Heppenstall, as well as the hard working crew, for keeping the rally going, making last minute changes and ensuring we all had a fantastic time. They handled the challenges of the weekend with quick thinking, solid decisions and effective delegation, to make sure we all stayed out for some superb rallying.

For all Co-Drivers…Co-Driver Semina Update

Co-Driver Seminar December 13th……The places for the co-driver seminar filled extremely quickly and there were a large number who were not able to attend the December date. I am looking through my diary for February to see whether I can find another date to fit those I disappointed. If you are one of those people, I will be in touch shortly to let you know what I have managed to sort out.

For those attending in December, one of those who has taken up a place, is not only a co-driver looking to improve their skills but also a journalist for Motorsport News. They are going to support Sean Moriarty, the editor in the writing of a piece on the day about co-driving and the training day, so keep an eye out for that issue of Motorsport News. I believe it will come out the first week of January.

Stilo News

As I have written quite a bit about the Roger Albert Clark rally I thought it would be more interesting to give you a bit of fun, to keep you all occupied during this snowy cold weather! Stilo helmets can be found on a quite a number of championship winners this season, with Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena probably leading the list. Stilo and I am trying to put together a list, which I will be showing on my stand at the Autosport International Show for everyone to see just how many of our champions choose Stilo as their preferred choose of helmet. I thought it would be quite fun to see if you can find those champions, and match the names and number of people who have won their championship, as Stilo helmet wearer’s, with mine. If you are unsure whether a champion is wearing a Stilo, have a look on my websitewww.nickygrist.com and the full list of helmet designs is under the heading Stilo. You can check your results when you visit the stand and see whether you have found more than me – I challenge you! Alex Sabater is one of the director’s and was competing alongside us in the Roger Albert Clark Rally, I teased him about rallying on slippery surfaces, such as snow as a novel experience for him before the rally – little thinking we would be immersed in snow the whole weekend.

For your part Ferran Font and Oriol Julià (Ford Escort) were qualifying in the third position of the Category 2, sixth absolute. These cars will be able to compete in a habitual way in the contest from 2012. The rally was consisting of two stages and ten timed sections, adding a total of four hundred eighty seven kilometres of tour, of whichhundred forty eight were corresponding to the speed sections. On Friday evening / night there was disputed the first stage composed by two tours to the sections of ‘Cladells’ and ‘Collsaplana’. After these two sections the pilots of team ASM Motorsport were occupying the third (Sainz-Cattaneo), the fourth (Font-Julià) and the seventh (Palou-García) position of the general when on returning to Lloret de Mar, adding in addition an extraordinary second tour by Collsaplana when more complicated when the pilotage was due to the dampness in the road, where they were obtaining the best third, fourth and fifth time. The unit constructed by ASM Motorsport possesses specifications of Gr4 FIA, with the engine BDG, the change ZF and all the technical characteristics that allow the maximum competitiveness.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this newsletter. Over December, I will be busy with preparations for the Autosport International, and getting the brochures and stock ready, as well as answering your calls, so am looking forward to the Christmas break

Until next month,

Yours in Motorsport

Nicky Grist
