Dear Unit Popcorn Kernels
My favorite time of year is almost here- Boy Scout Popcorn Season! Now is a great time to start your planning and organizing for the
Fall sale. Selling popcorn is the biggest single revenue source for most units who sell. It is also an important contributor to the
operations of the Green Mountain Council as well.
We’ve learned a few things over the years about making your unit’s sale a big success:
Start your planning early- Schedule a unit popcorn kick off night. Get your leaders oriented as to their role in supporting the sale.
Plan for how you will communicate popcorn news to your families.
Set a goal- If your unit sold popcorn last year, think about how you can make this year’s sale bigger and better. Often this is as
simple as getting every Scout involved in the sale.
Make it fun- Your Scouts are in the program to have fun and learn new skills. Selling popcorn can be a hoot and prepare Scouts
for important life skills! Leaders getting pies in the face by top sellers. Special prizes and recognitions for Scouts who
achieve their sales goals. Popcorn at your kickoff event. These are just some of the ideas that will keep the focus on fun.
Please plan to join us for unit Kernel training at one of the sessions organized in your area. For experienced unit Kernels, many parts
of the Fall sale will be familiar from prior years. However there are some important and “need to know” changes for 2017 that will
help your unit increase sales, streamline some of the paperwork and get you prepared for a great sale. Your Scouts will still have a
great selection of prizes. Your Troop or Pack will earn the same percentages as in past sales. Deliveries will be very similar to how
they have operated in the past.
Our goal remains to make this sale as fun, easy and successful for your unit as possible. At the unit Kernel training, we will give you
everything you need to enable your Troop or Pack to fund your entire year of Scouting! So that you have the most up to date
information about the sale, it is essential that every unit has representation at one of the sessions. The training sessions are listed on the
Timeline.
Laurie Sneed, Popcorn staff advisor and I will be available to you throughout the sale for any questions or issues that come up. Let’s
crunch, munch, pop and enjoy our way into the most successful year of Scouting ever!
