Area Co-Ordinator’s Pace Notes…from David Holmes

I am hoping to relax a bit now as I spent most of my last week at home sorting the HRCR Awards Dinner at Hellidon Lakes. There was the last minute requests for tickets and rooms, all of which were accommodated, and then shuffling and reshuffling the 16 table plans to ensure that all of the 132 guests sat with those they wished. The evening passed very well although tinged with sadness following David Stokes losing his final battle with cancer on the Wednesday. I had seen David at the Open Day and he was typically full of fight to do as much as he could in the time he knew he had. I had had several telephone calls with him and his wife Sue over the last few days as the Stokes entourage for the Dinner grew in number as he wanted it to be a celebration—and so it was—a celebration of his life, his passion and spirit in his motor sport career spread over the last fifty odd years. This was endorsed when Sue and Guy Weaver had a standing ovation on collection of the Old Stager award.

Mike Sones did his usual excellent job of steering us through the many awards that were presented for the various Championships and the evening ended revelling to the Steel Weasels into the small hours. The AGM that followed on Sunday morning probably had the most members attending for some time, with at least one other N&B member, who approved the accounts and the Club’s new constitution—reworded to bring us into the 21st century—my re-election and the election of three new committee members… Andy Ballentine, Kevin Baldwin, and Simon Mellings.

I look forward to this new blood helping HRCR continue into a successful 2016/7. We have had a very good start to the year, membership wise, with over 100 new members since the Open day.

Hopefully a few of you will attend the annual Race Retro at Stoneleigh Park—always a good place and time for you to meet friends and fellow competitors—usually in the coffee shop in Hall 3.

I’m guessing, as there is yet another Celebration of Life, that of the late great Henri Toivonen, there will be on display his 1981 RAC winning Lotus Sunbeam—which used to be housed at the David Sutton Motorsport Museum, an Opel Ascona or two and a host of Lancia 037s and Delta S4s. It is thirty years since he and his co-driver Sergio Cresto sadly perished in an S4 on

the Corsica Rally in 1986—which directly led to the banning of Group B cars. Silverstone Auctions have a Competition and a Classic Car sale over the weekend and have listed a host of racing and rally cars from a 1954 Speedwell A30, a Replica Jolly Club Integrale, Matt Edwards Mk2 BDA to David Stokes’s Mercedes Transporter Motor home.

HERO are hosting their Retro Classic Tour from Stoneleigh to Bicester Heritage and back, on the Saturday and I know that Paul Boscott and Lynda have entered their Lotus Elan… which I saw for the first time when marshalling last Wednesday on the RMC 12 car rally—festooned with spot lights… hope they have a good run… And get back before they need to switch them on!

Last month we were pleased to meet new members Phil and Jackie Walker who brought along their MGB GT. It was too dark to see it properly in the car park, so many thanks to Phil for sending us this photo.

As I am missing this month’s (and the next) meeting I am indebted to Andrew Bodman for hosting this month’s “Photo and Memorabilia” evening. I hope you all have a good time swapping memories and banter, and I look forward to hearing about it in due course.

Travel safe…

Being nearly a month earlier than last year, but with the calendar being published at the same time and the CAMS office closed for its usual Christmas break, we had four weeks less than usual to get the event organised. Everything has been done at the last minute—this was exacerbated by the fact that we were unable to get into the forest or talk to the foresters in November/December as the early bushfires prevented this.

I believe we have everything in hand and, as I write this ten days before the event,

we already have 31 entries with a maximum field of 40. I’m looking forward to next month when I can start work on preparations for my own competition year. This seems to be concentrated mainly into the month of May, so that will be busy, too.

I hope you don’t mind us re-using the cover photo from a previous edition (August 2002)—it is interesting to look back…after all, we are a Historic club. I’ve grabbed this photo from that edition too—chance to see what Glad gets up to when I’m at work!

Thanks to the c o n t r i b u t o r s of the articles and photos in this month’s n e w s l e t t e r and to Monica for making it happen. Till next month, from Down Under—

Additional chassis set up and geometry work was carried out by Q Prep of Oundle.

So, there it is—I’m going to miss the gravel events which, for one reason or another, are not for me at this time and, assuming the docs give me the green light, that’s the plan.

If not, my Escort will be up for sale !!

A scenic tour for classic cars through Leicestershire,

Rutland & Northamptonshire

Sunday 14 August 2016

The Rockingham Motor Speedway is a modern

motorsport venue on the outer edges of Corby and

is Europe’s fastest racing circuit. It is also the only

high-speed banked oval in the UK and unique in its

quadrilateral shape. Rockingham has 13 configurations

of track, which can be used for anything from touring

cars to motorcycles to rally cars.

The circuit is overlooked by the 6280 seat Rockingham

Building, a steel-framed, glass-fronted grandstand

building containing suites, offices, bars and kitchens,

and by four grandstands. Together the building and

grandstands offer a total seating capacity of 52,000.

Welland Valley Wanderers will start from the main

building where breakfast rolls, tea and coffee will be

served.

The lunchtime halt will be on the banks of the Welland at

Stamford in Lincolnshire. Proclaimed by Sir Walter Scott as

“the finest stone town in England”, Stamford was declared

a conservation area in 1967. It has over 600 listed buildings

of mellow limestone in the town centre including five

medieval churches, all real gems.

Stamford’s prosperity was drawn from the wool trade

and its historical position as a mail coach inter-change on

the Great North Road almost halfway between London

and York. The town boasts 11 churches, 30 pubs, 20

restaurants and over 10 quality hotels and guest houses.

Stamford has formed the backdrop for television costume

dramas such as Middlemarch and the 2005 film Pride &

Prejudice.

Drayton House has been a family home for almost a

thousand years. The core of the house built by Simon

de Drayton about 1300 still survives, but the house

is especially important for the transformation it had

during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The house

has a unique spiral cantilever oak staircase of c.1680

and a superb embroidered State Bed of 1700. The house

passed to the Sackville family in 1770, but only two

rooms were changed, being redecorated in the Adam

manner. The house, therefore, still reflects its medieval

origins and the taste of the Baroque period, and remains

very much a family home. We are extremely lucky to

finish the event here, as the Parkland is accessed via a

private drive, away from passing traffic. We hope to

have afternoon tea for finishers at Drayton House.

Start ing from Troyes , the c i ty of a thousand colours, just south east of Par is, we gather on Saturday 10 th September for a pre-ral ly meal, scrut ineer ing and signing on where you col lect a l l your road book informat ion and meet your

fe l low compet i tors for the week ahead.

Sunday then takes you south through the vineyards of Burgundy, an area of great beauty which is studded with grand châteaux. Regularities throughout the day explore this fine region finishing in the region’s capital, Dijon, of mustard fame, where perhaps a bottle of fine wine may be in order?

Monday’s regularities run us across the Loire valley and then up into the Monts du Madeleine. With stunning scenery and some challenging passes to climb, this will begin to test the crews and their cars as we head on to our hotel in Clermont Ferrand for a good night’s rest.

Tuesday brings the big guns, now onwards and upwards into the Massif Central. Here the mountains get higher, the gorges more spectacular and we push on over the Volcanic Mountains of the Auvergne, across the Gorges de la Truyere and south towards Millau for our night halt.

Still want more? Ok then, Wednesday is the day for breathless scenery, challenging cols and full on rallying. We are now heading East to the Cevennes and through the amazing Ardeche region. Here we have everything a rally crew could dream of: spectacular forest roads, twisting ribbons of scenic gorges and terrific mountain climbs. Having driven over the best parts of the Massif Central, a well-deserved rest at our hotel near Valence sets you up for the Grande Finale tomorrow.

Thursday is our last day of rallying, but don’t relax just yet. With all to play for, the final day gets

us into Monte Carlo Rally territory. Into the Rhone Alpes we take on some of the classic passes over the Alpes du Dauphine, Massif de Pelvoux and finally north across the Chaine de Belledone to our destination for the finish line in Chambery.

This Savoyard city will be the place where we host our magnificent prize-giving dinner and with a week’s sport to talk through you can expect a long evening at the bar in front of you. Recalling tales of derring-do and “wrong slots” the party goes on as long as you can!

Join us for what promises to be the most exciting and challenging classic rally of 2016.

If the full on challenge is not for you, then why not join our touring event? Still following the same amazing route but without the pressure of timing and map reading, all noted in a fully detailed, easy to follow road book, you can still be part of this great event and enjoy the excitement but at a more leisurely pace.

At £2650 per crew of two including ferries, all hotels, evening meals, all rally road books, maps and instructions and the prize giving finale, it’s a week of great value motorsport.Details at www.classicrallytours.com

• Have to get to your controls before car 0, so you still get to enjoy the navigation and timing elements.

• Giving something back to the sport (Andrew mentioned this one too). We enjoy competing and we have had quite a lot of help from various people, particularly when we started, so this is one way of paying back.

• Events cannot run unless there are marshals, not because of MSA regulations (unlike stage events) but because someone needs to do the timing and/or passage checks.

• It’s good experience to see what it’s like from the other side. All competitors would benefit from doing some marshalling (and indeed should do it) and all marshals would benefit from competing.

As many of you know, as well as competing, John and I often volunteer as marshals on road rallies—on both Simon Rossiter’s CRT classic car rallies and local 12-car rallies with the Mercia group of car clubs (Loughborough, Coalville, Rugby).

And I’m sure most people reading this will know that road rallies are quite different from stage rallies, these days. The idea is not to go as fast as possible, so the safety and spectator aspects are not so important. The aim of a regularity rally is to be ‘on time all the time’ on the right route, and to obey the rules of the road. That’s not to say that there are not times when it is necessary to ‘press on’! In fact, when marshalling on night 12-car rallies which are timed to the minute, it can be quite exciting when multiple cars arrive in the control together and need to be given their time, the next handout and depart at the same time too.

Anyway, here are some of the reasons why we marshal on road events.

• Involved in the event. If you can’t compete, then marshalling is the next best thing—you are taking part and most competitors are well behaved and grateful, unlike some spectators on stage events!

• No entry fees to pay. Some events may pay some expenses, but most don’t, so you still need to be prepared to buy petrol, refreshments, etc. and we have never made anywhere near a profit on any event.

In last month’s N&B Newslet ter, Andrew Bodman wrote about the process of qual i fy ing as a Stage Ral ly marshal .

Are there any down sides? Of course!

• Depending on the event and time of year, you may get cold and wet, or hot and sunburnt, or bitten by midges, etc.

• On longer events, the marshals are the first out of the hotel in the morning and the last to arrive back at the hotel in the evening.

But the bottom line is: marshalling is a great way to take part in and enjoy road rallying!

The Engineering ColumnCrew Communicat ion

In September 1939 the Royal Air Force entered the second world war wi th very few high performance aircraf t and most aircraf t had more than one crew member. At that t ime the crew were of ten c lose together and inter-crew communicat ion could be

performed by a tap on the shoulder and a shout in the crew member ’s ear or by a speaking tube known as a Gosport Tube.

It soon became apparent that, for a crew to function effectively, good voice communication between all crew members was vital, just as it is today. By the time the four-engined bombers entered service, crews were spaced too far away from each other for anything other than electronic communication to be effective. An A1134 intercom amplifier was a standard fit and, such was the importance given to crew communication, this was a standalone amplifier powered from its own set of dry batteries, independent of the aircraft electrical system for reliability.

That amplifier, although quite a clever design for its time, was just an amplifier of the crewman’s microphone which fed the headphones of the rest of the crew, rather similar to intercoms in today’s rally cars.

The human voice has a limited frequency range that is needed for intelligible speech, whilst the ears can hear a much wider range of frequencies, at least in a young person. Also, the voice does not generate a constant amplitude. To aid intelligibility it is normal practice to electronically manipulate the voice components in several different ways

The most important function, in my opinion, is to compress the voice peaks and amplify the troughs to produce a more constant output, although surprisingly, many intercom amplifiers do not have this function. Filters are then applied to the signal to cut out distortion that may have been produced in the compression stage and to limit the frequencies passed by the amplifier to those required for maximum intelligibility. Even the simplest of intercom amplifiers these days will have some form of filtering.

These functions would, until recently, have been performed by analogue circuitry, but as signal compression and filter requirements can be expressed mathematically, digital signal processing (DSP) can be used very effectively and can be applied adaptively to suit the particular noise and signal environment. Intercom Amplifiers using DSP are expensive and they will also include interfaces to communication radios, phones and audible warnings. But perhaps the most useful feature of DSP is that it can also be used in a noise cancelling mode to reduce the effect of in-car noise. This has been used in aviation for several years. It works by feeding the noise signal picked up from an in-car microphone into the wanted signal, which will also contain the noise, but in anti-phase so cancelling most of the unwanted noise.

from John Dowson

continued on page 9

A WW2 Tale

John’s talk of communications in aircraft during WW2

reminded me of stories my

parents told me concerning

their wartime experiences.

My mother, Val, was in the navy, but attached to the fleet air arm, where she was a radio technician working on communications in planes aboard aircraft carriers. (As an aside, her brother was in the air force and spent his entire service on board boats—a very contrary family!)

As is often the case, pilots complained of radio faults when in the air which miraculously disappeared when the plane was on the ground (or on the carrier). Val spent many an hour as an extra crew member aboard a single-seater, laying on the floor between the pilot’s feet fiddling with the radio while the pilot manoeuvred the plane to try and show her the problem.

Nick Complex Function Intercom

The A1134 amplifier was part of standard communications

equipment used in British designed and constructed aircraft (such as the Avro Lancaster and GAF Lincoln bombers) during WW2

But what about reasonably priced practical systems?

As far as I am aware, there are no common standards for rally intercoms, which inevitably means that there are considerable electrical differences between headsets and helmet sets from different manufacturers, so it is always a good plan to go for a complete system from one manufacturer. Microphones are particularly susceptible to damage and should be kept clean and dry. Remember that with a boom mounted microphone it needs to be positioned in front of the mouth for maximum voice pickup and not allowed to droop to neck level. Most microphone booms are adjustable in friction settings, so spend some time and set them up properly.

Connecting leads from helmets and headsets take a lot of abuse and should be inspected regularly. Attempting a repair in the car is rarely successful and quite often makes the proper repair more expensive. Attempting to get out of the car without disconnecting the jack plug is an excellent way of damaging connections.
