Dear Friends,I want to share a story that I often tell when giving tours ofthe Center to new members and other visitors.

Shortly after the NSC moved into its new home at the current location in 1996, one of the members was a little dissatisfied. At that time, the library was also the fitness center, home to 2 stationary bicycles, and the classroomspace. He really wanted the library to be the library. Hespoke with the director, Margaret Catts, about his wishes forseparate spaces at the center and told her that he was goingto leave some money to the Center. She graciously thankedhim but did not really have high hopes that much wouldcome of it.

After his passing the NSC was the recipient of a major portion of his estate. This provided funding for the first addition tothe NSC in 2001. This addition included the Education Wing, the Fitness Center, the lounge and the first expansion of thekitchen space. This generous supporter, Warner Perry made sure that the organization he loved was more prepared toprovide opportunities for seniors in the future.

His vision proved to be a good investment. Since 2002, the fitness center has received over 200,000 visits, the educationwing has hosted over 150,000 visits from members who have enjoyed a wide variety of enrichment and educationalofferings. The first expansion of the kitchen and subsequent addition have helped us serve more than 900,000 meals tothe homebound and seniors in our community. And, the library is the library!

Estate gifts have made such a difference to our Center over the years. I believe that the support from our community inthe form of bequests and donations has transformed the Newark Senior Center into the wonderful community treasurethat it is today.

*If you are a volunteer at the NSC I invite you to join us. We will recognize the very special volunteers who share theirtime and talents with us on June 23rd at our Volunteer Reception.

Enjoy the summer,

We will be unveiling something special at the VolunteerReception!

WHY SHouLD I Pre-reGISTer? - Often, in thenewsletter, you will be asked to register at theReception Desk. It is important that you do so forseveral reasons.1. We sometimes cancel a class/trip due to low registration. If you are interested and do not signup, you might miss out on a class/trip that you areinterested in.2. If a class is cancelled and you are not registered,we can’t call you to notify you of the cancellation. Then you come to the Center and are disappointedthat you have made the trip for a cancelled class. 3. Instructors will often ask us for a number of registrations. This helps them to prepare for theclass and make the appropriate number of handouts.4. Room assignments might be able to be adjusted toaccommodate a smaller or larger group, but this toodepends on the number of registrations. ~Thank you!

Are THere AnY VALID reASonS To beLIeVe?PArT 2Wednesdays, July 29th – September 2nd 1:00pm – 3:00pmPresenter: Dr. Gerald CulleyTraditional faith is not in fashion these days. Themedia are filled with skepticism toward the Bible. We hear that a book compiled many centuries agomust be riddled with myth, legend, folktale, and outright fiction. To think that it’s a reliable source ofhistory is naïve, and to make it the basis of a personal religious faith is pure folly. This is the 21stcentury: an age of practical politics, personal computing, and social networking! But did you know…A hard look at this ancient book reveals that it is historically accurate, archaeologically supported, andscientifically sound! We will continue our exploration of these paths in asecond six-week series, with further topics, beginningWednesday, July 29, 1-3 pm. Attendance in the spring session is not requiredand the material in this course will be differentthan the material presented in that session.About the Presenter: Dr. Gerald Culley holds a PhDin Classics (with historical emphasis) from theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill andtaught at the University of Delaware since 1970.
