Flood RecapIn September 2013, Weld County was hit with devastating floods that ravaged our community and left many homeless. We saw the effects of the flood first hand as families who lost everything came to the food bank for help. In response, we saw a community come together to donate food, funds and volunteer hours so that those families would not go hungry.

That first day of the flood we got on the phone with every municipality in Weld County that was affected and asked them how we could help. We immediately started producing hot meals in our kitchen to take to emergency shelters. We took truckloads of water and prepared foods to survivors and emergency workers. In the City of Evans, the roads were washed out making it unable for our trucks to get in. A generous

community member donated the use of a golf cart that allowed us to go door to door with emergency food boxes for people in need.

Overall, we distributed more than 600,000 pounds of food in the form of hot meals, drinks, and emergency food packages. We worked with Greeley School District 6 who had over 700 homeless students as a result of the flood. Hot meals were prepared everyday in our kitchen to take to schools and Evans area shelters in the evenings so families who were displaced could have a hot, nutritious meal.

The week following the flood, we held a food drive at every grocery store in Weld County and collected over 57,000 pounds of food. In just that first week, 375 volunteers donated 1,500 hours of volunteer service. And, between September 13th until the end of that month, 5,000 volunteer hours were logged.

In Erie, Bible Baptist Church, one of our agency partners, lost their food pantry as a result of the flooding. Our Mobile Food Pantry worked closely with Bible Baptist’s Pastor Duncan to make sure food was available while they rebuilt. Through the grant secured from Wal-Mart’s Fight Hunger. Spark Change. campaign, we were able to buy the church pantry a new freezer and cooler to store more perishable meat, dairy and produce.

The impact of the flood is still felt by many in the community even after more than a year. As we reflect back on that time and the impact we made it becomes immediately apparent that it wouldn’t have been possible without the community support.

Weld Food Bank ProgramsKids CafeKids Cafe is an after-school program where we provide nutritional, prepared meals and snacks for undernourished children. We work with programs such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Weld County to identify hungry kids who might otherwise not get dinner. Our trained Chef prepares nutritious meals in our commercial kitchen and the hot meals can be transported to the children by our truck drivers. Last year we were able to serve 54,869 Kids Cafe meals to children.

Backpack ProgramThe Backpack Program provides food for children who are at risk for hunger over the weekend. Weld Food Bank works with school counselors and teachers to identify kids who are homeless or who are in great need throughout Weld County. Volunteers at Weld Food Bank fill the packs with child friendly food including shelf stable milk, juice, a high protein meal, and three or four snacks. We drop the packs at schools and the children take them home every Friday. This past year, with the help of our agency partners, we distributed 22,432 backpacks in Greeley, Evans, Windsor, Fort Lupton, Milliken, Hudson, Lochbuie, Keenesburg, Platteville, Gilcrest, Dacono, Frederick, Firestone, and LaSalle.

Summer FeedingWeld Food Bank also works to feed children over the summer months when they do not have access to free and reduced school breakfast and lunch. We do that through our Summer Feeding program where we work with communities throughout Weld County to identify areas where kids in need come together and we bring them a hot lunch. Lunches are prepared in our commercial kitchen and are kept hot and distributed with our trucks. Last fiscal year we were able to serve over 30,760 meals to kids throughout Greeley, Firestone, Dacono, Fort Lupton, Platteville, Gilcrest, LaSalle, Milliken, Eaton, Pierce and Kersey. That’s a 55% increase in the number of meals over the previous year!

School Food PantriesIn a recent survey, three out of five Colorado teachers said they have students who regularly come to school hungry. Our School Food Pantry program works to address this problem. We partner with schools throughout Weld County who have high numbers of hungry students and we provide them with food to start their own pantry. The food is available not only to provide breakfast if a child comes to school hungry, but also for hungry families to take when they pick a child up from school. This program is currently expanding and is now serving schools in Milliken, Fort Lupton, Frederick, Mead, Platteville and Gilcrest.

Emergency Food BoxesWe understand that many people are fighting hunger at home, so we provide needy residents of Weld County an Emergency Food Box. The EFB is a box of basic food staples meant to serve a family of four for three days. The box is available to any resident of Weld County who needs help during a difficult time. Once certified, families get a box of shelf stable food items and then pick and choose from the perishable foods we have available. Last year we distributed over 28,000 Emergency Food Boxes to hungry families in Weld County!

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)CSFP is a USDA Commodities Program for seniors over 60 years of age. The program is designed to serve some of the most vulnerable of our population and to ensure they get the basic nutrition necessary for good health. Recipients of CSFP must be certified by our staff and can receive CSFP food every month. Once seniors are certified they come straight to our warehouse, get the shelf stable commodities food items and then choose from the donated perishable items we have available. Last year we distributed over 38,000 CSFP food packages to people throughout Weld County.

Mobile Food PantryDespite the fact that Weld Food Bank provides food to over 101 hunger-relief member agencies, there remain areas of high need in the county. One way we address this need is through our Mobile Food Pantry. The pantry is a refrigerated beverage truck used to deliver fresh produce, dairy products, meat, bakery, and dry goods directly to hungry people. When the truck arrives at a site, volunteers help set up the food on tables so clients are able to choose the items they need. This past year, our Mobile Food Pantry distributed 1.4 million pounds of food to sites in Hudson, Dacono, Ft. Lupton, Frederick, Keenesburg, Lochbuie, Greeley, Milliken, Pierce and Windsor.

Non-Profit Agency PartnersOur goal at Weld Food Bank is to serve all of Weld County. But to do that we need to work closely with partners throughout those 4,000 square miles. Last year the food bank worked with 101 different Non-Profit Agencies, saving them nearly $1.94 million in food costs, and helping to end hunger in our county. Agencies get food directly from the food bank by placing large scale orders. They can either come to the food bank to pick up those orders or we can deliver food in one of our temperature controlled trucks. Our agency partners include food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, residential treatment centers, and senior and youth programs. They serve all ages and segments of our community. The food provided to those living with hunger often means the difference between feeding their families or going hungry, having hope or living in despair. Together these partnerships are fighting to end hunger in our community.
