Dear Friends,Throughout 2016 we will be celebrating 50 years of service to the community! This milestone is remarkable as we recognize the progress and accomplishments of the past and look to many years ofservice in the future. I hope you will take a look, mark your calendar and join us for some of the wonderful events we have planned. Please see page 12 for details. As we enter the New Year, many people try to make positive lifestyle changes. Some of us are concernedabout the gradual weight gain over the past year (or years), some are concerned about noticeable mentaldecline, and some are just ready to get a little more positive energy in our lives. See FREE workshop onpage 28.Let’s start with nutrition. You have all heard, we are what we eat. My daughter recently got me startedon a fitness App where you track what you eat as well as your physical activity. It has really been an eyeopening experience as I have never really counted calories. It has become pretty clear that you can eatalmost as much as you want of fruits and vegetables, but start putting carbohydrates in the mix and thecalorie count rises dramatically. I also discovered that I don’t get nearly enough potassium. Insufficientpotassium can lead to high blood pressure. Although I have always thought I am a pretty healthy eater, this new information really forces me to make better choices. We all know that exercise is good for us and is probably the only “magic pill” out there. There are somany options for a more active lifestyle. The NSC offers classes, the fitness center, and of course thepool. There really is something for everyone. Even if walking is your exercise of choice and you don’t feellike going to the mall during the winter months, you can add a lot of steps to your day by walking thehallways here at the Center. When you join in an activity at the Center, you have the added bonus ofmaking new friends.According to the Alzheimer’s Association, adding interaction with other people and mentally challengingactivities to your day may result in a 25% improvement on mental aptitude test scores. One of the bestways to get optimal benefits is to dance. There is the mentally challenging component of learning newsteps or following a partner, it is clearly a physically challenging activity and of course there is the wonderful social component. There are a few dancing opportunities at the NSC: jazzercise 5 days a week, line dancing and the Let’s Dance group. There are so many opportunities available in our community. The key is to find something you enjoy andto stick to it throughout the year. Have a very Happy and Healthy New Year.Join us for our 50th Year Anniversary CelebrationKick Off on January 6th – all day!

WHY SHOULD I PRE-REGISTER? - Often, in thenewsletter, you will be asked to register at theReception Desk. It is important that you do so forseveral reasons.1. We sometimes cancel a class/trip due to low registration. If you are interested and do not signup, you might miss out on a class/trip that you areinterested in.2. If a class is cancelled and you are not registered,we can’t call you to notify you of the cancellation. Then you come to the Center and are disappointedthat you have made the trip for a cancelled class. 3. Instructors will often ask us for a number of registrations. This helps them to prepare for theclass and make the appropriate number of handouts. 4. Room assignments might be able to beadjusted to accommodate a smaller or larger group, but this too depends on the number of registrations. ~Thank you!

FITNESS CENTER CORNERAny new goals for the New Year? 1 in 3 people set resolutions every January, but six months later, onlyabout 46% of them are still on target with their goals.A common resolution is weight loss. If that one is onyour list, let me offer a few ideas to help make achange. Start with a baseline weight. Write it down anddo one weight check per week (don’t obsess over it,but be conscious of where you’re at). Weight lossmainly has to do with your diet so you will most likelyneed to decrease your daily caloric intake. The bestway to make sure you are getting the right amount ofcalories per day is going to be a food journal. It maybe a pain to keep but once you write it all down, youmight realize where your problem areas are.Myfitnesspal.com is an awesome resource for calorietracking and also incorporates an exercise component.Remember, weight loss takes time but the benefits ofbeing at a healthy weight are endless. So stick to yourgoals, work hard and you will be rewarded!~ Contributed by Marci Mantegna, Fitness Center Site Manager,CardioKinetics

ARE THERE ANY VALID REASONS TO BELIEVE?(PART 3; NEW TOPICS)Wednesdays, January 6th-20th (6 sessions total)1:00pm – 3:00pmPresenter: Dr. Gerald CulleyTraditional faith is not in fashion these days. Themedia are filled with skepticism toward the Bible. We hear that a book compiled many centuries agomust be riddled with myth, legend, folktale, andoutright fiction. To think that it’s a reliable sourceof history is naïve, and to make it the basis of a personal religious faith is pure folly. This is the 21stcentury: an age of practical politics, personal computing, and social networking! But did you know…A hard look at this ancient bookreveals that it is historically accurate, archaeologically supported, and scientifically sound! No cost. Please register at the Reception Desk.
