NW Cattle takes USA by the hornsMahikeng – The winner of the 2012 ABSA-ARC Nation-al Emerging Beef Farmer Award, Ms Matshidiso Molale-Mooketsi of Barui Farming Co-operative in Lykso, will on Sunday, 15 July 2014 jet off to the United States of America to attend the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF)’s illustrious 4-day Annual meeting and Research Symposium, in Nebraska. Ms Molale-Mooketsi, who is a beneficiary of the NW/IDC Nguni Cattle Development Project, won the ABSA-ARC National Emerging Beef Farmer of the year Award in 2012, and part of her prizes was a ticket to attend the BIF Annual meeting and Re-search Symposium. The meeting will discuss issues surrounding the genetic improvement of beef cattle and for attendees to learn about technologies and management practices that can aid in the profitability of their operations. Some of the topics to be covered include economic considerations for profitable cow herds, heifer intake and feed efficiency, heifer development strategies, selection for novel traits, genetics of disease susceptibility, genetically changing the nutrient profile of beef, nutritionally changing the fatty acid profile of beef, improving feed efficiency in the feedlot, and the relationship between selection for feed
efficiency and methane production. Ms Molale-Mooket-si who believes that an opportunity like this should not benefit her alone, promised to impart the information she will acquire at this symposium to other beef farmers in the Province. “I have the responsibility to selflessly contribute towards improved livestock production in the Province, and what a better way to do it than by em-powering my peers with information”, said the energetic Molale-Mooketsi, who will be accompanied by her hus-band to the USA. In wishing Ms Molale-Mooketsia safe and fruitful trip, the MEC for North West Department of Rural, Environmental and Agricultural Development Ms Manketsi Tlhape said the Department is confident that among the benefits Ms Molale-Mooketsi will gain from this symposium, is up-to-date knowledge on the man-agement of cattle welfare, which will help farmers to realise their quest for increased productivity and prof-itability. Ms Molale-Mooketsi is the second beef farmer from the North West Province to snatch this ARC/ABSA National Emerging Beef Farmer of the year Award, after it was in 2011 won by Mr Clifford Nkokou, a young stud breeder from Ganyesa who is also a beneficiary of the NW/IDC Nguni Cattle Development Project.
