Under the protection of the Mother of God, we are a faith community called by the Father, energized by the Son, and moved by the Spirit to unite in

witnessing and proclaiming the Good News.

We share in friendship, gather in worship, and do proclaim our desire to minister, welcome, celebrate,

Dear Parishioners, I am old enough to remember the Hostage crisis of 1979 when the American Embassy in Tehran was seized. The news would begin with, “Day 13…Day 14…Day 15 of the hostage crisis. This

continued for 444 days. I feel a bit like this. It has been 9 weeks since the Stay at Home order was given and, like you, I am counting the days and weeks. Day 63 is now upon us and I, as pastor, am longing to see the people of God gather around the Eucharistic altar. The Church teaches us that the Eucharist Liturgy on Sunday is the source and summit of our faith life and we must be honest in recognizing that on-line Masses are not a true substitute for the People of God gathering for Mass. For the time being it is what we have. In this we can pray together from a distance, hear the Word of God, and worship Christ present under the forms of Bread and Wine. This is not insignificant but, much like Zoom family gatherings are not then same as being together, we are not doing what God asks us to do. It is helpful to remember that in many parts of the Catholic world, the Eucharist was not available to our fellow Catholics on a regular basis because of a shortage of priests. For example, in the Amazon region many communities would see a priest only two or three times a year. When you are struggling please unite yourself with those for whom separation from the Liturgy is normal and comfort yourself that in the future we will be together at Mass again. As pastor I am aware of many parishioners who have come down with COVID 19. I am aware of at least one (and possibly two) deaths. I also hear from parishioners who have had members of their families who have become ill. I share this because I also know that we have parishioners who are unaware of any illness. One asked me recently if I thought this was as serious as some are making it. It is. The evidence is also that many people can become infected without symptoms and others can be infected and symptoms arrive several days later. All of this means that if we gather too early, even for Mass, we could risk infecting others. None of us wants to do that. At the same time I hope the church can open soon. Currently we can do funerals (with less than ten people) at a funeral home but not in our own church. Currently we cannot allow people into church for private prayer, even if social distancing is maintained. As a pastor, I find that very frustrating. So I hope we have some opportunities to pray together but I also want to keep my parishioners safe. In this I follow the directives of the Archdiocese of Chicago. In Christ,

Father Mike
