Writing in Fr. Foley’s absence, I thought I might try to tackle the issue that underlies the current peaceful protests and civil unrest going on in our country.
What began with the murder of a human being has resulted in calls for discrimination and violence against minorities to cease. In some cases, as you are aware, these calls have turned violent where property and even persons have been harmed. Can we find a way out of the discrimination, prejudice, and bigotry and stop the violence that has ensued? I would like to share with you a brief story that may lend itself to some perspective on this issue. My senior year at Marquette University I was a resident advisor (RA) in one of the residence halls on campus. One cold January night I was on duty (this means that it was my turn to be on shift watching the building to maintain its security). This particular night a homeless gentleman came into the lobby presumably to get warm. The procedure in a case like this was to call Public Safety (the campus security) so they could come and escort the person to a shelter. I put in the call and the dispatcher’s first question was “what race is he?” In response to the question I answered, “human.” This answer confused the dispatcher for some reason, but I stood by my response because what a person looks like has nothing to do with the need to be warm on a cold winter’s night. I mention this story to say that it is my belief that until we get away from the term ‘racism’ we are forever doomed to fully, or in part, commit the sin of bigotry against another person because of their culture or eth-nicity. We are all one race: human. These surveys that ask us to mark down false categories that would seem to divide the human race create a consciousness in our minds that, because of what we look like or where we are from, there are different ways we ought to be treated. Jesus transcends culture. There are good aspects and bad aspects to every culture and Jesus would have us shed the bad aspects (sin) and promote the good aspects (holy) so that the human race is strengthened and the bonds between human beings can be more like family than strangers. As with all things in the spiritual life, we need Jesus’ grace to get us to holiness. Let us pray for the grace, pray to see the grace and cooperate with it so that discrimination, prejudice and bigotry may cease, and love and harmony may prevail in the human race.
Fr. Andrew
