BAPTISM: Prior registration for parents and sponsors is re-quired for Baptismal classes. Class is held monthly prior to baptisms. You will need a copy of the baptism class certificate and the child’s birth certificate for baptism. If you have any questions, please call the office. Baptismal classes are held at 5-7 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month. Two sessions will need to be attended to complete the class requirement. Your support to the collec-tion provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious for-mation, as well as other programs to help share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. Please give generously.

Expectations have a habit of trip-ping us up. We think we have it all figured out. We know what to expect. But then something happens to surprise us and we have to decide whether to believe it or not. Is this for real? The folks in Nazareth had expectations of their native son. This “son of Joseph” couldn’t possibly be the Anointed One, could he? God has a habit of surprising us, of defying our expectations.

POVERTY FOR US IS A FREEDOM Saint Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) thought so. There was a beautiful article about her in Time magazine. She was asked about the materialism of the West. She said, “The more you have, the more you are occupied, but the less you have the more free you are. Poverty for us is a free-dom. It is a joyful freedom. There is no television here, no this, no that. This is the only fan in the whole house…and it is for the guests. But we are happy. “I find the rich poorer,” she continued. “Sometimes they are more lonely inside…The hunger for love is much more difficult to fill than the hunger for bread…The real poor know what is joy.” When asked about her plans for the future, she replied, “I just take one day. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not come. We have only today to love Jesus.” Is there anyone in this room as rich as Mother Teresa?

REJECTION AT THE PEARLY GATE A cab driver reaches the Pearly Gates and announces his presence to St. Peter, who looks him up in his Big Book. Upon reading the entry for the cabby, St. Peter invites him to grab a silk robe and a golden staff and to proceed into Heaven. A preacher is next in line behind the cabby and has been watching these proceed-ings with interest. He announces himself to St. Peter. Upon scanning the preach-er’s entry in the Big Book, St. Peter furrows his brow and says, “Okay, we’ll let you in, but you will have only a cotton robe and wooden staff.” The preacher is astonished and replies, “But I am a man of the cloth. You gave that cab driver a gold staff and a silk robe. Surely, I rate higher than a cabby.” St. Peter responded matter-of-factly: “Here we are interested in results. When you preached, people slept. When the cabby drove his taxi, people prayed.”
