Dear Parishioners, I would like to begin with a personal observation. Two weeks ago we received from individuals a couple of complaints about adding Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the names of the deceased. As it was presented to me we shouldn’t pray for (one of them said, ”honor”) her be-cause some of her decisions were not correct from a Catholic perspective. This past weekend I received some concern from parishioners about praying for the health of the president because of the “type of person” he is.

While these were public comments of only a few, my guess is others may have similar thoughts. So let me clarify a few things. Praying for someone is not the same as honoring them. We pray for people whether we mention them or not. The Eucharistic prayer prays for all the dead. We say, “For those who have died in the peace of Christ and all the dead whose faith is known to you alone.” Everyone is entrusted to God – saint and sinner. In the pew, individuals take time to pray personally for their own loved ones. The policy here at OLOW is we add a name of a deceased public official of dignitary when the President of the United States designates the Flags to be flown at half-mast throughout the country. In my 9 years as pastor this has included the following: President George H.W. Bush, Barbara Bush, Sen. John McCain, Chief Justice Anton Scalia, Nancy Reagan and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Some died while President Obama was in office and some died while President Trump is in office. I think we missed mentioning Rep. John Lewis, although we did lower the flag. What we do is non-political. I used to be pastor of Saint Thomas the Apostle in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. Everyone knows it is very progressive or liberal com-munity. After 2000, I noted it was probably the only neighborhood in the country where the Republican candidate could come in third place during the 2000 election. Al Gore received 89% of the neighborhood’s vote, Ralph Nader received 7% and George Bush received 4%. Yet when the 9-11 tragedy occurred and we gathered for prayer both the following day in Church and then that weekend at Mass we publically prayed for President Bush who had such a difficult job. Everyone bowed their heads to pray for the President. Most did not vote for him but I do not believe anyone was thinking that because they didn’t vote for him or because they strongly disagreed with him, that he didn’t deserve our prayers. We pray for the president because he is our presi-dent. I realize that only a couple expressed concern and I think they were well meaning. Yet Jesus told us to pray for everyone, even our enemies (and we should not think that all those we disagree with are enemies). He prayed on the Cross to forgive those who were putting him to death. Saint Paul tells Tim-othy to pray for “all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.” He was speaking in part about Nero who would persecute Christians. When we can no longer pray without letting our politics determine who is “worthy” of our prayers, then we should end the façade and no longer call ourselves Christians. This does not mean we compromise values. It does mean we follow the Lord. Thanks to all who are participating in the Virtual Dinner next weekend. Thanks also for your support of the raffle. Your contributions make all the difference. It will be different but we will broadcast the winners that evening. Thanks also for your support of the Baby Bottle effort. WE must do all we can to support the Women’s center. All of us must do our part to help others in need. In Christ,

Father Mike

You can email your order to [email protected] Magnets can be dropped off at your home or available for pick up at the church office. If you happen to be at church and want to pur-chase a magnet or cling, they will be available in the office as well. We are asking $5.00 for each.
