DIRECTOR’S CORNER Gifts of Grandmotherhood
Many of you have come to know me at the Center and hopefully you would not describe me as emotional. I wanted to share a topic with you that truly touches the heart, and one that I think many of you can relate to in some way or other.
One never knows what lies ahead along the journey of life. On Dec. 14, 2015, we received a precious gift, Wesley Robert Pelczar, and on Aug. 30, 2017, another beautiful package arrived, somewhat early, but wonderful anyway - Abigail Bushnell. I am still stunned by the wonder and joy of it all; 2 grandkids - and wanted to share some of my feel-ings on this subject with you.
I have come to realize that regardless of our path to grandparenthood, biological or otherwise, many benefits are experienced. These include,
FUN FACTOR: It is the best excuse to be a kid again with these new arrivals after they have grown some. Take out the pots and pans and all of a sudden with pot spoons, you are drumming up some noise and laughing away, much to the headache of family members in the vicinity!
TRUE YOU: We have encased ourselves in adulthood allowing layers of life and its complexities to bury the deep joy within. Building blocks and singing together or playing peek-a-boo releases one’s happy core again.
INSTANT UPPER: When the day is down or miss-directed, simply pull out a photograph or two and relive the good times eating “mac and cheese” together!
FAMILY BRIDGE: You get closer to your children, as they see you in a new light! Not all your past conversations with them were controlling or ancient thinking! We listen and laugh today as we hear ‘she won’t be dating until she is 21!’ Haha! She is only 3 days old!
SPECIAL FRIENDSHIP: A special bond grows between you & your grandchild. You each smile from deep within, when you see each other, hold hands and walk and talk. The subject matter is unimportant. There is no
judgment, no fault finding, just happiness from being together.
Jean, Melissa &Abigail
Bob and Wes
Thanks for grandkids; for young ones that arrive and help us put life into perspective, dark moments into oblivion, and a balanced life into focus. Happy Fall!

5 Tips for Senior Driving Safety
Most people take driving for granted, but as they get older, driving can become more dangerous. Keeping older adult drivers on the road longer should be a goal, as long as they can drive safely. The following tips can help you to drive and enjoy life while staying safe, all at the same time. Get Your Vision Checked Have your vision checked yearly and go no more than two years without a checkup. Eye doctors can detect and correct many vision issues, such as cataracts, with fairly simple outpatient surgery. Take a Hearing Test As people age, their reaction times can slow down. This is partially due to failing vision and hearing. That is why both should be checked regularly. It’s best for seniors to have their hearing checked at least once every three years. Keeping the inside of the car as quiet as possible will also help reduce distractions. Know Your Medications As people age, they tend to take more medications typically for chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease. Many of these drugs or combinations can come with side effects. It is important to have a clear understanding of medications. Pay attention to Driving Conditions If you have trouble seeing after dark, then it is best to stick to daylight hours. It is also important to keep an eye on weather conditions. Inclement weather can make driving safely less than stellar. Have back-up plans such as having a family member drive or take public transportation. Take a Driving Refresher Course Taking a Driving Refresher Course can help boost your loved ones’ confidence behind the wheel. It can also give them an outlet to ask questions or raise concerns that they might have, and are hesitant to bring up. Driving safety for seniors is more than just about being able to drive. It is about the sense of mobility and independence that one gains from the ability to drive. When you can no longer drive, you feel a true sense of loss. It marks the beginning of a less independent phase of life. That’s why it is important to try to keep seniors driving safely for as long as possible. Source: griswoldhomecare.com
Other Questions to Consider: • Do you get lost on routes that should be familiar? • Have you received a ticket for a driving violation? • Have you experienced a near miss or crash? • Has your doctor advised you to stop driving/ • Do you stop inappropriately? • Do you suffer from Alzheimer’s or other illnesses? New director, Jean Patel Bushnell, who took over in April 2016, challenged the group to higher levels of creativity and community collaboration.
An opportunity presented itself some months ago, when knitters Maureen Freitas and Eileen Ciccarelli were at New England Pediatrics (NEPC) and discovered that kids needed a special type of blanket that would stay put to keep them warm. Matthew Boehm, Executive Director at Epic Health Services happened to overhear the conversation of the knitters with Laura Kirk, Recreation Specialist. An amazing collaboration resulted with funding from Epic Health Services for 50 “cozy covers,” a practical, fun and very patient-centric product designed by Eileen. Here they are being delivered.
