Date of release: 14 th September 2012 The Afternoon Sessions Saturday 29 th September 2012 Oporto, 2.30pm onwards Oxjam Leeds is proud to present The Afternoon Sessions, a punchy, exhilarating and delightful music gig that will enliven your Saturday ahead of an evening on the town. Or, if you prefer, consider it a cultural and entertaining way to spend a glorious afternoon, a perfect respite from the usual hustle and bustle. Whatever your inclination, with good music, food and drinks, and, of course, good company, there’s no other place to be. Confirmed artists include: Alaska Alaska are comprised of Nick John Henry on vocals, who has a penchant for singing about the darker side of the human psyche; Brendan Campbell on drums, who has the enviable party trick of doing an entire set with one hand; Dave Fisher on bass who moonlights as an inventor; and Matt Humphreys on guitar, renowned for being born in the Year of the Snake. The Leeds-based band describes their music as high-energy, B-movie-inspired psychedelic rock…with a surf-pop twist. They sing about egg-stealing reptiles, werewolf women, drowned cowboys and prodigiously gifted skateboarders. Needless to say, they’re unlike anything you’ve seen or heard in a long time. Opie Deino Delivering well-composed, guitar-led songs with poignant lyrics, Opie Deino is something of a gem we are completely enraptured with. Poetic, inspired and occasionally spiky, Opie Deino delivers an interesting and unique twist on the traditional singer-songwriter shtick Deino, incidentally, in Greek mythology was one of three monstrous sisters – the worst of the pack to be specific – while Opie, according to the singer is something she rather liked. Make from that what you will; what’s for sure is that this lady means business. Flocks Something of the expanse is evident in the music from Flocks, a mysterious musical force that emanates right here in our own backyard. The beautifully crafted songs, shredded down to their bare basics, are elevated to another level of brilliance thanks to the intimate vocals. Flocks deliver the kind of music that will transport you to lush and verdant forest from another world – and on a particularly evocative and misty day – where all you want to do is wander about, discover and explore. Powerful stuff. “The afternoon sessions at Oporto is an opportunity to host one of our amazing events at one of the most popular bars and streets in town. Call Lane is known for its atmosphere, its virbancy and, of course, its excellent nightlife. We’re looking to send peole off on their Saturday night, buzzing from an afternoon of music from some of the finest bands in Leeds.” Scott Lewis, Marketing Coordinator. Oxjam 2012 Leeds Takeover
