Dear Parishioners, In the month of January, the church reminds us in a special way about the dignity of human life, especially the life of the unborn. This is because it was in January that the decision of the United States Supreme Court, Roe V Wade, was promulgated. As Catholics we believe that we must work to protect and promote the dignity of all human life from conception to natural death. This includes women and men, children after birth, those who are marginalized due to disabilities, the elderly, and those on the margins such as the homeless and those feeling violence. In January, however there is a special emphasis on the dignity of the unborn. Last weekend our Youth Minister, Christine Collins, led a group of young people to the Rally for Life held in downtown Chicago. This Sunday, I will be participating in the Respect Life Mass for this year. It will be at Saint Michael’s parish at 5:30 PM. All are welcome to pray with us. Next Sunday afternoon, the Movie UNPLANNED will be shown by our Respect Life Committee, with the support of the Knights of Columbus. All are welcome to attend and indeed encouraged to do so. The movie, however, is not appropriate for younger children because of the sensitive nature of the topic. I also want to thank the many people who have signed up to participate in the Spiritual Adoption effort. This effort of prayer can make a difference in the lives of many. In the Gospel of John, Jesus prays that his followers, “will be one”. From the very earliest days of the church, the Acts of the Apostles recounts significant divisions. These first divisions were about resources and then the very nature of the church. We have never been one. This week is marked out as week to pray for Christian Unity. We received some wonderful news. Father Ed Mikolajczyk will be awarded the Pope John XXIII award given by the Asso-ciation of Chicago Priests On Sunday evening, February 23rd. This award is given annually to a priest of the Archdiocese who, in the opinion of his peers, truly exemplifies a life of pastoral service. I have known and worked with Father Ed for over thirty years and I can truly say this a well- deserved recognition. On Saturday, January 25th at 2:00 PM, I am co-hosting a conversation with our seminarians about their discernment of their vocation to the priesthood. This gathering is open to the high school age and older young men who might be interested. You can contact me for details. Finally, I want to say thank you to all who have supported Our Lady of the Woods financially these past few months. More of you have signed up for electronic giving. Our Sunday Collection totals have gone up since October and our Christmas collec-tion exceeded our budgeted amount. All of this makes a huge difference for our parish. On behalf of all who minister here at Our Lady of the Woods Parish, “Thank You”! In Christ,

Father Mike
