WORDS FROM OUR SHEPERD

Thank you for the get-well cards, notes, letters, phone calls and emails I have received the last two weeks following the corrective surgery on my right knee. It reminds me

of what great people you are and why I am happy being your pastor. Also, I would like to thank Frs. Oleksiak, Wisniewski and Kyara for presiding these past two weekends.

Being off the last two weeks recovering has been somewhat difficult for me. After my knee replacement surgery last November, I started physical therapy immediately. With this surgery, my surgeon basically wanted me to rest my knee in order to help the healing process. I have been wearing a knee immobilizer which has prevented me from bending my knee.

Missing Mass the past two weeks has also been difficult. Just when all of us began returning to church and getting somewhat comfortable, I had to take these weeks off. I really missed being present and partaking in the Eucharistic celebration. There was something important in my life that was missing. I can imagine that is how those individuals who have been home bound for a longer period of time feel.

I wish we could all gather again as a community of believers, but with those who are not able to attend Mass because of illness, age, the pandemic, lack of transportation, etc., we have come up with a partial solution. After hearing

that the Corona virus is not going anywhere soon and also wanting to keep in touch with those who are unable to attend Mass, a video system with audio has been installed for those who are homebound. It should be available in the next few weeks. As soon as all of the staff is trained in the usage of the system, we will start live streaming. Keep reading the bulletin and checking out the OLG website for further details. Have a Blessed week! Fr. Bill

SALVATION God labors for us so that we might work for him. Gently, the Lord encourages us to take up the cross of our baptismal initiation and follow Jesus. This encouragement takes many forms tailored to each o four weaknesses and strengths. By pushing us, encouraging us, and helping us, the Lord points us toward the goal of salvation. Jesus seeks us out; he pulls us toward him by many paths. Be quiet and feel his tug! Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2001, OCP All rights reserved.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When an altar is dedicated, the Rite of Dedica on directs that, if possible, the relics of a martyr be mortared into the church floor under the mensa, or “altar table.” Up un l this revised rite, the general prac ce was to include small relics of saints in an altar stone, a slab of marble that was normally set in the altar itself. Today’s rite states a clear preference for “martyr,” and for a substan al part of the body, in accord with our tradi on’s desire for substan al symbols. Martyr, of course, means “witness” in Greek, and was the tle given early on to the people who by their death imaged the death of Christ. From the beginning, there has never been a shortage of such people, although it took a while for the Church to develop a process to declare someone a martyr. Saint Augus ne tells how it was done in the fi h century. By then, popular opinion didn’t count as much as an official tribunal set up by the bishop of the place where the martyr suffered. A er the inquiry established that the person did indeed die for the faith, a metropolitan bishop had to ra fy the decision before a shrine could be built or an altar set up over the martyr’s tomb. For the most part, the honor paid to a martyr (called a “cult”) was restricted to that diocese, although the fame of some heroes spread so much that they were celebrated elsewhere. The age of the martyrs is now, and more people died for the faith in the twen eth century than ever before, witnessing to Christ to the end. Their sacrifice remains “the seed of the Church.” —Rev. THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY—SEPTEMBER 8 We know that everyone has a birthday. The Bible doesn’t say anything about Mary’s birth, but we know that she was born. Like all parents, Mary’s parents—we call them Joachim and Ann—probably took one look at their newborn daughter and knew that she was special.

Joachim and Ann loved God very much, and they were filled with gratitude to God for the gift of a child. They raised Mary as a child of God, teaching her to love and serve God. When the angel Gabriel told Mary that she had been chosen to be the Mother of Jesus, she already had great faith in God. Her strong faith and trust allowed her to say yes to God’s plan for her. We cannot be certain what the future holds for any newborn infant, but we do know that the life of each person has meaning and purpose. When Mary was born, the world did not know who she was. Sometimes others—and maybe even you—don’t see how special you are. Maybe you forget that God is calling you, too, right now, to do what Mary did—to bring Jesus into the world.

When we celebrate his mother’s birth, we honor Jesus too. Today thank God for the gift of life, and give honor to both Mary and Jesus by showing respect and concern for one another—remembering that God has created each person with love and with a call to something very special in life.

SAINT PETER CLAVER (1581-1654) September 9

Nearly two hundred years before the Declara on of Independence proclaimed “that all men are created equal,” two hundred fi y years before the Emancipa on Proclama on mandated an end to slavery, three hundred fi y years before Mar n Luther King’s “I Have a Dream,” and four hundred years before the elec on of an American president boas ng African heritage, Peter Claver le his na ve Spain behind to volunteer for the Jesuit missions in Colombia. There, he was horrified both by slavery as an ins tu on and by the inhuman brutality inflicted upon the slaves. He solemnly vowed to become “the slave of the slaves,” and lived that vow heroically for close to forty years. Not knowing their language, Peter began his ministry among the slaves by using the universal language of prac cal charity, providing medical care and a tangible though wordless asser on of their human dignity: “We spoke to them not with words but with our hands, kneeling beside them, bathing their faces and bodies, encouraging them with friendly gestures” (see Liturgy of the Hours, Volume 4, p. 2018). Then came evangeliza on and bap sm. Holiness as human wholeness: Peter Claver’s enduring witness. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
