Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Friends,
On Friday the 22nd of November, the College
Community celebrated the 2019 Valedictory Dinner
– our last significant school event for our 2019 Year
12 Students.
The night was a beautiful celebration for our senior
students and their families – and gave us the
opportunity to farewell these amazing young men
and women as they move into the next stage of
their lives … I shared the following sentiments with
the guests …
It fills me with a great deal of pride to be standing here and speaking to you all on behalf of all those
who have cared for our fabulous Year 12 students throughout their time at NSC.
Tonight’s valedictory is a celebration of our Year 12 students - a chance to reflect on the past six years
and a chance to look towards the future. Graduating from Year 12, having completed your VCE or
VCAL is a brilliant achievement – congratulations and well done!
In time, we trust you will look back upon your time at Numurkah Secondary College with pride and
satisfaction regarding the friends you have made, the battles you have both won and lost, the experiences
you have enjoyed and the most important success you have achieved. For some of you, success in the
coming months may be measured by qualifying for university, getting into the TAFE course you have
applied for, gaining paid employment or even embarking on some form of travel. Regardless of what
your endeavours may be, the future is yours to take advantage of, to make a difference and to seize the
great opportunities which are yours for the taking.
For us, as your NSC champions, your teachers and your supporters;
success is about you making a valuable contribution and having a wonderful life,
success is about you finding fulfillment and happiness,
success is about you being surrounded by loving family and friends,
success is about you feeling satisfied with your career pathway, but more importantly feeling proud
of how you serve others,
success is about you achieving a goal that you know you have set and worked on and accomplished,
success is about you standing back and being proud of what you have accomplished as a student at
Numurkah Secondary College.
Our wish for you as you embark on adventures far and wide is that you – have no regrets and that you
strive to make a positive difference in the lives of all those you meet.

Object Based Learning—University of Melbourne The Year 8 students who were interested in exploring Ancient Civilisations further were offered another Melbourne visit to the OBL labs at the University of Melbourne. Students explored Nefertiti’s tomb with VR goggles, looking for different gods and goddesses painted on the walls in the tomb. During a tour of the new OBL Vet Science lab, students were shown various bones and cross sections of animals. The afternoon activity had students work in teams to classify objects they found in their archaeological dig; recording, classifying and reconstructing objects they had found. Students were then encouraged to form conclusions about what the objects found on their site said about people who had lived there in ancient times.

The excursion to Melbourne was a great experience. We learnt lots of new
thing to do with ancient Egypt, Greek pots, tombs and ancient goddesses/
gods. All of this happened in a museum lab at the University of Melbourne.
We also looked at a new zoology study room that was full of preserved
animal body parts such as bones, hearts, skeletons, mummified animals and
much more. We also did object based learning activities including holding
pots that are centuries old, designing our own sarcophagus lids, painting our
own masks, writing on papyrus paper and designing our own Greek pots.
We were very grateful for the opportunity to do the object based learning
excursion and we are looking forward for the chance to go next year. - Savannah and Caitlyn
Our Year 7 students under the guidance of Peter Kam and Jessica Edwards also headed off on
20th November and below is some of the feedback we received from them.
On our trip to the University of Melbourne we learned new information about Ancient Egypt and humanities in the form of object based learning. First we were given a brief introduction to the University then we went through to the history museum to learn more about Ancient Egypt and specifically Ancient tombs and pottery. We learned about the age and purpose of the pots in the tomb, along with understanding what Egyptian gods were on the walls. We then learned about how the ancient Egyptian culture evolved, while looking at some replicas and real ancient pottery. As an extra we went to the zoology labs to look at animal biology. Then we went to a workshop to do fun art activities to do with Ancient Egypt. We then concluded our trip to the University of Melbourne. By Devlin Duncan, Caitrin Harrison, Hannah Grigg
In Melbourne on the 20th of November we learned about Ancient Egypt for the
whole day at The University of Melbourne for object based learning. I saw a
picture of a girl naked and we saw a video clip about King Tutankhamun and
where they lived. I held a vase from the ancient times. I really enjoyed it,
it was really good. By Jorga Wakefield
YOLO Day On Friday 29th November we held our annual YOLO day
event. Our theme this year was “Brilliant and Resilient” and
our activities centred around challenging students to step
outside of their comfort zone to try new things and
overcome obstacles, in order to build resilience.
We all heard from guest speaker Warren Davies from “Love
me, Love you” about different challenges that he had
faced in his life, and he gave great advice to everyone
about how to manage difficult times and mental health
issues that we may face in our lives.
Each year level group then participated in a range of fun activities led by staff
and outside agencies such as: Sports aerobics, The amazing race, Art Therapy,
Sport, Cookery and Dance. Groups learned more about the “Love me, Love
you” program, mental health, drugs & alcohol awareness, and taking care of
yourself, through some workshop sessions.
Mrs Corazza’s cooking group prepared a lovely healthy
lunch of fruit and muffins, which was gratefully received
by all.
Our final guest speaker of the day was Mrs Kim O’Keefe, former Mayor of Shepparton,
who also shared personal stories of resilience as well as advice on the importance of
being positive and never giving up.
YOLO stands for “You only live once”…. but perhaps what we should say is: “We only die once, we live
everyday”.
We encourage everyone to take every opportunity that
comes your way to develop personal skills, qualities and
positive mental health. Obstacles will come along, but if we
approach them with determination and the support of those
around us, we can overcome these and be successful in
whatever we choose to do in our lives.

Textiles Report
Year 8 students this semester have been experimenting with Batik fabric techniques and
incorporated this into their pillowcase or boxer shorts project. From general patterns to
names and even a cow were managed using this technique. Students are currently
working on learning some basic soft toy making skills through a softie task.
Students in Mixed media have been working towards designing and constructing a bag/
container for a specific purpose of their choice which has to use at least two different materials.
Items they have constructed include a leather wallets with metal components, a storage
container for crochet wool and tools, a makeup bag with acrylic mirror insert, a cane and raffia
handbag, timber and fabric handbag, a feather and fabric purse and a Sinterklass sack which
will make use of metal eyelets for a cord to run through. Lots of challenging learning happening
in these tasks.

NSC Facebook Page You may have noticed this little chap if you follow us on the Numurkah Secondary College Facebook page. Let us introduce Elfie to you. He has been very busy and today he was involved in a meeting with students helping to plan subjects for next year and at lunch time he helped the 2020 Year 12 students with a fundraiser. All this week he has been busy with events happening at NSC.
WELLBEING
At this time of year many young people experience
issues with their mental health due to factors such as
exam stresses.
We encourage all parents, carers and families to be
vigilant with their children, and enable them to seek
support if needed.
Over the next few newsletters we will be including
useful fact sheets which provide information on signs
to look out for and how to best support someone
experiencing issues with their mental health.
