HSIE FacultyYear 9 Geographers Study The Tweed Community’s DevelopmentOur Year 9 Geographers are currently studying the local community and how its character has changed over time. Students recently visited locations in Tweed Heads and Coolangatta. They learnt about the naming of Point Danger and Mount Warning, shipping tragedies whilst crossing the Tweed River bar, surf-lifesaving and beach radio-days, the town-planning impact of the border fence, the rise and demise of the railway from Brisbane, the importance of tourism to the local economy and of interesting characters such as Jack Evans and his porpoise pool.

Students are currently writing up a report on their findings. Thanks are extended to Mrs Myers, Mrs Rowe and Mr Christian who accompanied the students and myself on this excursion.

English FacultyPoetry Recital Evening16 September 2014‘Poetry is simply the most beautiful, impressive, and widely effective mode of saying things, and hence its importance.’ Matthew Arnold

This week, 31 students from Stage 1 to Stage 6 engaged their audience with recitals of their chosen poems, in our annual Poetry Recitation Finals.

Their very supportive families and other members of the audience enthusiastically listened with breathless expectation as poems as varied as brief comedies to darker themes, were delivered with aplomb and appropriate register. Indeed, the students’ outstanding ability to communicate, proved Matthew Arnold’s point, to the delight of listeners.

Stage 1 finalists Stage 2 finalists

‘Most people ignore most poetry because most poetry ignores most people.’ Adrian Mitchell.

Our younger recitalists certainly proved that poetry does not ignore most people. Humorous poems about food, parents, and animals entertained the audience and caused many parents to take a new look at this thing called poetry (and their children?).

Between each Stage presentation, wonderful musical items were performed by Lindsey Nolan, Joel Hawkins and Jason Storey.

As we moved through to the older students, the diversity of poems chosen became much more visible. What a breadth of talent was evident in all students, in their ability to select and recite their chosen poems. Stage 4 students offered the audience poems ranging from decisions at a video store, to the challenges of human suffering, to a humorous glance at the creation of mankind.

Left: Stage 4 finalists Right: Stage 4 winner Indiana Marshall

Perhaps the most difficult group for the adjudicator was Stage 5. Again, here we heard poems that confronted our emotions as well as our intellect. These poems illustrated the sensitivity and social conscience of the students and it is a credit to them that they chose meaningful poems, that were recited very effectively.

Left: Stage 5 finalists Right: Stage 5 winner Hannah Roberts

To conclude the evening the audience was treated to outstanding recitations from Year 11 and Year 12 students, that included both traditional and more modern poems.

Left: Stage 6 finalists Right: Winner of Stage 6, Jordi Kitto

A special mention must be made of Jordi Kitto’s recitation and, indeed, his public speaking skills earlier in the year, where he was also winner of the Stage 6 Public Speaking competition.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Poetry Recitation competition, including those many students who did not reach the finals but who showed the commitment to participate and enjoy the delights and challenges of poetry in all of its forms.

We were very grateful to Mrs Bryanne Jardine who adjudicated the finals; to Mrs Suellen Walker for coordinating, adjudicating and managing the event from start to finish; and to the many other members of staff who helped in this competition. Thank you to the parents, grandparents and staff who attended the finals evening, providing a very warm and encouraging audience for our fine students.

Neville Erskine, Director of English and History.

Visual Arts FacultyThis term Year 9 Art students attended an exciting workshop by local artist Susan Gourley. During the workshop students explored and experimented with a variety of art techniques such as solvent transfer, carbon/graphite paper transfer, paper stencilling (paper cut out) and collage/mixed media. The aim of the workshop was to inspire students by further developing skills that relate to developing their understanding and meaning to the notion of ‘Fantasy Art’ and alternative mark making. The day was a lot of fun and students created some imaginative and intuitive drawings.

The workshop was so successful that Year 11 students will participate in a similar workshop with Susan Gourley in Term 4. If you would like to learn more about Susan’s work or the workshops she will be conducting over the holidays at the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Centre, please visit her website http://www.susangourley.com.au.

Miss Hope and Mrs Nash attended a Teachers Day at Griffith University where they explored studio Portrait Photography. They learnt about

lighting and camera skills to create dramatic and emotive photographs. Earlier in the year, Mrs Nash and Miss Hope also attended a

Photoshop workshop, learning skills to incorporate into the new Digital Media unit for work for Year 9 Visual Arts. During this unit

of work students will explore darkroom techniques, digital photography and appropriation in a new, fun and dynamic

way to create contemporary work.
